The many faces of Camelot Unchained

Terrible pun title in honor of April Fools’ Day! This week’s Camelot Unchained update touches on art, interface, and ability cooldowns, but the most interesting bits are surely the faces and the animation work.

“An image can only say so much about how actually playing the game will feel, but we want to emphasize the time and effort going into making the animations not only look good, but–just as important–feel good,” CSE’s Tyler Rockwell says. “In the past, our ‘jump’ only popped your character into the air and played a looping animation for the time you hovered. While Andrew re-hooks up ‘jump’ with the new animation system, Scott has worked out a jump with a prep and recover phase to smooth the in and out of the jump. This example also includes a pose specific to carrying a two-handed weapon, vs. having a shared pose for all weapons. Likewise, he’s begun working on a jump animation that will play when the player hits a certain velocity, to create a ‘running leap.’ The latter idea is still conceptual, but is part of our goal of making things ‘feel’ good.”

Check out the new art below, along with Mark Jacobs’ video update.

The face on the far right kinda looks like Adam Levine.

I’m not gonna lie, Jacobs… been pretty skeptical of CU, as a veteran of DAoC that still sits around the hearth telling the kids about how they just don’t make PvP mechanics like they used to.

It’s shaping up nicely, and starting to be the game I’m looking forward to. Just remember, that there are various reasons that people still talk about a game so old, so fondly… it wasn’t just one thing or the other, it was the entire recipe. If you can rekindle that feeling with a new coat of paint and some new features, you’ve got me for 10 more years.

That said? I don’t want to wait :p

If you’re expecting DAOC you’re going to be disappointed and I don’t even have to have played DAOC to know that. If you go into anything expecting it be something else you will always be disappointed. Treat CU as it’s own game because it is. Enjoy it for what they offer, not what some other game you wish wasn’t dead offered.

I think you’re wrong, but only time will tell. MJ created both, both were 3 factions (practically the exact same factions), no coincidence that Camelot is in both names… Siege warfare? I think it’s safe to say this is the spiritual successor. I completely expect big differences, don’t get me wrong… but this is certainly MJ’s attempt to bring DAoC into the next generation.

So… :p

Can I make a flute out of cherry blossom tree wood? If not I’ll probably pass on this game. #firstworldproblems

Probably have inventory slots on the cash shop, or an ESO-like subscription-based crafting bag.

It’s a start. :)

I actually have over 500, but they aren’t ready for inclusion into the game. I don’t know how many we’ll actually end up with, but it will be more than a few and less than 500.

“Mark now has a bunch more spreadsheet work in progress. To start off with, he’s covering wood types (currently 238 and counting) and corresponding stats.”
Damn, 238 wood types? Crafters are gonna have fun. ^^

Well, as of now all but one of the woods are from our world. Once I get them in and working well, I start on some of the fantasy ones. Should be fun.

A catapult made of saraclivea wood that hurls projectiles so far that they vanish at the horizon. O.o I guess it must be fun for the designers to play with fantasy wood properties!

Looking really good. Love the varieties of armor and weapons. Now what’s looking to be nice choices in character customization. So happy!

Thanks, as I’ve been saying, slowly but surely we are turning into a game and not just a tech demo.

All those hipster undercuts though…

…it’s only truly hipster if it contains two large robust pigtails.

Don’t confuse today’s hipster bandwagon trends with historical fashion.

I like the environments but not a fan of how the characters look.

Not many character pics using full armor and new animations have been released. Which pics are you referencing?
