One Shots: I took a picture THIS big!

When you take the best screenshot in the world and want to impress your friends, do you find that you end up exaggerating a tiny bit? Perhaps with wide-flung arm motions and tall tales of shutter speed and multiple lenses?

Reader Matthew dishes up a boast for us from Elder Scrolls Online: “This screenshot amuses me for two reasons. Firstly, my friend Jacob and I met up yesterday for the first time in a week and discovered that we’d somehow dyed our gear almost the same color. Secondly, Jacob decided to mess around whilst I was taking a screenshot but his dancing animation plus my character’s idle ‘look around’ animation has randomly made it look as though Jacob’s Dragon Knight is telling my Sorceror how big the monster he just killed in the dungeon behind us was!”

This is when kobolds mysteriously transform into elder dragons through the power of storytelling. Onward and upward!

I really liked Little Bugbear’s submission of the Hellfire Peninsula skybox, because it reminded me of how stunned we were back in 2007 when we stepped into World of Warcraft’s first expansion and found ourselves drinking in a shattered alien world. It’s strange to me that what was once the cutting edge of newness is now considered ancient history.

“Having replaced many older computer components earlier this year, I reinstalled my most-played games,” Rees Racer wrote. “I hadn’t thought of TERA much recently until this little column about 10 days ago. I essentially started over with a human female Warrior, and have been having a lot of fun. Here she is with the Golden Dragon weapon skins… outrageously comical in practicality, but you’ve got to embrace the insanity and go with it!”

Mysecretid tackles a space archaeological excavation: “Destiny is an MMORPG which uses shooter mechanics for the action, even if Bungie doesn’t want to admit it. I did manage to get a nice pic from a cutscene, as I was about to enter a foreboding temple on the moon.”

While Frodo was running the One Ring into Mordor, Ryuen was off setting up a kingdom to himself in Lord of the Rings Online.

“I’ve spent a lot of time working lately but the ‘Dwarf with delusions of royalty’ found himself in some throne room in Angmar last week so here’s another shot of my character taking a well deserved break,” Ryuen said. “Unfortunately those Angarim dudes do not fashion their thrones with wider Dwarf posteriors in mind.”

Every so often I like to put out a call for MMO screenshots that get “up close and personal” with their subjects. Have you gotten in really close to something for a picture? Let’s see it!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

Sorry one more unintentional up close and personal. This cap is busy. There are all sorts of things on the UI, tons of quests on the right, status bars, other players etc. But I love it. Lol. See, the thing is I was looking through all of those quests on the right trying to figure what to do next while I waited for a raid to pop. And when I glance back at my toon, Yalie, she is looking back. Lol

Yeah, it’s just one of those things that games of this ilk do now days. BDO does something similar. But it was very cool. And her smile and expression are priceless. Almost as of to say. “Chillax, dude. We got this.”

Holy Schneikes… ARK and War Thunder support ANSEL now. I have a GTX 1080, I need to explore that…

http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/ansel/games

ANSEL is Nvidia technology that allows you to take “super resolution” screencaptures, and I mean bloody HUGE. Also to view them as 360 VR stills in Cardboard and PC VR visors.

I had to get in close back during the 64 bit issues in ESO. Some of them were quite …. ummm personal.

Awesome. Look alot like your avatar for this which I assume is you.

MEA could take a lesson. Yeah, different genre, but players want to customize their look and often come up with something much better than the devs could ever imagine.

Up close and personal? Well this Orc definitely has not heard of the concept of personal space.

Hey everybody, sorry I’m late to the party! :-)

I’m honored that one of my pics made the hit list from last week. Thank you, Justin. You put me in good company with those other featured pics!!

This week, a couple more from Destiny, and another pic from Rise of the Tomb Raider — inside an actual Byzantime crypt this time. Woo woo!

The Destiny pics show my alt character, from inside one of the game’s cutscenes..

I also included a standard first-person view shot, so you can see that there’s not a huge quality drop between the cutscene graphics and the actual gameplay graphics. It’s a nice looking game.

For those who might be curious, Destiny uses the first-person view when your character is out adventuring and fighting, but switches to a third-person view in cutscenes, or whenever your character is visiting a “social zone” (i.e. a player hub).

Enjoy. Thanks for sharing all the cool pics, folks!

Your Tomb Raider screens keep tempting me (I already have them to thank/blame for getting back into the previous series recently with Anniversary) but everything I read about the new games makes it sound like there’s very little of the traditional puzzle-like classic gameplay. Does Rise at least have parts that feel like that?

Heya Hirku!

I didn’t like the original Square Enix Tomb Raider reboot (“threeboot”? heh) very much.

It had no real tomb raiding in it at all — only single-room (!) puzzle areas that the game generously called “tombs”

I used to refer to that game as “A Far Cry game modded to have a female protagonist” when I was feeling especially cranky. :-)

I think the current Rise of the Tomb Raider game is much better, although I still don’t love it as much as I loved TR: Legend and its sequel TR: Underworld.

I’d say to make sure you buy Rise of the Tomb Raider during a Steam sale, so that way, if you don’t like it, at least you won’t pay full price to find this out.

Honestly, I would skip the first Square Enix Tomb Raider game entirely, unless you can get it dirt cheap.

It’s got some shiny graphics, but as above, it never, ever felt like a real Tomb Raider game to me.

My opinions only, as usual,

Hope this helps!

Hey thanks, it sounds like we’re on the same page so your opinion was very helpful. I’m the type who happily waits years to buy big releases for five bucks, so I’ll probably do that with TR. The previous trilogy will keep me busy for a long time anyway. Thanks again.

Nice pics as usual. I’ve been wondering about Tomb Raider. Just loaded up the previous version and it is still a lot of fun. Quite a great game.

As above, Rafael, I think Rise of the Tomb Raider is okay as a TR game, so long as you can get it at a good price, but I would skip the first Square Enix Tomb Raider game entirely, if you’re considering it, because it doesn’t really feel like a genuine TR game at all.

My opinions only, of course!

Cheers, pal,

Nice! She is quite the ray of sunshine compared to your other much darker toon. Yup, love the eyes and the little scar, I think, come down her left eye. Nice little detail.

I was going to make a more in depth inquiry with you in response to this. But due experiencing authentication issue over FaceBook accounts…I was locked out of MoP for well over 24 hrs. As you may not see this now…I’ll get you the next time around when BS subject matter is brought up.

Thanks for the compliment though! :)

Image One: The Tengu gate. Pretty please ArenaNet make a Tengu expansion. Maybe even playable Tengu?

Image Two: Simply put is one of the coolest stumps I have ever seen in an MMO. It’s the little things that make MMOs feel alive.

Image Three: I fell off the arena in the Norn starting area. Opps.

Image Four: Is an up close an personal shot of my Goobbue pet. He is so happy with himself.
