Darkfall Rise of Agon is live today

Hardcore sandbox Darkfall: Rise of Agon officially launches this afternoon. The story of the game is a victorious one, as it’s one of two games being built by player-organized studios out of the ashes of Aventurine’s original Darkfall, which vanished without much of a goodbye just about a year ago. But don’t take our word for it: The Big Picture Games team has a 13-minute video out today taking gamers through the history of its development.

In conjunction with the launch, the Rise of Agon team joined up with OriginPC for a rather large giveaway for this type of indie game:

“We’re giving 1 fan a grand prize of an ORIGIN PC CHRONOS gaming desktop valued at $2,400, featuring an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti, 30 Days of Game Time in Darkfall: Rise of Agon, and a $50 Domino’s Gift Card! 2nd and 3rd place winners will receive 30 Days of Gametime in Darkfall: Rise of Agon, and a $25 Domino’s Gift Card! Seven runner-up winners will receive 30 Days of Gametime in Darkfall: Rise of Agon!”

The giveaway ends on May 18th, so go enter!

I gotta say, that is a cool video. I love to see people this passionate about their MMORPG.

For those that have some vague intention of trying one of the DarkFalls: this one is the most purely PvP-arena game, with easy leveling to max and easy travel to arrive at brewing fights.

The other one, New Dawn, will be the most sandboxy, as it boasts uniquely localised banking, more specialised crafting careers, and only barebones traveling to will ensure that the game world is compartmentalised and that you can try to make a name for yourself in your own region or become a traveling salesman / highway robber.

very helpful info, thanks!
Guess I’ll rather check out new dawn, then.

So I’m a little confused how there can be two versions relaunching. Thanks to your post I understand the difference between the two, but how did that come to fruition?

Basically the original devs of darkfall agreed to sell its code. But there were different view points of how the game should have gone. So 2 different groups bought it and are doing their own versions.

Does it have sub?
ps/ kinda sad to know that those passionate fans will have to deal with the fact that Darkfall will stay deserted even after relaunch

Splitting DF’s small yet passionate fanbase up into two camps is going to make it tough for either to succeed. I played beta for this version. It’s not bad. As Cista2bpo stated, this version is a lot like an arena version of DF. I don’t mind paying for DF again but I think I’ll likely go with New Dawn.

Appears its P2P. 10$/mo, no trial. Ouch

Wish them the best. I imagine they’ll get a ton of players for the nostalgia factor, but I wonder what’s going to keep players around that the original and Unholy Wars did not.

Any good? This was the first I heard the old one shut down. Those adventurine guys were pretty pig headed so not surprised.
