Star Citizen Around the Verse on the Javelin and weekend free-fly

Cloud Imperium’s Sandi Gardiner and Forrest Stephan return this week for another episode of Star Citizen’s Around the Verse. The highlight of the show is meant to be the lengthy Javelin creation walkthrough, but I’m more impressed watching Erin Roberts rattle off the five million things the UK studio is working on, from ongoing work on the shopping interface and item placement system and conversation system to “new gameplay elements like suit punctures, oxygen recharging, and depressurization,” among a few dozen other features.

Gardiner and Stephan also allude to a free-fly weekend for the holiday, along with new rewards for referrals and a ship sale. “I don’t want to spoil the official announcement but all I can say is ‘Pink Dragonfly,'” Stephan says. The whole episode is tucked down below.

I think the developers probably have another year and half’s grace period but beyond that if the game still looks years away from being at a point where it is a not even close to a releasable state then it would be reasonable to assume the game is in trouble .

In the event we are still here in 2019 ( or even 2020 or beyond ) there will still be fanboys still defending the developers and that they would be happy to wait yet more years for a good game but I think they will become an increasingly vocal minority and the more time passes beyond then end of 2018 the more concern will grow about this games development .

20 months seems a long time but it will pass pretty quickly .

3.0 is “scheduled” for end of June*, so I would say hopefully by the end of the year.

Love the new UI’s for the trading and helmets. Can see a lot of gameplay possibilities with the tiredness mechanic. Also like that we’ll be able to see “space dust” trails on teh ship. Really helps with tracking what maneuvers are happening. Hopefully they remember to dampen the trails on stealth ships.

And the ongoing question of “will I be dead before this game comes out’ continues for another week.

The way things are going in the world unless things calm down a bit there is a good chance many of will be dead before Star Citizen comes out .

Yep – 4+ years of full active game development is REALLY LONG for a game like this…oh, wait…

After 4+ years many World of Warcraft was at a point where it was almost ready for release . The average development is anywhere between 4-6 years so from that perspective you would expect Star Citizen to be a lot further along in its development than it is .

Essentially in the average timeline for an mmo you would expect a release by the end of 2018 but I know a lot of my friends in our online gaming community who play Star Citizen that is probably overly optimistic .

Of course Star Citizen by its very nature is far more ambitious than most mmo’s but that also begs the question is it too ambitious and that with all the best will in the world have the developers exceeded their ability to deliver such a game .

i’m still waiting for the “OK we are at beta, the game is close to launch, let’s squash bugs” phase. I want to know what the game actually features, what it actually has, what it actually does. Some of the “projections” seem quite fanciful. I want to know when it will do those things.

ftr it seems they got on board with the thing every other early access game has to deal with and start squashing bugs in a meaningful instead of showful way. they recently released 2.6.3 which the big change from .2 is squashing a really annoying and game brreaking bug.

as far as delivering features, we’re wistfully waiting on 3.0 which is fabled to be almost an actually reasonable early access day 1 game in itself.

when? i’m waiting on my irc bros to tell me when they give the 3.0 time line which as always should be taken with a massive grain of salt.

Bit off topic but I did notice similarities in that trailer to Empire Strikes Back I just hope its a little more original in terms of plot than Force Awakens was .

I was curious if MJ has ever streamed Star Citizen for the MO community. This might be a great opportunity to see how this game has progressed.

From the UK update, it was quite nice to see some of the Item 2.0 features coming together, as well as the UI iterations. From my understanding, we should be seeing the 3.0 schedule today. Will they stay on schedule? Doubtful, but it should at least give a better idea of what all is remaining before 3.0 is released.

3.0 schedule is out and plan for June 29… Another slap in the face for those shooting 2018 or never :)

I always admire when games have free weekends. Gives folks a chance to find out firsthand what state it’s in and thus make an education decision before purchasing.
