EverQuest turns 18 years old, throws birthday bash with free heroic characters for everyone

One of the most famous and longest-lived MMORPGs is celebrating its 18th birthday today. Back on this date in 1999, EverQuest released to a much different gaming world than what we have today. Since then, it has released 23 expansions, switched to a free-to-play business model, and endured when many of its contemporaries have sunsetted.

Daybreak is cranking up the anniversary festivities with loads of activities, starting with the completion of two player-designed missions that were drafted up back at SOE Live in 2014. There are new rewards and marketplace items, as well as the return of all of the anniversary content from previous years. Gotta get your gnome race on!

Even better, the studio is handing out free heroic toons. “All players who have ever played the game will be granted a heroic character if they log in between March 16th and March 31st,” Daybreak says.

Bonus experience will be running on all of the servers for the remainder of the month, with the rest of the anniversary activities extending to May 10th.

Massively OP’s MJ will be streaming the game this evening, so point your eyeballs at OPTV at 9 p.m. EDT tonight!

Just re-subbed a short while ago for the first time in 10 years. Takes a while to adjust to the graphics and I got around the learning curve by playing on the Phinigel server, which only has a few expansions active so far. Plenty of groups at all levels, especially past 20 or so.

It will obviously never be the game that it was but it still offers something unique. Its nice to be able to group again and actually properly chat to the group. In most other MMO dungeon runs all I tend to say is “Umm…….where did everyone go?” as a bunch of jaded gogogo’s charge headlong off to faceroll the next herd of cattle.

Heh. Here is something I haven’t said… ever, maybe. Thanks Daybreak! Sure, I’ll take a free heroic character!

Heh, that’s cool. Now, if only I knew where that hard-drive was from 17 years ago, or where the password may have gone, or even what account registration I might have had…

Well, maybe I’m just misreading the requirement there, and they would even hand them out to new players, but the simple fact is that I read that as ‘returning players’ and not new accounts, and I certainly did not retain records for games that far back! Cool on them though, still.

Watching EQ and EQ2 turn 18 and 13 years old and with what happened to EQNext is like watching a couple that planned to retire and ‘take it easy’ soon but now has to work ten more years to pay for the rest of the extended family’s bills instead.

Probably the best message I’m going to read on any game forum probably for a long time. Put a bloody tear in my eye. Not even joking. You, sir, win the internets for today.

I always think fondly of my Wizard back in the day. I tried to go back a couple of summers ago, but the sheer datedness of it all did me in. I’m glad some people are still enjoying it, and EQ2.

Strong urge to play this game right now. I just know I won’t stick with it due to old graphics… but it’s #1 all time. WoW wouldn’t exist without it.
edit: might be worth it just to experience Orc Hill and Crushbone again.

Congrats, EQ1! No go get laid and then have a cigarette afterwards, you’re finally old enough (in the US).

The scary thing is, EQ already has teenage kids. Talk about starting young!

I remember this like it was yesterday, my company had just transferred me to VT, I had to drive nearly two hours one way to Burlington to grab a copy. I remember pouring over the Manual on the ride back, I also remember not being able to log in until three days later due to the servers being jammed. But once I logged in I was hooked.

Ah the old gorean slave girl pose painting.

Still though, love those lush Keith Parkinson tableauxs

Happy Birthday EQ!

I still remember my first character who didn’t know how to equip a torch and fell into the canal in hobbit town and was killed by something unknown which I eventually realized wa a carnivorous fish.
