The Daily Grind: What MMO news are you hoping for from PAX East?

It’s that time of year again when I go shipping up to Boston, because I live the closest and thus must continue to cover PAX East each year. It’s a bit like perpetually shoving a boulder up a hill. Sisyphean analogies aside, though, I go not because I enjoy Boston, but because there’s always some interesting news to be heard about MMOs, and we want to get all of that for you to chew on.

No doubt you have some idea of who’s going to be there, games as varied as Final Fantasy XIV, Trove, and The Elder Scrolls Online. We’ve got interviews and appointments lined up, there are panels to be seen, there is hype to be built. So what are you excited about, dear readers? What MMO news are you hoping for from PAX East? Or do you just want to watch along from the sidelines and hope it’s something cool?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

GW2 expansion with a Necromancer Elite Spec that provides a Raid buff that the Meta can’t do with out so that 3 or 4 classes don’t have a monopoly on end game ( but then this is ANet so).

A new buy to play PVE only science fiction mmo. A cross between Anarchy Online And Earth & Beyond. With Graphics and Gameplay like Wow or GW2 so everyone could play it. Not just people with the latest PC gear. No monthly fee and a cash shop like GW2. Land and space based gameplay. planets with cities and mission along with space based missions. A seamless Universe the size of Eve Online. Character creation with many different types of life forms. Classless based. You decide what you want to do. A studies system like Alganon’s. that works even when offline.

A few new sandbox MMOs that don’t force pvp on you. Come on guys, not everyone wants that in a game.

Really though, while I can list an endless number of announcements I hope for, I’d much prefer something that has never occurred to me. A good example recently, the Sleeping Dogs movie announcement. Honestly, never thought of the game being made into a movie, especially since the studio closed down, but the second I saw that a movie was being made (I love the shit outta the game) AND that it was going to star DONNIE MOTHERFUCKING YEN? I lost my shit. Went completely nuts with excitement because that’s a thing that I’d never realized that I had a deep need for. I NEED THIS MOVIE IN MY LIFE AND I NEVER KNEW ABOUT IT.

Exciting news, but I also think they could have gotten someone younger.

Also, in confirming this, I also came across this piece of scary news: “DJ2 is currently co-producing the upcoming live-action/CG feature Sonic the Hedgehog for Sony.”

Yeah, if they picked the guy who did the main character’s voice (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0498449/?ref_=tt_cl_t1) I’d be super down with that as well, he did a great job and is a solid actor. But I just love me some DONNIE MOTHER FUCKING YEN way too much (I exclusively refer to him in that manner).

And damn you for reminding me that there is going to be a Sanic movie. I’ve been doing my best to forget that fact for the rest of my life -_-

An announcement that real MMO’s will be releasing. Social, group oriented MMO’s. Will never happen, which is why I don’t go but I can dream.

A PvE focused sandbox with role filling throughout an entire kingdom/ecosystem where players must fill roles and work as a society in order to fight back and eventually push into the territory where the legions of monstrous hordes reside. Complete with invasions, tiered mastery crafting with specializations not only in what one crafts but within subfields creating massive variety and igniting trade, roleplay mechanics heavily supported, RP naming rules 100% enforced, subscription based or buy to play with a minimal cash shop, and some interesting socio-economic systems involving NPCs and trade.

What, you asked what I am hoping for, not what I am expecting!

Nothing in particular. More so because I don’t pay attention to the big conventions per see, and find it quite disturbing when devs make important information available exclusively through one such venue.

More info on the Morrowind expansion. That’s pretty much it. Anything else I’m interested in I get plenty of info about without paying attention to Pax.

Something, anything about RDM from the XIV team. So far we have a vague comment about ‘chainspell’ as their gimmick but we still don’t know what spells they use. Will it be a straight XI style ‘little of column A, little of cilumb B’? that seems a bit dull.
I still think things like en-fire and en-water will be more their deal but right now we have no idea.

Maybe James Donovan Halliday will unveil his idea for a virtual environment, the next step in VR with a full hapsuit, call it something like Sanctuary…or Oasis.

Who knows.

Hopefully some new tidbits on Stormblood from the Q&A tomorrow with Yoshi-P.

I’d really like to hear the specifics on the Eternal Bonding update that was briefly alluded to during the Korean live letter, but I doubt that will happen.

I haven’t looked at the sponsor list to know. I only really care about New World or Sea of Thieves news on the MMO landscape. I doubt Rare or Amazon or involved in PAX.

Everything else I like is on cruise control or a game I don’t care about.

Hopefully we will get news on 7 or more “brand new” Korean MMO’s releasing this year that are nearly identical to the 26 already out.
Or, my personal favorite, a new isometric mmo in development!

Sarcasm aside, about the only thing that could get me excited is some sort of news about a new EQ mmo, but that is a pipe dream.

I don’t look for much news from the PAXes. Plenty of news comes from them, but I still think of it as just a cool public event. Let PAX be about community and E3/publisher events be about the news cycle. ☺️️

Reader
Armsbend

That changed years ago. PAX is just E3 10 years ago now. Without needing “press” credentials.

Reader

My experience with the show has not changed significantly.

To a degree I think you’re right. But even at PAX, having a press badge means you don’t stand in lines except for panels, as long as we get appointments (and even sometimes when we don’t). The logistics means I can send one person to see ten times what a regular person can see in the same amount of time, which isn’t really better than E3 overall, you know?

Still, the best view for a lot of games is from home via Twitch streaming, which I’m sure PA isn’t thrilled about. Or is, as long as y’all still buy swag. Hehe.

Reader
agemyth 😩

If all one is interested in is livestreams of panels or bullet pointed lists of what the marketing people want their target market to post at the top of a game’s dedicated NeoGaf thread, being at home F5ing webpages is the place to be.

The best parts of PAX are not the parts that people at home are looking to read about.

For the press, I know things are different. Sending one person for hands-on and potential interviews is often enough for smaller outlets. The rest of you can track down most of the #content on the web.

As with most times this question has come up the only reason I even notice that conventions are a thing is from the stories MassivelyOP post. They are all so divorced from me and my life that I wouldn’t be aware of them otherwise.

So I would guess to answer your specific question I never expect anything from them.

Reader
wratts

Yeah, every year when the expo stories start coming out I think “dang, I’d really like to take the kids to the local one, when do tickets go on sale?” Followed by finding out they’re sold out, signing up on mailing lists for next year (that never seem to get processed), and the cycle continues

i went to a convention 2 years ago and it was something i don’t care to repeat. stuffed covention floor with alot of the floor space dedicated to selling funko pops for w/e reason.

i did get to watch a professional artist draw some pokemon drawings and got to see malcolm mcdowel with my own two eyes tho i was too shy to go up and talk to him despite lack of line up to do so. >>
