Ship of Heroes has formally launched its Kickstarter today as promised, with a $400,000 ask.

The game is an Unreal 4 engine, full-scale MMORPG heavily inspired by City of Heroes, but with a bit more sci-fi flair as its core city is literally on a massive starship. Alpha is expected to begin later this year.

Ship of Heroes recreates the atmosphere and feel of City of Heroes, but upgraded in every way: cutting-edge graphics, a new, exciting setting to explore, meaningful character creation choices, and numerous other improved mechanics. That’s why this game needs to exist.”

“People say that MMOs can’t succeed on Kickstarter these days, because everyone has been burned by scams,” Heroic Games writes today. “But we’ve invested our own savings to build a playable alpha with team combat first, so you don’t have to take our word for it. You can see for yourself how the game will look. We’ve also proven that we can actually build a game on time. We’ve posted a rapid development schedule on our website. We’ve hit every milestone, and will continue to do so.”

The game has previously demoed its functional combat, UI, and genuinely impressive character customization. Our interview with the team earlier this year may be useful to potential donors as well.

Update: The Kickstarter FAQ notes that everyone who pledges to the game gets a copy automatically. “The initial download of the game is free to all Kickstarter donors at launch.”
