One Shots: Avenging angel

When you push a player too far, commit too many crimes, and flaunt your evil with one of those tacky pre-battle speeches, you’re going to get a face full of avenging angel.

Tyler, take it away! “No matter how many of The Secret World’s world bosses I fight (and I have fought a lot; I may have a problem), I never get tired of seeing the swarms of players that rush in to take them down, the riot of different outfits and ability effects, the massive bosses withering away under the combined fire, the sheer epic mayhem of it all. Add the spectacular effects from ultimate abilities, and you have an endless source of amazing screenshot fodder.”

Welcome to an all-email submissions edition of One Shots! Remember kids, when you email a screenshot and a story, you get to cut to the front of the line!

“Due to hearing about Age Of Conan going into maintenance mode, I have been roaming around taking shots in 4k,” wrote in Boom. “I thought I would share them and see if any make the grade this week!”

Congrats Boom, you made the grade. A-plus-plus-plus! Seriously, this is one gorgeous vista!

Captain Rees Racer reporting in: “No matter how long I’ve been playing Elite Dangerous, there are certain aspects that are unnerving. Traveling between systems involves using your ship’s Frame Shift (warp/jump/light speed) Drive. Every explosive exit from this mode places you directly in the path of that system’s largest star — in its corona, no less. Whilst this enables one to sometimes necessarily scoop fuel to continue on, it nevertheless causes my heart to skip a beat, even after doing it a thousand times.”

“In the last One Shots column you asked for screenshots that unnerved us in online RPGs,” Little Bugbear said. “I literally came across myself in World of Warcraft back when I was in high school: look, name, everything. The NPC even predicted my future as I later went on to work at a bakery for awhile (NPC me and I really do love our sweets).”

Ralph the Wonder Llama blames this one on us: “I started up a new warrior in TERA last week to take advantage of the ‘Sword and Hoard’ leveling event. Then along came the One Shots challenge to give me an excuse to run around attacking monsters with my UI turned off. All in all it was an exciting week, and I’m pleased to report that obtaining screenshots like this one resulted in fewer player deaths than you might think.”

Thanks for all of the great email submissions this time around! For this week’s screenshot challenge, I want to see some pictures from the afterlife. What does it look like when you die in your MMO and have to do a corpse run? In some games, the visuals shift markedly — or you’re even taken somewhere “special.” Let’s see it!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

A few offerings about the afterlife.

The blueish one is from Elder Scrolls Online. My little Nightblade died to a nasty Frost Atronach and this is what she saw as she hovered near her body.

And of course no spread on the afterlife is complete without shots from The Secret World. My Templar sacrificed herself in the backroom of the nasty hotel in Savage Coast for the cause then went to visit with Carrie Black before returning to the world of the living.

This is undoubtedly my favorite pre-corpse run screenshot. Those kimogilas just did not want me to get to my wheat harvesters on Lok..

As is becoming somewhat of a pattern, we were in Ark for 15 hours yesterday. 8:00am – 11:00pm. Holy hell!

That said, I promised “gorgeous” photos from Elite: Dangerous and I want to deliver.

Not sure how these will order out, so… in no order: The Galactic Core as seen from the edge of the galaxy; The Soul Nebula in two shots from ~2k and then ~>1k LY away; The Soul Nebula and the Heart Nebula from ~3-4k LY away together; A neutron star.

Love the neutron star!

There is, apparently, a whole field of Neutron Stars rather close to the “Bubble” and very accessible to earlier-game players. I need to make it there, but by reports it is amazing. Now that I have my AspX all set I may give it a go sometime.

I’m on my way out to another Nebula currently. There’s been a limit for missions placed where with the next update everything gets auto-cancelled if not completed. So I’m rushing to finish a bunch of stuff right now getting some great shots :)

Still deeply involved in moving across town, but here are a few non-spoiler screens from Mass Effect: Andromeda.

If some of the screens look oddly cropped, that’s because I cut out mission overlay details which might constitute spoilers for some.

So much of the game is about exploration and discovery, as well as the twists and turns of the story, I didn’t want to risk accidentally taking any of that away from any of you who might play.

Interestingly, when I started the game, I had intended to go all N7 in my armor choices, but the exploration aspect of the game appealed to my true nature more, so I’ve been using the Recon variant of the Andromeda Initiative gear instead.

Compare my character’s armor in the level 1 screenshot, versus the later pics — Recon helmet has a scanner attached on one side.

I once read someone referring to the Mass Effect series as “the modern answer to Star Trek“. Given the strong (and necessary) military aspect of the first trilogy’s story, I wasn’t sure I could agree — but as the new game broadens the scope of the kinds of things the Mass Effect universe can include, I begin to see what the writer meant.

In other game news, while sifting through things for the move, I actually found a disc of archived screenshots from the first year of City of Heroes, compiled by my friends’ and I during our adventures in the game.

There are a LOT of pics, and it will tale me a bit of time to sift through them, but if there’s any interest, I could try to post a few of the more interesting ones here sometime?

Have a great week everyone. Take care of yourselves, please!

Say what you will about the Imperials in Elite: Dangerous but there is no denying they make a very sexy spaceship. This is my newly acquired Imperial Clipper on her maiden flight heading towards an engineer location for a bit of a tune up.

While she is a capable ship especially seen as I managed to save enough pennies to A rate all her main components a bit of engineer tinkering under the bonnet will ensure I get the very best she can offer.

I’m a little sad I can’t stomach the Imperial penchant for slavery because their ships are gorgeous. I’m reading Reclamation right now and the glimpses into Imperial culture are really eye-opening to how starkly they sit in contrast to the Feds.

really was good times to hunt World Boss on TSW but look like now we going to have something like a portal to “Instance Boss” or they going to low the boss to be for 10 players and thats could be kind of lame.

my question is what going to happens with the epic hallowed boss fight :S

The harbour of Khemi. Good memories. I used to wait for minigames there with my Stygian Assassin or my Bear Shaman.

God I wish I could play an action RPG in the conan world, with Funcom’s writing and encounter design… could.. be as big as God of War. Quite the stretch and it would need alot of funding… Funcom x Platinum Games/Ninjatheory. Daydreams. The setting, mood and tone, is quite similar.

Your idea seems like a “license to print money”, as the saying goes. Hopefully, someone who can make it happen is listening?

i bought the division outfit pack before finding out that it was being offered free to owners of the division. i filed a refund ticket and ubi hooked it up tho so i have credits to spend on something cool in the future.

i changed my hair in addition to my clothes this week. i really love how much freedom the game’s cosmetic system gives the player vs what you tend to get in games. buddy of mine used face paint for his toon this weekend as well.

we accidentally flew past the highest mountain peak in teh game this past week so we landed and took a selfie.

this cut scene blew me away. part of me couldn’t help but think they were looking for a legit AO rating with shit like this. until i remembered that AO is more about sexy things than anything else.

the water in this game looks absolutely fanatastic. adn everytime flying past a lake or hitting up an island just reinforces it.

Very nice visuals here, thanks. I agree with you that the ESRB ratings stop being useful as a content guide beyond “M means kids should not play this”.

Even the M rating keywords can be fairly vague. For example, I’ve seen so many M games labelled to warn of so-called “Partial Nudity” and I’ve seen nothing of the kind in the games.

What does “Partial Nudity” mean in the context of games, anyway? Nipple pasties? Side-boob? A bare bottom? Hardly civilization-ending stuff.

Any little kid I’ve known who sees a bare bum someplace, a hundred bucks says the first thing they do is laugh. Little kids don’t parse nudity the way adults do, until they’re told otherwise.

And I’d much rather have little Billy or Susie see brief, ordinary nudity in a game, that see someone shot point-blank in the face, or tortured, or impaled.

Somehow, I think the violence would damage them more …

But I digress, and I apologize. Thanks for the pics!

Cheers,

tsw and gta5 come to mind for partial nudity with the latter having some sexual content (lapdances and implied sex) and hitting M rating.

the AO game that comes to mind first and foremost is the game with ellen page fully nude in a couple scenes. so rule of thumb is dicks and vaginas = easy AO afaict. which most retailars won’t sell AO games including steam (steam will sell censored versions. and obviously early access games that are not yet rated but would likely be AO like conan exiles)

Nice caps. Yeah, some games that character customization right. Some don’t. I’m playing MEA right now. Having a blast to be honest. Don’t listen to the negative hype. It is a great game. BUT.. they missed on character creation. It is bad. Default is awful, presets are worse. And if you want to make your own, you have to customize the default or presets with limited sliders and options.

You have probably seen some screen caps of how awful CC is MEA. Finally, after about 3 hours and several restarts I got my Sara Ryder to look decent.

Totally agree the CC is the worst yet, but as you’ve shown, with a little effort you can produce some great (ok, decent!) faces.

A good job! Yeah, I’ve been surprised by how limited the character design can be in Mass Effect: Andromeda. As you say, there are lots of fine things in the game, but it feels like somebody fell down when it came to overseeing the character visuals.

Cheers

Understandable. They don’t make it easy. I think I took about an hour to get my male avatar to look passable for play — and note I said “passable”. :-) He doesn’t look like I hoped he would, but he looks good enough for me to play. I didn’t want to wait to play any longer.

yeah I don’t get how the CC is so limited here but yet in DA:I it has so much more freedom. They are using the same game engine

yeah i’ve watched some of it on streams including character creation. i warmed up to the characters they created after some time but while they were making them i just felt like they looked awful.

otherwise based on streams it’s really mostly just the one character in all the memes that is really badly done from what i can tell. others seem fine for the most part.
