WRUP: A new and largely identical frontier edition

The fun thing about new frontiers is that anything you haven’t explored before technically qualifies as a new frontier. This week’s What Are You Playing, for example, is exploring the new frontier of 9:00 a.m. EDT. And guess what? It’s functionally more or less identical to the existing time slot we’ve always used, except that it’s a bit earlier. It’s a new frontier, but it’s also a fairly boring frontier.

Then again, that’s human beings for you. We are constantly re-indexing our experiences so each new thing we’re exposed to becomes part of the existing mental landscape we occupy. So sure, the first time you go to space, it’s all about gasping in wonder. The thousandth time, though, you find yourself going into another galaxy in cryo-stasis because now space travel is boring and everyone goes to space.

Anyhow, let us know what you’re up to this weekend in the comments. It might be new for the moment.

Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): It’s gonna be a busy weekend outdoors and on the road, so I’ll mainly only have time for Pokémon Go, though I’d like to do a bit more Overwatch for the event. I don’t really care much for any of the skins, but Blizzard made something akin to Battleborn, the hero fighter that felt superior in terms of gameplay but sadly didn’t have the player base support Overwatch got.

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): Saturday I’ve got plans out of range of the ol’ PC, but Sunday is up in the air; with Super Adventure Box over, I’m not sure whether I’ll be back into Guild Wars 2 right away or putter around elsewhere. I might try to change things up. I might have an idea for another video brewing too…

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): A bit of Final Fantasy XIV and some more Mass Effect: Andromeda, along with figuring out trading routes in Black Desert. I’ve been really down and unhappy lately, so I might mix things up a little bit in the hopes of finding some old familiar stomping grounds, like in Final Fantasy XI.

Justin Olivetti (@Sypster, blog): The new Lord of the Rings Online anniversary scavenger hunt is going to keep me busy for a long, long time… but I’m not complaining! I would also love to get some time in with my Guild Wars 2 Engineer and mop up World of Warcraft emissary quests that keep piling up on me. At least I have flying now!

MJ Guthrie (@MJ_Guthrie, blog): Gaming for me will be extremely sparse this weekend as I am out of town for a family funeral. WTB rez scroll. If I do manage some time, I will cheat and defy death as absolutely much as possible!

I finished ME:A a bit ago and enjoyed it despite and the negative wankering online. Not playing anything right now…nothing has my interest.

I’ve been playing a lot of Fallout Shelter lately.
I’m also downloading Villagers and Heroes right now to give that a try.
I also just downloaded Runescape as I have not yet played the latest edition (aka I haven’t played Runescape since the original Runescape, which was like a decade ago).
Finally, I will be playing DCUO on Xbox One and Pokemon Moon on 3DS.

When not gaming I have been catching up on Bleach, watching My Hero Academia, and dipping into Silver Spoon to check that out. Oh, and listening to Simon and Garfunkle and watching the game theorists and the film theorists on youtube.

Aaaand I watched the televised King of the Kill event on the CW.

So besides catering for a friend’s wedding, I have been glued to a screen since Friday and will continue to do so for as long as I can get away with ;)

In a major MMO rut at the moment. Nothing is appealing to me – i think i’m just burned out on fantasy in general. I may give SWTOR another go to change it up a bit. In the meantime, i reinstalled STO. The game vomited out features as soon as i logged on, so i’m currently going through the clean-up exercise until i figure out what the hell i’m supposed to be doing.

Playing a bit of EVE, building a crusier for my f2p toon, and working on faction status. Jita was camped by an enemy faction all day so that made for an interesting time for my faction.

On the final dungeon in P5 with around 100 hours played. Fantastic game but the easiest megaten game hands down, and in a series like 30+ games strong thats a real difficulty lowbar. Still a great game but still not my goty thus far, it oozes production value but Nier Automata just feels like it has a bit more heart in it for lack of a better term. Like P5 was made for another by the numbers atlus money maker but nier came out of nowhere and seemed to be made for no reason beyond the creators wanted to make it and expected it to sell poorly and that kind of comes across if you really get into trying to 100% both games.
Its a great jrpg mind, best this gen and last hands down, but behind the art style and music the story is very simple, the characters are all pretty tropey and by the numbers and after a two console gen dev time i had hoped for a little more creative risks taken overall.

also -since the switch is still sold out everywhere and i cannot play the zelda i bought, yes i was one of those 2% :p- i had they very good luck to find a barely used, spotless PS Vita with a memory card for £20! those things do not exist in my neck of the woods anymore so i snapped that up and as well as being able to play my cross play games like Vagrant Story, FFT, FFIX and Shovel Knight and so on there have been some games i have been dying to play like Yomawari: Night Alone. Which is this tremendously atmospheric game about a little girl in a japanese suburb alone at night looking for her missing dog as ghosts and monsters stalk the nighttime streets. Could be a kids warped perceptions of things being alone outside afterdark, could be completely legit but i really recommend it if you have a vita or use steam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Li5YQxI_WQg

and still making dat sweet gil in FFXIV, lotta folks used to WoW (or finally jumping from FFXI after being mad salt for years it wasnt FFXI-2 after RDM got announced) hearing Heavensward is over going “well its going to be a year till the expansion right? lots of catch up time” and then they freak when they see its 57 days till Stormblood releases. Which means lots of new players hurriedly leveling crafting jobs which means the markets booming if you know what to sell :p

After four hours of hard labor I sat in a chair with two ice cold coronas and watched robins flit about my yard looking for food for an hour and a half. It was one of my most spiritual moments I’ve had in some time – which I seem to be having more of lately.

For albums I listened to Kate Bush for the 300th time this month and Kendrick Lamar’s new album – which I really (really) dig. It’s hard to follow up such a solid album as ‘Pimp’ but he came close imo. Love the guy. Not as much as K. Bush.

Games – just Path of Exile. It’s all I have time for and I’m nearing my first lvl 90 and getting deep into the hard maps.

Messing around with SWTOR, Lv 1-20 Sith Warrior.

Happy Earth Day everyone! I spent the first part of my weekend taking my daughter to Urgent Care for a case of the flu that doesn’t want to subside. Later I spent a little Earth Day quality time cleaning up roadside trash with my son. I haven’t been doing a lot of MMO gaming lately, mostly because I only get time in small increments and it’s hard to align my schedule with anyone I usually game with. So, I’ll spend what gaming time I have tinkering with my WoW Lich King private server, and keep moving through Planescape: Torment.

I hope you all have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

I’m going to a surprise birthday party for my cousin. It’s now her turn to reach thirty years old.

No gaming plans. I’m pretty much waiting for the next GW2 release at this point. It’d be lovely if an expansion announcement came along with it, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

Anyways, have a good weekend everyone. May it be a lovely one.

Highlight was going back to Defense of Crete in Penelope’s offline AOEO emulator. Was only for 10 minutes, but I really missed that game and couldn’t help but smile as my out-of-practice self got schooled.

Deep into SWTOR this week. Not sure how I got back into it, but spent my free time Rping, working my way through the eternal championship, and trying to get a new character to Dark V.

Also played a level of Snake Pass each night. Quite challenging for me…never imagined I would delay playing through Yooka-Laylee, but I did. ;)

Having made the Heleus sector habitable for humans in ME:A it’s time for me to go back to the long dark of Moria in LoTRO.
I also need to finish up some Noblegarden achievements in WoW as I decided I want to get my hands on the violet proto drake this year.

I just finished off Uncharted 4 about 30 minutes ago, so now I’m sort of at a bit of a loss as to where to go next. I did not care for the epilogue: it was good, and had a nice bit of emotional closure; but I felt like it was an unneeded second ending, and was closing the door too permanently on returning to Nathan Drake and Co at some point in the future.

I’ve been very slowly making my way through Mass Effect Andromeda. It’s not bad, but I’m not really feeling any pull from the story; I’ve tried every Mass Effect game at this point, and I just don’t get the appeal. Furthermore, a mega budget should look much better than this one does. I’m not talking about animations, I’m mainly talking about art direction and character modeling: compared to many of its contemporaries, this game is just not very appealing to look at. Still, I obviously liked it enough at 8 hours into the trial to flat out purchase it, and at about 40 hours of playtime at this point I don’t feel like the game owes anything even if I never play another second. And I’ll probably get around to it at some point.

I’ve been considering getting Persona 5 a lot over the last couple weeks, but I dunno… It’s very Japanese. And turn based. But then again, I thought all the Civilization games looked unappealing until I game Civ 6 a shot, and ended up loving it. Still thinking.

And SWTOR just dropped the whole 5.2 thing, which has me considering grabbing a month just to see if things are actually improved since I last played. It’s been nearly 4 months since I realistically spent any longer than 30 minutes at a stretch playing, so the various band-aids might have made things tolerable. I’d love it if things were actually improved there, but I kind of suspect that if I actually try to play again, after fifteen minutes something will remind me of why I was so pissed off when I stopped playing, and I’ll have ended up just flushing fifteen bucks down the toilet.

So, tl;dr… what am I playing? Hell if I know.

The appeal of mass effect is its a dating sim for people too embarrassed by the usual anime art style of most of the games in the genre. Dont let anyone fool you saying the monstrously derivative story thats outright lifted from multiple classic sci-fi novels is the draw, those folks just have a thirst for blueberry booty or something like most modern bioware games :p

Playing through Mass Effect: Andromeda. Also slowly progressing through Sryth. Its pretty cool text RPG with well written adventures. Also hopping into Discworld MUD from time to time.

On MMO front nothing really. Anathema (Elysium) is dying and there arent any twink games atm. Im waiting for Warmane’s TBC server that gonna launch soon. Logged in AoC and LoTRO this week, but didnt feel like playing

I’ve put ESO away until Morrowind (and the Warden class) is released in 6 weeks, so I’ve been spending a bit more time in TERA, and still having…well…FUN. Then after all the frenetic moving about and pretty colours exploding in my face for a couple of hours, I unwind with Winning Putt…where I might end up in Fourball Match with golfers in spacesuit costumes and/or SCUBA gear, and flaming golf balls.

Probably League of Legends, FFXIV, Breath of the Wild, Smite, and maybe some Mass Effect Andromeda.

Not playing games so much as researching some games I wanna play. I’ve suddenly got a hankering to play a Wizardry-like kinda game. Right now I’m looking at Elminage, Stranger of Sword City, and Operation Abyss, trying to decide which one I wanna go with.
Though I’ve been making progress with a new playthrough of Lufia 2. I have so many newer games on my plate, but so many retro games have been calling to me lately.

Well, I have Mass Effect Andromeda out of my system. One complete play through covering every mission I could find. I started another as another “class” but my tank is already on empty about halfway through.

So, BnS it is, for this weekend. And Nier:Automata will get a few hours for sure. What a great game! Seriously, it may be one of the best games I have ever played.

i am loving most of the neir automata fan art on my tumblr feed the past couple months.

not so fond of the straight up rule 34 shit of it mind you, not that, as i understand that, that stuff is entirely inappropriate in this case. XD

Reader
rafael12104

Oh yes. Lol. That. Well, the art work has been fantastic. I steer clear of the rule 34 stuff. It just strange for me to be playing a game and be thinking about my character in untoward ways.

deekay_plus
Reader
deekay_plus

fanart type stuff blogs i follow don’t usually do rule 34 so it was a bit surprising to see.

and my understanding of the franchise/creator’s stuff is that rule 34 stuff is at home with it tho so yeah lol.idk tho, never played his games before, and not playing this one.

Reader
rafael12104

Well, the guy is a bit out there. But you don’t have to worry about rule 34 in terms of this game. There is no innuendo or winks to that type of thing because, and here is the funny part, she is an android. Not a spoiler either, you pretty much know that right from the start of the game.

I do recommend the game if you have time. I’m playing the PC version with and xbox controller and man it is fun. The story is deep. It makes you think. And the game play is superb.

One other thing, as a dev you might find this interesting. His story is also a commentary on games and game development. In the game itself you begin to question why you are killing mobs and the dialogue even questions to the repetitiveness of this type of game play. He even has a dev character in the game that is creating a game and gives you a quest to kill mobs to help him out. LOL. The subtle stuff like that is priceless.

i hear it’s very good but i can’t do singleplayer games anymore. best i’ve done in the past odd many years is 30 hours in skyrim, less than 10 in fo4 and a handful in stardew valley.

i just can’t eeven anymore with sp games QQ XD

Reader
rafael12104

Yeah, I understand. Not my mainstay but I do play them on occasion, and only if I know it is something I will like.

But this dev.. he is something. He created 26 endings for this game. 5 are real endings, but the rest are joke endings. If you decide, for example, to take a header off of a high rise building just to see your body splatter, he rolls the credits at fast forward and then tells you that humanity is dead because
you decided to try and learn to fly.

So, Warhammer 40k: Eternal Crusade. I’m 66 hours of play into this game now. I realllly want to like this game but it is making it pretty hard for me to do so. It’s not that the game is bad, it’s just that so many of its basic parts are cludgy and in need of attention. I end up playing until my frustration bar tops out then move on to something else for awhile. Which is unfortunate, because when it is fun it is very fun.

Might do some more Caves of Qud, which I picked up a couple weeks ago and have been playing intermittently. Might possibly pick up Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds. I’ve watched a few videos of play and it looks pretty engaging.

I wasn’t an early backer nor am I some big Warhammer 40k fan or anything. So the game not meeting the initial design promises isn’t an issue for me. It does still need some refinement in many areas that typically would see any PvP/shooter game panned by players if they weren’t up to snuff.

I can tell by some, uh, feedback I’ve gotten on the game’s forums that die-hard 40k fans are willing to ignore all that if they get to play dress-up in their favorite fictional universe. I’m glad the game has that core of players to keep it going but it wouldn’t take too much work to make the game an actual good PvP game either. I just hope the devs realize that and not just ignore the problems that the players still left playing are willing to ignore.

i get the vague impression that it’s somewhat improved from it’s initial release state.

Yeah, I haven’t played any of the other Warhammer games. It helps that I’m not an RTS fan and many of the Warhammer games are RTS, or single-player which I rarely play.

As for Games Workshop, I’m trying to start a rumor that Disney is going to buy them out. :P

deekay_plus

deekay_plus

the first dawn of war game was my legit introduction to teh franchise after seeing hello kitty versions of the figs for years online and not really knowing what it was. and it was a pretty good rts back then too. tho i don’t care for rts games anymore.

there’s actually just unending flood of all kidnsof different warhammer games in different genres. which ofc my warhammer fan buddies love to link news and trailers about them in irc.

disney buying WSG might actually imrpove things and make the tabletop part of it more welcoming. around 2009 or 10 i had buddy who used to play explain the whole set up and why it’s so hard to get into and basically they’ve got this thing they enforce where stores won’t allow you to play with unpainted figs or else they lose their license. which means you either paint them yourself or pay someone else to. which there’s a whole set of rules around the painting as well. on top of the figs being quite expensive per unit in themselves.

there are sort of similarish star trek and star wars games that use ready to play figs that are cheaper per pack with less convoluted rules and no expectation to memorize tonnes of tables before ever playing that seem more appetizing for that sort of thing. but then the times i’ve been to the local nerd shop i’ve been kind ofoff put in a odd way at the people that play there not to mention it’s too far to walk from here as it’s on the outskirts of my town. lol.

All of my miniatures play has been pretty small-scale, such as while playing DnD or with various board games. I was never enamored enough with miniatures wargaming to invest in it.

I feel you on the local nerd shop thing. There are few I’ve been to that aren’t reflections of the more depressing aspects of geek social issues.

deekay_plus

just a different teir of nerdy to me. they don’t seem like bad people and the shop is mostly run by this small mousey woman. but she defintely was kidn of that nerd elitism when i was askign her questions about magic the gathering stuff one time i was there.

i half mean to go back (it’s been years now) and see what their comic collections are like but i seem to recall that warhammer and mtg stuff was the most prominent stuff in teh store. i guess i could look at their janky 90s geocities style website again to get an idea before i spend the time traveling there lol.

and yeah dnd people don’t care if your minis are painted. i think this is really just weird warhammer thing that doesn’t apply to anything else i could think of. and like i said there was the star trek and star wars ships games that the figs are all ready to go (and actually quite nice ship models tho a bit small for my collecting tastes for what i want from star trek, but star trek merch is a frustrating topic in itself.)

I’m playing Ranked Matches in SFV. Just hit Ultra Silver. Close to my goal of Gold. I’ll be grinding away on my DK in BDO too. I picked up Endless Space for a buck and some change last week too. may play a bit of that while afk training some horses in BDO.

Having completed my first run through ME:Andromeda as female Ryder Infiltrator I shall be continuing my second playthrough as a female Ryder Biotic with an eye on Suvi this time round.

Also have a new game of Civ 6 ojust started with the two new factions Alexander etc..to play through.

And levelling some more Heroes on MCUO ofc.

Was planning to spend more time in SWTOR but the War on Iokath turned out to be a monumental lemon so im giving that a miss, very disappointing.

Wait what is this doing here now at what is 2pm for me I am all confused and my day has been thrown entirely out of whack

*deep breaths*

On a whim this morning I loaded up No Man’s Sky to take another peek at it and to my surprise it wasn’t horrible. The game seems to be running better and I have been kind of enjoying myself with it so far. I have even thrown some mods at it to add a bit of the sparkly stuff in. Not sure how long I will play for or how intensely but its been fun to poke at again.

I expect I will continue my Elite:Dangerous adventures which for the weekend will probably involve doing the trade related community task. Its a nice easy relaxing trade hauling run until you hit the delivery system where so far I just can’t get through without being attacked. Makes it feel like you are really running a proper blockade and keeps things exciting.

Hope everyone has a safe and fun gaming weekend. o/

I’ve been considering giving No Man’s Sky another shot now that it has had some content updates. I might check out some mods as well. Though I was ultimately disappointed in NMS, there were times when everything clicked and it delivered a chill, relaxing time.
I’ve also been meaning to play more Elite: Dangerous, too. I love the game a lot, though I guess I’m still technically in the “trying to get my foot in the door” stage as I learn everything.
