Secret World Legends still hopes for a spring release, will expand beta to include Egypt soon

Our latest glimpse at the reworked universe of Secret World Legends came yesterday courtesy of an hour-long livestream on Twitch. For those of us on the outside of the NDA-slathered beta, it’s pretty much the only glimpse we have into what’s going on as testing continues.

A post on Reddit contains a helpful summary of talking points from the stream. Funcom confirmed that it is still aiming for a spring launch, saying that the testing pool will be widened with more invites and that Egypt is coming soon to the beta. The team discussed the fluid nature of testing changes, including reticules (which can be adjusted), quality-of-life improvements, hints of a “clothing closet,” dungeon lockout timers, and the elimination of the least-used combat skills. Rewards for subscribers (patrons) are still being figured out, so no official word on that yet.

You can watch the stream after the break!

Seems the same. The changed control schemes don’t make much for a game.

Also, the animations still look stiff as fuck. It’s still you walking with your hands like you took a dump and didn’t clean properly.

They need to read these comments. This looks like “action” combat without any action.

“There will be lock out timers on dungeons, but you can buy keys to unlock with in game currency. Dungeons will be used as a way to improve equipment faster. Whatever loot chest drops and you find you don’t like the items you got you can sacrifice to your gear to help improve their power. Better drops for harder dungeons. Cost of upgrade will scale with color of weapon (green will cost less than purple). Each loot chest that drops from bosses will have a chance to be an upgraded version and have random bonus items. You can choose not to open chest to help lower level people in your group. You pay “keys” to open chests which you can replenish.”

Haha, this game is dead to me now.

What the fuck are they even thinking. That screams ‘desperate for money so we can keep TSW floating’ to me.

basically reads to me as “game is only free so we can justify charging triple of a sub fees price for loot”

I know right? Why not just make people buy a key to level up too while you’re at it.

Wait, were they playing Legends? Looked like they were literally playing Secret World.

I don’t understand what they’re trying to accomplish with this ‘reboot’ at all, but honestly I guess it’s a good thing if the game still retains its feel. . . at the same time I don’t know how they’re going to attract a wider audience beyond making it F2P.

judging by the dungeon system, what theyre trying to accomplish is wringing you dry of money for mininal effort.

Reader
Sorenthaz

What, are they charging entrance fees?

Reader

Lockouts on dungeons with keys in the cashshop.

This absolute confirms everything I suspected and not in a good way. :(

Well, the one thing i’ve been looking forward to hasn’t been changed….combat and animations.
So, what exactly have they “revamped”?

Reader
Sorenthaz

Looks like the combat controls were changed…? But yeah I don’t see how it’s significantly different or revamped.

I enjoy TSW, flawed as it is, currently subscribe. I was concerned about the games future, considering how long it had been between updates pre-TSW:L announcement.

These videos are killing hope.

Not even the people on the stream believe this BS. They keep apologizing.

Y’all have your opinions, but I think this is pretty fucking cool.

Adding more interactive mechanics to the combat & weapons not only adds depth to the combat, but also heightens the immersion of the atmosphere. Rather than slapping “3 Round Burst” 5 times until my Elemental Force can proc, I actually have more detailed and immersive mechanics.

Only thing I’m worried about is the time. I’d honestly like them to take awhile longer and really hammer out the details. Spring just seems way too soon. Then again, we have no idea how long they’ve been working on this before they announced it.

That video pretty much did in my excitement for this “overhauled” Secret World. Not sure as to what they are striving for? Why kill the old game if all they are doing is some minor improvements?

Anyone who still loves the old version knows it’s over for them as they are going to let it die with no content updates, and anyone like myself who was looking forward to this “new” version is, as far as i can tell, going to be left asking; Where’s the overhaul? Why make me start all over? Why lose all my achievements, items, bonus’s… But if you want a future with this game you gotta go SWL.

Maybe they are leaving the old game as is to not piss off the vets, but… it’s left to rot? They are going to be pissed anyway. Maybe it’s to bring in new people or get people that tried and left to try again but it’s the same game still. I’m sure most people, myself included have stopped playing the old one, why bother with a new one coming, but it’s not new? It’s the same damn game just a NGE version of it, so why don’t they simply upgrade the old game eludes any reason? There is no logical reason they couldn’t re-brand it with the NGE and let people keep their old character’s (TOONS! podcast joke) and stuff.

I’m repeating what has already been written but it’s all that can be said…

I don’t get it?

Well there are a few reasons. One is to get new players with their f2p model. The next is to monetize their cash shop and try to profit in the way other f2p games are. Finally, it’s to find a way to get money out of those who already have GM status in TSW, but will have to replay the game and spend money they most likely otherwise wouldn’t have if it was the original game.

To sum it up, it all boils down to trying to increase their profit margins.

As someone with GM status I don’t see any reason I’d need to spend money? My GM status will carry over, as will much of my store purchases.

While your GM status will roll over, it will be rolled over into a patron status which they have yet to give the details on the benefits of that status beyond having weapons unlocked in the beginning that f2p don’t initially have unlocked.

So while neither of us know what that entails, I’m sure there will be new mechanics introduced (like the weapon upgrade system MJ has mentioned in her interview) and some of these mechanics will be aimed at bringing in additional revenue. Also, the sheer fact you have to replay all the content to get to where you are now in the old game means they hope returning players will want to take advantage of cash shop convenience items, such as exp boosts, to speed up the process.

We shall see what ends up happening, but I’d be shocked if they weren’t trying to devise ways to get more money out of GMs with this transition than they are currently are. If they don’t, then they are squandering a chance to make more profit.

That’s not stuff I would ever spend money on. I mean, if I gotta do all the missions on the way to complete all my achievements and whatnot I’m not gonna be lacking for XP.

I don’t get it.

The combat looks identical to TSW base game.

Yup. Can’t do a “redo” with the old engine. Sigh… same old story.

I know I’ll play this new one as i love the atmosphere and story, MAN i love it, nothing like it. But right now the thought of slugging it through past blue mountain for a third time isn’t leaving very inspired atm.

Clearly you missed the reticle in the center of the screen. Reticles mean ACTION!

The more I see, the more I become genuinely annoyed. What part of this feels completely revamped? Looks like the same old SW.

Please, please, please change the animations. The battle stance and running animations look laughably bad.

A spring release would mean a release within the next two months. Which would be remarkable. Not only is there no announced release date, but also the current testing includes 1/3 or so of zones and doesn’t yet have all the weapons. I just can’t help suspecting that this might end up actually happening in late summer/early fall.

Reader
Nathan Aldana

which is a problem given the fact we know TSW is dead means very few are gonna be putting in money

Reader
rafael12104

Hmm. I’ve seen devs whose definition of screen extended well into summer. Lol. But I would err on the side of caution if I was Funcom and just simply say fall.
