Star Trek Online announces the end of STO Gateway

One of Star Trek Online’s lesser-used features is about to be chucked into a black hole, never to be seen again.

On the official forums, Cryptic announced that it will be closing STO Gateway tomorrow: “Captains, the Star Trek Online Gateway system will be shutting down on April 13th. While some members of the community enjoyed it, the system never garnered enough interest to warrant further support. There are no plans for a similar feature at this time, and we apologize for any inconvenience its removal may cause.”

The Star Trek Online Gateway was a web portal that allowed players to remotely log into their accounts to view character and ship stats, accolades, fleet holdings, and other information. It never emerged from beta after being launched at the end of 2012.

To be honest I did like the idea of being able to access my account through the STO Gateway on my tablet to what they wanted it to do. One of those things was the ability to access the Duty Officer system and perhaps the newly added Admiralty. Thus, if I wasn’t at home to login and play at least I can keep updating my Duty Officer and Admiralty assignments through the Gateway. But as many have mentioned, Cryptic never fixed the issues it had or updated it to allow us to do things like access the Duty Officer system. Nor did they look at creating it as an app for tablets instead of a website. I hope one day they re-consider the Gateway, make it an app in which we can do things like the accessing Duty Officer Admiralty systems to collect complete assignment rewards and assign new assignments.

Considering after the initial launch of the STO Gateway – nothing further was done to it or with it {Except for providing Developer Al Rivera with an excuse when game system and UI changes were made that players HATED. His usual response: “Oh, well this change will make it possible to better integrate [Feature X] with the STO Gateway…” <— Yeah right. Even then player knew that was BS because Cryptic never added anything to the STO Gateway.

Make the data available to the public in an API and let fans create these websites. This is one of Daybreak games rare triumphs. Everquest 2, DC Universe Online, PlanetSide 2 all have fantastic character and guild viewing websites because of this.

As some others have remarked, it had no following because they never gave it any value. The blame is completely in their court.

That’s sort of annoying. People didn’t use it because it was broken and needed development resources. This sort of circular reasoning always seems to bug me. Next, they’ll be shutting down the Foundry using this exact same argument.

Just like what they did with exploration missions.

Yup. Instead of blaming their own lackluster support of the features, they blame the community.

The really good games always have a user/community Wiki that’s better than the one the game company provides anyway, I think.

It’s kind of hard to get people to use something when they said they were no longer going to support it a couple of years ago.

Been playing STO for years, and honestly, I wasn’t even aware this was a thing.

Well it’s not like STO’s gateway was ever really useful in the first place. Neverwinter’s Gateway, though, is one of the best out-of-game resources I’ve ever seen, though. Shame that under the same banner STO’s never got up to Neverwinter’s level.

Pretty much this. I at least hoped you could do Admiralty or basic Duty Officer missions, but nope.
