Camelot Unchained attacks its own test server with an army of bots

While it’s always important to get players on to test servers for that human element, what if you need a huge army of characters on demand that never give up? That’s when you take Camelot Unchained’s approach by unleashing an army of bots on its test server to stress it out as much as possible.

“Right now, we have bots firing off 20,000 skills per hour, and logging in and out 16 times per minute, to help us not only track down issues like this, but also to stress test the ability system,” the team said in this week’s newsletter.

And when there’s a Camelot Unchained newsletter, there’s always a list of Camelot Unchained tasks that the team has tackled over the past week. Some of the items of note include work on archery mechanics, figuring out where your character respawns when it dies, and the first pass of the “banes and boons” system.

Thanks, but now (this year) is the time for us to deliver on Beta 1 and show the foundations for a great game. We have no reasons/excuses any more. We did, but now with the programming team we have, we have nothing standing in our way but ourselves. :)

I wonder if other devs take the time to do this anymore. I mean, how many times have we seen performance issues during launch due to inadequate stress testing?

I think many devs just use betas as the stress test without measuring or ensuring specific functions.

Refreshing that this group is literally trying to break their game before we do.

Most devs wait far to long into the process to do stress testing, as it can revel fundamental flaws that require a lot of rewrites. So then it’s like we can fix it but we’ll miss our target dates by a lot. So if you wait till a player beta to do a stress test you’ve waited to long.

Umm, not sure what you mean by that? Do you mean:

1) Soft launch – The game is semi-live, might be charging sub $$$, no wipes, etc?

2) Soft launch of Beta 1 – Feature light, but a true Beta meaning no $$$, lots of wipes, lots of new stuff added, etc?

I meant that it will be a true beta in the sense that the game will still be a work in progress and that participants will actually be beta testers and not just early access players.

I mention it because it’s pretty wide in the industry these days to try to avoid calling a game ‘launched’ even though it has. By my definition a game has “Launched” when either (or both) of the following takes place: 1) there will be no more server wipes, and 2) the cash shop is open for business and charging for items to be used in the “beta.* A company can say a game is in beta all they like, but in my opinion if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and takes money for micro-transactions like a duck,** it’s a duck.

* I know that the cash shop part isn’t relevant to CU (God bless you CSE,) but it’s gotten to be the industry norm so I still include it.
** Okay, so the metaphor isn’t perfect.

Edit: I plan to be all over crafting testing.

True beta, lots of wipes, lots of input, lots of yelling at developers, no cash shop, no RMT, lots of iteration and fun.

But I think you knew that already, didn’t ya? :)
