One Shots: All dolled up

It’s always a crapshoot with our weekly screenshot challenges; sometimes they take off, and other times… not so much. But boy howdy did you all seem to fixate on last week’s call to share pictures of MMO sights that creeped you the heck out. Now they’re creeping me out and I need sleep tonight!

Reader Vexia kicks us off this this nightmare fuel from Final Fantasy XIV: “I have 3,784 screenshots taken from FFXIV. Having played since open beta, I take an increased total amount of pictures each year. I searched through my 1,744 between now and February of 2016 to find the perfect shot of something that is creepy and, coincidentally, child-like. For some reason, the Sharlayans thought these were just the thing to guard their abandoned magical stuff. In true Square-Enix boss fashion, this is not even the final form. I spared you from having to look at that because it somehow gets even creepier.

Um… thank you?

“Space is…vast,” Rees Racer wrote. “Incomprehensibly so, really. No game I’ve played can properly represent the magnitude, but Elite Dangerous does the best job or portraying at least a galaxy-size portion. Sometimes in the middle of a long journey, it’s hard not to feel the wonder of it all, especially when a succession of systems have no place to dock, or even habitable planets. It can be unnerving, to be sure. Only the security of finally arriving at a nice large orbital station relieves the tension… sometimes.”

I kind of feel bad for Age of Conan players this week. It can’t feel good for the studio running your MMO to basically tell you that they’re all but abandoning the game, even if they aren’t shutting it down right now. So buck up, Conanites! Keep calm and screenshot on.

“I mean… if a pink sunset in AoC isn’t creepy I don’t know what is,” Dajhryne said.

True that.

“Here is a screenie that unnerved me… OK, creeped me out,” Rafael12104 wrote. “I’m man enough to admit that pixels have shaken me out of my slumber. Some humorous. And others, not so much. Let me introduce you to a Grimhorn, a resident in Blade and Soul. These little guys live in a wilderness of their own and are supposedly cannibals on occasion. Yeah… I can see it. Creepy little dudes size you up right when you enter.”

Let’s move away from the “creepy” motif, shall we? BalsBigBrother comes to the rescue with this one.

“As I mentioned the other day I have been spending time on my alts in LOTRO,” he posted. “The Last Homely House is one of those places that no matter how many alts I take through I can’t help but have my breath taken away by the beauty of the place. My Lore-master spent a good amount of time admiring the sights and enjoying the ambience of the place.”

We always joked that Rivendell was the most touristy locale in LOTRO because of how many pictures players took of it. So let’s use that as a jumping off point for this week’s screenshot challenge, which is to share pictures of those places in game that you can’t help take a million screenies of, even if you’ve been there and done that dozens of times over at this point!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

Places in game that you can’t help but take a screenie? Lol. Doesn’t narrow it down much for me.

But, I suppose since I’m playing BnS I do have a few spots there that seem more pick worthy. So, with that I give you a sample of scenes from the Zawei and its surrounding area.

The last cap doesn’t quite fit does it? But this raid boss looks so tame and loveable that I coudn’t help it. And to think that just a few minutes earlier this dude wiped a group of 24 in one shot.

Technical difficulties. Lol. I thought the former failed to post so I took a pick out and posted the latter.

Now I can’t delete either.

There are lots of beautiful places in Aion. I find almost everywhere screenshot-worthy. Pictured here are two from Iluma and one from Sanctum. From GW2, here’s the Itzel meditation cavern and a shot of the golden city of Tarir.

Wintersring in WoW is MMO space I have really fond memories of and lots of screenshots. It’s a perfect little snowy zone.

It’s not so much a particular place, although in Black Desert Online there is a spot atop a stone tower near the Cron Castle Site just north of Velia that provides a nice vista. I’m more interested in taking shots when there is a moon (or moons, depending on the game) present. It’s also easier to reach for low-level characters. I did roll the new Dark Knight class, and it’s…fine. Quite simply, I’ve not the time to grind (and what a grind it is) more than one (even though I have 8 total), and keep a couple more at reasonable levels.

My main is a Kunoichi, and here she is practising a few maneuvers beneath a full moon at the previously mentioned location.

I don’t take screenshots when I go, but I routinely make a pilgrimage to Bag End. It was my first famous location and I remember the warm feeling I had as I walked up the path and the lovely theme faded in.

Another reason I don’t take a ton of screenshots when I visit is because it’s hard to get any decent shots without the dreaded Lobelia Sackville-Baggins showing up in them.

There’s something about starry nights and when rendered well in a game can be awe inspiring. So this is where I can say LoTRO (even though that game is not my thing) and FF XIV have done spectacularly well in. And to a degree, Highmountain in WoW is finally starting to catch up there.

I always enjoy my stay in Sweetbreeze Cottage, brief as it usually is.

Poor Sorion. Alas, the show must go on.
