WildStar is giving away max level 50 toons for logging into its next patch

Happy Monday! Who wants free stuff? It's better than candy: It's a free max level toon in WildStar for its "Free 50 Frenzy" promo.

"Just log in after the Power of the Primal Matrix update is released and you’ll have a free character boost available at character creation for you to make a new level 50 character with. This is a one-time use offer, so be extra sure you’re creating the character you want to before finalizing it. Once your free level 50 boost is used, it’s used up forever—no takesy-backsies!"

There's already a paid character boost in this game, mind you, but this freebie one will come with a full set of DPS gear, a full set of one flavor of support gear, path rewards, a mount, a housing teleport, and a capital city port.

Primal Matrix launches on Wednesday; you'll have almost a week to log in and grab your freebie. And hey, while you're at it, why not swing by our Choose My Adventure column: We're currently in the midst if a WildStar playthrough.

I always take these free boosts when available if only to support the character I actually care about who is leveling.

I'm holding out until I get all rep, achievements, crafting and a professionally decorated house included for free. What, do they think I have time for this stuff?

I thought burnt hair smelled bad. This desperation makes that smell like fucking petunias.

Reader

That's a good offer. I'll probably log in to get it, but I want to level up the old fashioned way at least once. So I guess I'll make a level 50 character but focus on a lower one.

i dont know about new ppl that didnt play the game but this is a nice gift for us veterans who want another alt

Reader
Fair Mores

Absolutely. I cant decide what to roll, I have a medic, engineer, and warrior at level cap and a esper about halfway. So should I use this on a stalker or spellslinger...OR should I give into my vain side and just roll a Granok engineer for the looks!

Great!!!! I love when games do this.

So it's pretty much over, then?

When they start GIVING AWAY level-capped toons, that to me is pretty much a sign that a game's about to shutter because it simply doesn't matter anymore - not to the players, not to the devs.

From the link below:
In order to complete the matrix it will take you 270 days of not missing a single daily and that is only if you are subscribed, if you choose not to spend 15 dollars per month or pay gold in-game for a monthly sub via CREDD then it will take you 405 days of not missing a single daily.
“Okay, well I don't mind spending money for a game i like, how much money does it take to reduce the dailies needed by 1 day?”
Reducing the dailies required by 1 single day takes 375 service tokens, which costs $9.23 (tax not included).

And I thought the "What a long strange trip it's been" achievement in WoW made me hate festivals... this one would put me in a tower with a rifle.

SWTOR gives one away each expansion. WoW does the same. EQII has in the past.

I dont know about set of, but wow and eq2 have both given away NEAR level cap toons (ie the level the new content starts at), not completely at-cap characters. That's a big difference.

Reader
Drainage

Leveling is so fast, I see little difference.

Reader
Rottenrotny

This stinks of desperation. Also that long winded reddit post makes the update seem like a big mistake. Doesn't matter to me much though as I never could get past the cartoony visuals to play the game anyway.

Reader

Cool, I'll give it a whirl. I tried Wildstar and liked it, not enough to keep at it but maybe skipping the leveling game will change my mind on that. If not, it's not like it's costing me anything.

Do zones work like GW2 zones where your lvl automatically syncs to the appropriate lvl, would be nice to take this max character and take my time to do the storyline as well as the max level stuff?

Reader
Fair Mores

Unfortunately there is no level sync. You would be hitting as hard as a lvl 50 no matter where you go.
BUT the World Story quests (the main narrative of the game) is fascinating and worth experiencing. As a lvl 50 you would have access to it all without any interruption. Also quests are always clearly visible regardless of your level, unlike other mmos where once you out lvl a quest it turns grey or otherwise difficult to see.

Edit
Forgot to mention there will be lvl sync for dungeons, at least.

Ouch

https://www.reddit.com/r/WildStar/comments/5xjohb/primal_matrix_update_the_truth/

To the new players reading this, I advise you hold out and wait for a better mmo or for this one to fix itself.

To the veteran players reading this I advise you to re-watch Stephan Frost’s dev speak videos and remember a better time, remember why you invested so much time in a quirky, wacky, crazy game like wildstar all those years ago and realize that this update is not wildstar anymore.

Not sure about this. Whilst I've constantly failed to reach max level in Wildstar I don't see how skipping to the end will help me.

I have plenty of high level characters in MMOs, but I don't play them for various reasons and the big reason why I don't play Wildstar is because it's tedious. Leveling was a grind and the unforgiving group content sucked the fun out of that too if you were playing casually like I was. So jumping straight into a gear grind, doesn't seem like a positive thing to me.

Reader
A Dad Supreme

Leveling in WStar was always kind of boring so that's the good part... you get to skip it.
The bad part is I don't like free max characters because you don't really get to learn the skills, rotations, synergies and make the proper setups that you do as you normally level, so it's kind of a win/lose situation.
Since both cancel each other out, it's not much of an incentive for me to play again.

Reader
Wanda Clamshuckr

It is a generous offer, but I'll pass. I'm more about the journey, than rushing to "endgame".

Besides, I can't help but think back to other games that offered similar level boosts. There's nothing quite like grouping with someone for harder content that doesn't know their class skills because they skipped all the leveling process that would have taught them use and rotation.

spacejesus3k
Reader

Very few games (WS included) don't really teach you much about how your class is played at endgame by leveling.

Reader
A Dad Supreme

"Very few games (WS included) don't really teach you much about how your class is played at endgame by leveling."
===========
No game is supposed to teach you.. you're supposed to learn it on your own in an organic way... as you level.
Since you don't get to do that with a maxed toon, that means standing in front of a dummy learning rotations, skill synergies, buffs and best armor/weapon setups.
That always seemed to me like more of a job than fun whenever I did that with free maxed toons.

spacejesus3k
Reader

But leveling is a completely different animal from endgame (in most MMOs). What you learn while leveling is the most efficient way to play your class to level. So all you learn is how to level fast. In most cases using an endgame rotation is rarely the best way to level.

Reader
Fair Mores

I agree, especially if you are a tank. I have leveled up as a tank and what I learned was how to mitigate damage almost completely when fighting mobs. When I reached maxed level I had to relearn how to tank DUNGEONS. All my tricks went out the window (for example your shield is not suppose to be a second health bar but a damage buffer instead).

Same could be said about every other MMO. Familiarity and attachment is all that you gain from your character as you level up.

Wildstar is great, much better than WoW in my opinion and superior artstyle and music

Reader
Fair Mores

Though their style of music is different given that one is high fantasy and the other is sci-fi, I think because of WS tragic world story the music really touches home for me.

Reader
HNN

The art style is way over the top cartooney. I think WoW is a nice in the middle art style

well, i secure one of those and come back when the rush of new 50's is gone again.(Which hopefully resulted in a higher population)

I wish more MMORPG's did this. I mean, once you finish your "journey" through PvE story (or stories, if there are different ones for different factions) and all sidequests - leveling up another characters (if you want to try a different class or whatever reason you might have for doing so) just becomes a boring grind. Allowing people to instantly level another character to max (especially for free) lets them skip this annoyance and will also decrease the amount of leveling bots (which appear in every MMORPG with traditional leveling system).

Reader

Good news, since I hate leveling in Wildstar. Reminds me of vanilla WoW with all kinds of tedious crap. MO, pls remind us when wednesday comes

Seems like a bad idea.

...but I'm totes going to take advantage.

It's quite fast after the leveling update they did a while back.

Reader
Joshua Dickerson

Welp, that means im playing again at least to try out a new 50 :)

I still wish this game will take off again, hopefully this gives it the boost it needs. The F2P isnt really bad, they just need people to get in the game and stay.

Reader

Never was able to get myself invested enough in wildstar to make it to max level. I'm going to take advantage of this offer and try out the endgame. Thanks for the heads up.

Reader

I bet all the people complaining about this will login and grab this too. Anytime a mmo gives something away everyone jumps on it.

Seeing this doesn't make me think "What a great offer." Instead it makes me think "The pre-50 game must be so bad, the devs are allowing players to skip it altogether."

I actually really enjoyed the 1-50 game. When I hit the level cap, I got bored and stopped playing...

Reader
TheDonDude

The 1-50 game was great... once... maybe twice. After that it gets kinda agonizing.

Reader
deekay_plus

they improved endgame alot not long before and again with f2p launch. idk how much of the more raid/group dependent stuff is still being done tho.

Reader
Schmidt.Capela

The intent might be to fix that; get a number of nearly raid-ready characters to jumpstart the content.

As for whether the end-game content is enjoyable, it's a matter of preference as much as quality; personally I never liked raiding, and got so fed up with the whole concept I vowed to never again even try a raid, even one tuned to be faceroll-easy like WoW LFR raids.

Reader
Danny Smith

Huh. That seems desperate. Even for a game not doing well.

Reader
Oleg Chebeneev

WoW did it that and it was doing quite well. Many other MMOs do it too, like EQ and EQ2

Reader
RJB

Man they arew desperate , don't blame um tho

Reader
deekay_plus

iirc looking at the paid level 50 option when it was added it already includes that other stuff (but this freebie one will come with a full set of DPS gear, a full set of one flavor of support gear, path rewards, a mount, a housing teleport, and a capital city port.).

i mean it costs literally over $100usd normally so i would hope it comes with this stuff which is really baseline for level 50. tho i think the paid one also comes with some starting gold? can't recall that for sure.

anyways it's almost tempting but i'd need to reinstall the game due to recent windows reinstall and i wouldn't be able ot fit it on my hdd and i've got GRW coming up tomorrow so... ehhhhh

Ugh. Respect level for Carbine lowered.

Its crazy to see the exact same mistakes being made over and over again. Free max level when the entire point of mmorpgs is supposed to be the adventure / journey. These are not mmorpgs anymore, they are a whole nother genre.

Reader
RJB

Problem is Wildstars Adventure, journey is boring af that's why ppl can't get to max lvl

Reader
deekay_plus

it's alot of fun with a friend even with one friend mentoring. but solo it's definitely very boring imo.

but i feel this way about any quest driven mmo's leveling content since before rift to some degree or another. so hardly limited to wildstar. if anything ws is a bit better than average for it's sub genre.

Reader
Witches

When a new expansion or content patch launches you will not find many people to do lower level stuff with, WS is relatively recent but how do you expect people to catch up in a game with 10 or more years of content? Or do you really expect people to take years to get to the most recent content?

Reader
deekay_plus

mostly it's for people that have already played the leveling content and don't want to level an alt but want an alt at endgame.

it would make more sense to make mentoring legitimately rewarding especially when it comes to getting newbies up to level cap, but they've been visibly deaf to that feedback when i've given it in the past so w/e.
