Ship of Heroes salutes City of Heroes in its network demo video

Ship of Heroes has a new video out today that is ostensibly a network demo showing off half a dozen remote developers spread across the country testing out 16 characters in the game. But what it's really signaling is a tribute to City of Heroes, the long-sunsetted inspiration MMO, as one by one the characters raise torches plainly in symbolic honor of those who protested in Atlas Park 33 back in 2012.

"We remember," reads the video caption.

"Each [dev] individually activated a power called 'Torch' which we coded for this test," says Heroic Games. "No server, login, connection or client problems occurred during the test. As far as we know, no other pre-Kickstarter MMORPG has published a network test of this kind before."

Yesterday, the studio announced details for its Kickstarter: It'll seek $400,000 during its April crowdfunding campaign. As we've previously noted, Ship of Heroes is one of five (depending on how you count them and which ones you think are legit) City of Heroes-inspired MMOs currently in production.

While I appreciate the attempt to do a successor, the concept of flying around on this spaceship is just a little weird for my taste. I loved the late 70s/early 80s feel of CoH, and hope at least one of the successors can replicate it.

I'm sorry, but that joke just didn't catch fire.

None of these super hero mmo games seem like they are going to feel like professionally made games. Although, this one comes closest to far from what I have seen.

It really is too early to know. Actual professionally made games don't look professional until very near the end.

Not entirely true. It really depends on the game, and more importantly the team of people working on the game.

For example... take a look at Ashes of Creation. Game is still in pre-alpha stages, and already looks like its being made by professional modelers, animators, artists, UE4 coders and designers.

Its not to say that these Super Hero games wont end up feeling professional, but im my experience, most mmo's that stay in this "prototype" mode for long times, end up either being vaporware, or end up being released and feeling like an unfinished and amateur production.

Ok dude, Ashes of Creation looks awesome. Thanks for the tip.

While my experience points to the opposite. I suppose we can agree to disagree. (and I'll check out Ashes of Creation, looks interesting)

Not going to lie...it's getting to the point where I'm about to start completely ignoring news about the 743 CoH "spiritual successor" projects going on. Trying to keep them all straight on which project is what is too damn confusing -___-

I'm actually surprised there are so many, but only because plenty of other sub-genres of MMOs (sci fi, high fantasy) have shuttered over the years, and we haven't gotten even one spiritual successor out of any of them.

It seems there were higher levels of gumption, determination, and advanced technical knowledge amongst the City of Heroes player base than the MMORPG player base at large.

We're stubborn. Remember, we were a playerbase which had a badge which required killing 10,000 of these stupid monkey-like things, that granted you nothing other than you had the badge.

I proudly sported that Zookeeper badge for years!

Hell yeah! I did that damn monkey badge before it was nerfed.

Yep, they are their worst enemy. Trying to make an indie game, for a small niche market of players. On top of which, they have what 4 other teams also making pretty much the same game, while up against DCUO & Camp online for the superhero MMO crowd.

They diluted the really small pool of possible interest to far. So much so that none of them is going to really end up gaining any traction.

I feel the same way about all the mmos popping up. I know everyone has their own grand vision of what an awesome mmo should be like but a lot of games today are the same shit with different graphic representations and different game engines.

And its even worse when it comes to non mmo games... Just looking at the games on ps4 play store it's like obviously they're finished games but there is better games on the Google store compared to the trash that's on Ps store...

This one has a Kickstarter coming in 20 days, so they are going to be ramping up their marketing machine in anticipation of it. I know City of Titans has shifted around our own schedule to try and not derail their efforts.
