Elder Scrolls Online opens preorders for the official Morrowind guide book

Remember before the internet, when printed guide books were actually a thing and we would drop ridiculous sums of money on these tomes to help us get through our favorite video games? Well who knew: They’re still out there and even being made for MMORPGs.

Bethesda has started taking pre-orders for the official Prima guide to Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind, which will certainly not be rendered obsolete by the day one patch. The guide will ship when the expansion goes live and will contain “leveling, crafting, and combat information gets players fully up to speed with this sprawling new expansion.”

In addition to getting the physical printed book, which you can immediately donate to museums to show future generations what printed guide books looked like, purchasers will also get an online “eGuide” that can be accessed via browser. The guide costs $25 to preorder or $40 if you want to go with the collector’s edition. Hey, you just might want to snag that last one, because this could well be the final Prima guide ever made!

I don’t really want any kind of “guide” which will be out of date in a few months anyways… but if they released a lore book, the way Pillars of Eternity did… that I’d probably buy. Sitting down and reading stories is fun. Sitting down and reading stuff you can just look up online, not as much.

They will never have another hype wave like this going on so I guess they are milking it for all it’s worth.

Prima guides are a waste of money.

In a generation, our grandchildren will ask us, “Why did people bother printing all those PDFs?”

More evidence of how a sketchy MMO at release turned into one of the top MMO’s in the world. Who could blame a company for really silly almost shameless money grabs (a guide to an mmo expansion? LOL) when its players throw money at whatever they put out. In future articles when people are complaining about monetization in games, send them here, LOL.

Haha, OK funny enough, i wanted to think about it, and i’m sure of this now, but the last guide i ever bought was for…drum roll please; you guessed it… MORROWIND!
And printed guides have been pretty much useless since then.

Maybe it’s more for the novelty factor?

I’ve found the printed guides to Skyrim, Fallout 4 and Witcher 3 pretty absorbing as well as useful. I also have printed guides to various MMOs including WoW, SWTOR, and GW2.

What I do hate are any guides accessed on a computer whether through a browser or a saved doc file, in fact I hate any on-screen document that runs to more than a page or two. I much prefer to sit in a comfortable armchair and read a proper printed guide.

I guess I’ll probably end up getting the Morrowind guide if I see it around, not sure I’ll pre-order it tho’.

Nothing beats print tbh. I still read books, and once in awhile a magazine or two.
You gotta disconnect, unplug sometimes.

I loved reading about Morrowind when i couldn’t play Morrowind, what an awesome summer. Reminiscing about that time; a mind blowing massive game world, and the equally massive guide to read while you couldn’t play to go along with it. Almost tempted to get this one, but this isn’t a static single player game, it’s an mmo, i’m sure the guide will hold up for awhile but…

They are also selling this in the store.

Which should come free with the purchase of the Prima guide.

Buying a guide for an MMO is literally throwing away money, heck depending on patches it might even be irrelevant before it hits your door step. Despite this as I look over at my bookshelf I have a plethora of them…. heck I still read my DAOC guide sometimes just to remember how awesome it was….

A much more effective way of grabbing my money would be to release a printed book of concept art from the expansion’s development.
