PAX East 2017: TERA is coming to Xbox One and PS4 this year

Remember those rumors last year about a console port for TERA, buffeted by the surveys to selected TERA players about which consoles they play on the most? Time to drop the “rumor” flag, as En Masse confirmed at PAX today that the Korean-born import is indeed destined for both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 later this year. It’ll be free-to-play and include “the entirety” of the PC game’s content.

TERA’s real-time and skill-based gameplay is the perfect fit for home consoles. While the game already supports a gamepad on PC, the console version’s control scheme is being redesigned and rebuilt from the ground up to ensure a responsive and visceral combat experience. The game’s user interface is also being completely rebuilt for consoles with the controller and living room viewing distances in mind.”

You can already sign up for the beta if you’re interested! In the meantime, we’ve tucked new screenshots and the announcement trailer below.

So will it be cross-platform or silo’d? I would prefer to not starting over.

Sure, the mechanics are ‘skill-based’, but the gear grind/treadmill and rng aspects of the game make sure that success ultimately has little to do with skill. Such a shame too…the combat mechanics are so good.

True and to specify the enchants can go up to +15 depending on gear and if you fail at least it won’t break or go back down

I enjoy Tera but not enough to play it over other games on my pc. When it comes to ps4 though that would be another matter. Hopefully it will truly be f2p and not require PSplus, need more games on my ps4

Good move for Tera. Now if Carbine would only port Wildstar over….

Consoles are just a solid fit for this kind of game.

Wildstar is basically a Ratchet and Clank/Jak and Daxter MMO

I am actually beginning to wonder if that isn’t the plan would explain why ncsoft keeps it alive

Cool, it does make sense for them to do so.

I am hoping they bring the new ui to PC as well as make is cross platform..or at least let me import

That said I am now wondering if Wildstar is being kept alive to be NC softs first console mmo it has all the groundwork needed and the action combat would work well on console..do would gw2 tbh

Did they do anything to improve performance on PC? I remember having to play with modded UI simply to improve frame rates. =P I don’t trust them at all to make it run acceptably on console.

PC requires generic optimization because it needs to work across a broad range of PC hardware and OS while console is much easier to optimized.

Yes they did some small improvements. I said small because its only a few frames. KR just released another performance patch but I doubt it will make too much of a difference

Did TERA’s quests ever evolve beyond “kill ten rats”?

Last time I played it, nearly every quest in the game that I saw was “kill ten x”. Not even a halfway compelling narrative. Just “i need you to kill ten monsters..because reasons.”

They gave another way of leveling now instead of doing dungeons, BAMs or quests. Basically the same as quests but they’re call vanguard quests which starts at level 11. It’s a variety of random tasks and can mix things up a bit.

They made leveling fast in this game though, you can hit 60 within a few casual days, 65 in a few more days.

My biggest problem with it is how crappy it ran and imo it had too many buttons for a Action MMO(I played a Ranger or w/e) even with the chaining system.

Nope, not really.

Not that I saw.

Best things about Tera? Action combat is fun, BAM’s are fun. Slinky outfits are fun.
Worst things about Tera? Questing is crap. Too many Elin cyborz.

Nice! I’ll try this out on XB1.

Neat, i’ll be giving it a try on PS4.

I assume the servers will be segregated and platform specific? If that is the case while understanding why that would be it will still be disappointing to me as a gamer /sigh

Xbox has repeatedly said they are ready to do crossover platform multiplayer; Sony is holding up their end of the bargain. Xbox can already do x-platform with PC (cuz Win 10 obvs), but they’re ready to pull the trigger. Hopefully Sony will stop being bastards one day and agree to it.

Whats sony’s stance on this game? They don’t seem to have any issue with x-platform play with FFXIV

I think Sony is fine with as long as its not cross platform with Xbox. So cross platform between PS4 and PC they’re okay with. It has to do with marketing and competition between consoles. Part of the decision making process when it comes to what console to buy has to do with what your friends have so you can play together. If they did cross platform with Xbox than the part of the equation is partially removed, and they must not be okay with that happening where Xbox is.

actually the hang up now is that MS wont give up the XBL fee. SE wont launch on a platform that requires an additional layer of service fee to play their game. its been that way since FF11. Microsoft wont waive the XBL requirement to let players play XIV on their system.

Reader
Sorrior Draconus

Ehhh as for ffxiv been outright said it is XBOX requirement that they get a private server option with multi console stuff SE doesn’t want that

Have they said that post-change of heart from Phil Spencer?

Pretty cool new, congrats En Masse. I’ll probably be passing on this one though. I’ve played so much on PC (with three endgame characters) that switching to console doesn’t seem worth my time, especially since pc supports gamepad controls. If it was progression based instead of at the Current PC content I’d probably would give a shot, just to be able to play the game again like it was before their cash shop got so out of hand.
