Conan Exiles previews 2017 plans, throws shade on early access abusers

Though it’s fun for the broader industry, GDC has been a bit of a dud for our genre for years now. If you’re willing to expand your horizons past pure MMORPGs, however, there’s plenty of juice. Exhibit A: Funcom’s Conan Exiles presence at the show. PC Gamer has a report out today on Funcom’s plans for the game, including the clothing and armor dye system (coming this month), mounts and taming, PvE purge events stuffed with iconic Conan NPCs, better thrall micro-management, a lush foresty biome (bring your warmer clothes!), trebuchets that hurl rocks and dead bodies, and a new sewer dungeon.

Funcom’s Joel Bylos even sneaked in a dig on unspecified games that launch early access and linger there indefinitely while charging for DLC. Conan, of course, has vowed to launch by this time next year and has promised to avoid paid DLC during early access.

Massively OP will be meeting with Funcom at this weekend’s PAX East, so stay tuned for more, and in the meantime, check out the videos below.

I’m glad they threw shade.. It’s a damn shame that these companies get away with hiding behind their forever alpha/beta.

Massively meeting FC at PAX East? Hmm. Mind asking if AO is going to get the stats exploit fixed? :p They won’t answer the playerbase when we ask. Maybe they’ll answer you guys. Maintenence mode still contains the word ‘maintenence’ in it, after all…

You know you’re hooked on a game when you wake up annoyed by a dream about building a new room onto your base in Conan Exiles that slowly morphed into building more rooms in Minecraft.

I’m glad to see news on more content and features for CE. I’m a survival game newbie, never thought I’d like them. Ark, Rust, H1Z1, never interested in trying those, but this CE has been tons of fun so far.

So no plans to actually implement an acceptable combat system?

The combat in this game is absolutely terrible.

It’s not fun or worth anyone’s time for pve or pvp.

Terrible hitboxes, spammy clickclickclick, bad movement etc.

Way too much focus on fluff when the core of the game is bad.

Yes I know “Early Access” but something at least worth improving and playing should be the priority.

They already talked about changing up the combat way back when they did the AMA post-launch.

post-launch.

???
Not sure if implying game has launched, or that combat will be fixed post-launch…

The more things this game adds for me to do, that dont involve just PvP, the better. Not that PvP is bad, but the main problem with survival games is so much of the game is built around players fighting each other. Its a cop out for the devs who end up not actually having to create content and things to do in their game.

I hate when Funcom does stuff like this because they aren’t the beacon of light in this area themselves. While I don’t really have hard feelings, they strung their AO/AoC communities subbing on promises of new content without really delivering that well for quite some time before they admitted recently that both games are pretty much content-finished.
