Ship of Heroes plans April Kickstarter, alpha to run into next year

Are you watching the Ship of Heroes Kickstarter countdown? Have you set it to your main tab when you boot up your browser? Our eagle-eyed tipsters noticed the countdown timer early, but the Heroic Games team is ready to talk about it today.

April 4th is the Kickstarter launch day, says the team’s new press release.

“The crowdfunding effort will run for about a month, and will include a creative variety of in-game rewards and recognition. Heroic Games has not yet announced the intended dollar goal for the Kickstarter campaign, but all donations will go directly toward the continued rapid development of Ship of Heroes.”

After the Kickstarter, the Ship of Heroes studio will run multiple alpha tests this year and next, “then beta on a relatively quick schedule.” Kickstarter donors will also have first crack at those alpha slots.

“The Kickstarter proceeds will be used to accelerate work on Ship of Heroes during its second year of development,” says Heroic.

SoH is one of five City of Heroes-inspired superhero MMORPGs currently in production, though this is the only one that’s set on a starship.

I’m a bit concerned that they’re only going with 4 classes/archtypes at the beginning – which makes it like virtually everything else out there. I have zero interest in playing “WoW in tights”. The controller is what made CoH awesome for me, and I wont be going to any of the successor projects without that class.

I do not know about the other projects, but I know CoT has a Controller class for launch.

Did I cross a line? If so I apologize. It is easily googled info.

Maybe you guys can get an interview with Casey McGeever who is heading up Heroic Games?

Apparently from a cursory internet search he has been the CFO for ChainDrugstore.net, chief commercial officer for Accuweather Enterprise Solutions, (see http://enterprisesolutions.accuweather.com/)

And from this site, http://s4consulting.com/about/executive-leadership/

It paints a very good picture of him as a start up entrepreneur but its business jargony and that usually makes my eyes glaze over.

I don’t know if this is good or bad or if Mr McGeever doesn’t like the spolight, after all the abuse Mcquaid/Georgeson/Smedley get I can imagine them actually using an alias with the gamer public. “Entrepreneur Man will save your superhero mmo genre!”

He clearly has the CEO experience. My concern is over experience in this particular market. Claiming that he will be in Alpha before the year is up is especially concerning. That would make Ship of Heroes a record setter for from scratch MMORPG development, as they have only just hit one year of development. But, who knows, stranger things have happened.

If he’s got a team of full-timers focused on it, who knows? That alpha may be a little rougher than what you guys are going for. But heck, I don’t mind them going in to alpha. I’m more of a fan of taking the time to do it up right but if they think it’s right, let ’em show it off.

Oh, not complaining. More impressed.
