Conan Exiles contemplates official server wipes following massive duping exploit

Funcom says it's "weighing its options" following a series of rampant duping and apparent character hacking exploits in Conan Exiles.

Players on Reddit have begun recording the exploits and demanding full wipes of the early access survival sandbox.

"Just killed a player who had several True Names on him, then used one to wipe a vault that was full of them + another vault with thousands - literally thousands - of T3 materials and building pieces," writes one player. "As gamebreaking events go, this is pretty much as bad as it gets short of all character data becoming irrevocably corrupted. If you're not going to wipe after 2-3 days of rampant duping (which has apparently been going on since launch, in some cases) then what DO you wipe for? These servers are completely destroyed now. You're going to lose more people by refusing to wipe than you will by ripping the band-aid off. Please do the right thing, Funcom."

Funcom has responded to the community by saying it's still working out what to do:

It's early access. Wipes happen. That's part of the gig.

*awaits his next wipe*

Funcom has wiped servers a few times now just from regular patching don't get what the holdup is. Its all Early Access regular wipes are part of the process. my private server has had 3 wipes so far.

It's not even what I would call a duping exploit. From my experience so far in hunting down and helping ban exploiters, it looks like these folks have a way to access at least some of the admin commands. Ghosting, flying, spawning items directly, they're doing it all. That's not an exploit, it's straight up using hacks.

The sooner people realise that "early access" is a pseudonym for "paid-for beta" the better.

Geezus all the Funcom haters... I remember zen$max had these same problems with dupping after launch of E$O and did shit. Course it wasn't going to effect the console launch because they were going to get a fresh server... But that's right Zen$max went with the cash grab at E$O console launch and for $20.00 bucks you yourself could help trash the fresh servers with pc transfers....

So trashing funcom with such an earlier pre release problem is kinda shitty....

To be fair I don't think I know of a single Funcom title that wasn't atrocious at launch. And I don't mean "bad" or "not good" I mean actually atrocious. When Anarchy Online launched, for example, 50% of the game didn't work in addition to their credit card system not being done securely.

That's not to say ZOS is any better but most people pretty much knew going into that that the PC launch was basically the pay to beta the game for consoles. But another company being terrible doesn't somehow make the first any less atrocious.

I guess that's because you didn't play any of their titles for any extended period of time? I was on Launchday in TSW and except for a few quest-hiccups, it ran wonderful. I was in AoC just a few months after launch and it was a pleasant experience.

FFXIV and SWTOR weren't any better at launch.

What the hell were you playing on launch day of TSW? It was almost outright broken on launch day. And actually outright broken if you tried to progress through the content.

AOC I don't recall being too awful at launch. Definitely had issues, but it worked mostly.

AoC was a fucking disaster at launch ;)

Ah yes, another game showing "Early Access" for the scam it really is by not wiping when appropriate.

It's early-access. "Nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure".

An awesome line from a great movie and I say the only way to deal cheats and hacks. Lol.

Funcom dev in response to complaints about wiping the servers:

"Maybe you haven't been keeping up with current events, but we just got our ass kicked!"

Hey Funcom: Prove that your early access is in fact for testing/polishing purposes and not just a money grab. Wipe the damn servers.

What if they are looking to put out at an update that will need a server wipe. They probably don't wont to wipe then wipe again in a month. Also wiping before being fully sure they fixed the problem would just be plain stupid.

Not saying they shouldn't wipe just saying their maybe reasons why they don't want to wipe right now.

Ding! We have a winner!

Funcom, don't even stress about it. Do it and remind everyone what early access is supposed to be. The game hasn't launched.

Reader
agemyth 😩

Always wipe up after accidents. Even if its just a little shart.

Most things are expendable in survival games. Don't bother getting attached to things until a developer gives their "no more wipes" blessing. Then if they have to wipe again later, riot I guess.

Wait. This is exactly what early access is for. To find these type of issues and take care of them. Are people forgetting they are in early access?

Wipes are perfectly fine at this stage. In fact, I would argue that they should be expected.

A massive duping exploit you say. In a Funcom game you say. My, never would have expected that to come up, regularly like clockwork... I guess if they have ex-AO staff working on CE that'll be why those holes are still poppping up.

At least this is technically not a full release so character wipes are somewhat less frowned upon. (Still a painful loss for a lot of folks though.)

No surprises here. Sounds as well just like ark where much of these things are a non issue on unofficial servers.

This game is in alpha. No harm in wiping.

Yep, that's what EA is for. Though, this is pretty typical for FC unfortunately

Reader

Actually, it's pretty typical of all online games. They all have their cheaters, hackers, and exploiters - regardless of whether Funcom is running them. Bit of a cheap shot at Funcom in my view.

You know what the problem is with online games? Its always the people that play them.

Reader
wratts

Maybe, but I've been through the AOC launch, and the stories about the Anarchy Online launch are still epic. There's a reason they've had to work hard to shake the Failcom nickname

Reader
Tandor

Not so much to do with cheating, hacking, or exploiting tho'. The "Failcom" tag came about as a result of the performance/server issues they had in those games.
