DDO and LOTRO suffer sub woes, LOTRO Issue 20 arrives this week

How would you feel if you paid money to subscribe to an MMO, and the company took the money without delivering that sub? Probably pretty disgruntled, which is exactly the mood among some DDO and LOTRO players this month as they struggle with attempting to secure a VIP membership to Standing Stone's titles.

On both the DDO and LOTRO forums, players have been complaining since early March that the studio took their money but haven't activated their membership. It seems that PayPal is a possible issue in this transaction, so you might want to avoid that payment method for the time being. For the studio's part, SSG said on the 12th that it would be looking into the issue.

There is some good news, however. LOTRO Issue 20, with the new Wastes zone, looks to be coming this week. Let's hope the Standing Stone Games tech team can sort out the lag that's been caused by the squash of players in the end game areas when it arrives.

This is clearly a paypal issue. Paypal has been shady for years. One year they placed a hold on my account for making too many payments to CCP for eve online. I haven't used their service since.

Are they still using that old Turbine Account site which looked like it was from the 90s?

I haven't logged in since the change over. I should check to see if my LOTRO lifetime has been honored and my points carried over.

This handily ignored the fact that the ticket system at SSG's website didn't work for some, and the fact that their support number they have listed is actually a WB Games number, and has nothing to do with SSG at all. They have ignored most tickets entirely that have gotten submitted, Cordovan has ignored my directly PMing him, and are ignoring disputes via Pay Pal as well.

That comment from the 12th is just PR doublespeak; they are no more "looking into it" than Elton John is a straight bassist for a death metal band. Many people have been waiting for a few weeks with nothing more than closed tickets and canned responses as a result. They ignore the few tickets that their buggy site allows to go through, they ignore PMs on the forums and forum threads other than a canned response, and they ignore messages via PayPal. How difficult is it to look at a receipt? Not very hard. There is absolutely no reason they cannot look at their own Pay Pal account and see the same transfers we are seeing.

The fact is, SSG has managed to outdo even Turbine's horrid reputation for bad service. Their motto is ignore it and maybe it will go away. This goes well beyond just the stolen money. After all, they have the money, why should they care? Pay Pal shows them as having the money; I even screenshotted the Pay Pal receipt. It's not a Pay Pal issue, it is a Standing Stone Games issue, one they refuse to deal with.

I bought 1600 LP with PayPal. The $19.95 left my account, but SSG says only that they are working on the problem. Meanwhile, I'm out $20 and have no LP to show for it.

I'm giving them another 24 hours then initiating a chargeback through PayPal. It's inconceivable that a game monetized by selling in game currency will take money and not send the currency. I emailed them all the details from PayPal. How hard can it be to say "okay, here's 1600 LP?"

Old games need to do upgrades to keep their subs up. Its not just about adding new content.

Graphical upgrades, UI upgrades, mechanics upgrades, etc etc. Low res textures, square beards, very low view distances, lots of object pop-in despite being able to run 5 instances of the game at once on todays hardware. All of these things left unaddressed will cause people to eventually leave for newer, better horizons.

The reason WoW has managed to continue to still do well is that they continue to do these things despite being a game thats over 10 years old. They have continue to up the quality of the graphics from texture resolutions to polygon counts, upping view distance, improving rendering effects like water FX, lighting, shadows, etc. They have modified the UI and interface, added improvements and streamlining it (and allowing addons to pick up any slack). All of these things allow the game to not age so poorly, compared to games like LoTRo and DDO.

Jumping back into DDO is great for those "I remember the time i spent here!" moments but its very hard to really immerse oneself back into a game that is so visually dated and suffers from some pretty awkward and un-intuitive UI design/mechanics.

Imho Blizzard has the money to do the sort of graphical updates it does. A company as small as SSG, tho not necessarily impossible, would have a much harder time adding graphical upgrades. I daresay they probably have their hands full just fixing the current engine's bugs. As a player of the game, between choosing major grahpical overhauls or compelling content, I always choose content over looks. Heck I still play EQ1 even tho its dated as heck :).

This is sad since it's nice to see people subbing / re-subbing! I had some issue but I appear to be okay now. In game, low level areas, I'm seeing people about!

I never played DDO, but LOTRO I played for years. There is one serious issue standing stone games has. When they reorganized they came out and said that for the most part WB didnt have input into design decisions, monetization, literally anything that touched the end user playing the game.

On the contrary, according to them Turbine had control over all decisions. Further Standing Stone games was comprised of those same Turbine employees who made those decisions. That is a startling revelation as, when I was active and according to friends who still play up until the Standing Stone announcement a lot of players held to the hope that the games direction, sub systems and tedious grinds were due to WB influence.

Lotro is a beautiful game, there are a lot of GOOD THINGS in that game. Over the years its really gone down hill from some of the choices made, which we now know were all Turbine AKA Standing Stone games.

Armed with that sad reality, I imagine a lot of long time players threw their hands up and said "Im done" (I sure did). Those subbing now, god bless em, are probably going to play that game until it goes the path of AC and will pay to do it. I'll never be fooled by Turbine/Standing Stone games again, they nearly destroyed one of the greatest MMORPG's ever made.

I hope they get this new issue straightened out, LOTRO deserves a better fate.

Stop feeding bullshit to the people you obviously have no idea what you talking about and you are twisting facts to your liking.

Get to know the facts before spilling useless words.

No one is forced to consume/read anything. I assume that people who believe its "bullshit" will shrug and say "lol thats bullshit" When they dont, and feel compelled to become hostile its usually a good indication you've hit the nail on the head. Particularly when they tell you your post is useless.

It begs the question "why reply if you feel its useless"?

Must have some truth to it. LOL

They may have been the ones who "made those decisions" but you have to remember the context. If you're feeding the public company beast with short term profit thinking, you end up with stuff like this in your game. I wouldn't give up on SSG freeing themselves from some of this type of monetization.

*shrug* it's there company to run anyway they want. Its my choice to consume the product or not. I can certainly attest to the fact that several people left LOTRO BECAUSE of the decisions made, whoever made them.

Thats why we have fan sites to give our opinions. I know Im not the only one who holds this one.

Yikes hope the folks affected can get this sorted out quickly and would hope SSG are all over it. Heard some not so nice things about Paypal so I only use it myself when I have no other option but *touch wood* never had any issues personally and hope I never do.

I trust they will reward those inconvenienced... I wonder how/why their Paypal/Payflow issues happened, though.
