The Daily Grind: Are you willing to reroll for Secret World Legends?

“I can’t help but think that I’d rather see a single-player adaptation of The Secret World than to lose it forever if Funcom truly does collapse,” MOP’s Justin Olivetti wrote way back in 2015, when the studio was dealing with financial turmoil. Little did he know that eventually The Secret World MMORPG would be turned upside down and rebooted as Secret World Legends. It’s not a single-player title, but it’s arguably a bit less an MMORPG than it used to be, to the point that even Funcom is hedging its bets by calling it a “shared world action RPG” (but also not admitting it has given up on MMORPGs).

Immediately after the announcement in March, almost half of the readers we polled said they were former TSW players who’d try the reboot come relaunch. But since then, we’ve learned much more about what’s coming for the game, including the sobering reality that TSW players won’t get to keep their characters and will instead have to reroll, in spite of the fact that the studio told us it “could have made [character ports from TSW] work given enough resources and time.”

And that brings me back to Justin, who earlier this week questioned whether he has the energy to do it all again — to start from scratch in a gameworld he already knows by heart. “I’m sure for some, it’s a dealbreaker,” he says, sorting through his anxiety, excitement, and frustration. How about you? Now that you know more about what TSW’s relaunch entails, are you still planning on coming back, even though you’ll have to start anew?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Undecided. If the game is REALLY sweet… maybe. I have lots of doubts about TSWL though…

Reader
Tithian

I will be rerolling, it’s a good chance to see what other factions have to offer.

Reader

I’ll reroll, but I doubt I’ll have the energy to go very far, at least not all at once. TSW is a slow burn anyway…

Reader
strangesands

I’ll reroll.

You can still play the old Secret World. I’m liking the idea of totally wiping the slate clean and starting anew. The Aegis System in the old game killed it for me, I’ve heard that FC have totally revamped it, along with much of the other dull stuff that ruined the game. I have some friends that have never played the old game, but wanting to give this revamp a go, that can only be a good thing!

See you ya’ll in June!

I don’t mind starting over too much. It rankles, certainly, & I really wish more could be carried over, but I don’t mind starting my character anew. I’m an altaholic in most games, however, so I’m used to starting from more-or-less scratch, even though I’ve only done that twice in TSW. So, yeah, I’ll give it a fair shot, & then see if I can stand the action combat (NOT typically my cup of tea).

Reader
Jack Pipsam

I mean it’s free, so I guess I’ll give it a shot out of sheer interest.

Will make a character and get whatever they promised TSW GMs. I will not level up the character until Funcom actually makes a season 2. In the meantime I will stay in TSW.

Yes. Now, stick around to spend money? Dunno.

What a coincidence because I am considering, with some hesitation, on rerolling my main on SWTOR. I plan to make different choices in the story and to play differently; taking my time to do planet storylines and and crafting. So I am giving a lot of thought to the question “What is it about my main that makes it irreplaceable?”. Aside from time invested, nothing. Everything else can be replaced by just playing the game, which is what I want, I want to keep playing SWTOR. For example, my epic gear I obtained from that command system which I obtained by just playing the game. Also my cosmetic items I paid for with credits or cartel coins which both come from time playing or time subscribed.

In the end, if this reroll works out and I play it for longer than my original character then I consider it a win.

Reader
Martinez

Sure! I haven’t played in months

I’ll play it because I want to see season 2 content, but make no mistake, I’m pissed that I have to re-do content again. Especially in a game where half the fun is figuring out the “solutions” to the missions… that I now already know the answers to. So… far less fun and far more grind. I am a Grand Master and I would be hard pressed to pay any more to them given the treatment.

Reader
Sajiri

Well I never got that far in it anyway so of course I will. I always wanted to play it more but just had too many things going on at once that I just never really got around to it. I recall that I was playing blade/chaos, but I had just decided it was too boring and I think I’d been messing around with elemental/pistol which I had a lot more fun with, so maybe I’ll go straight for that one this time.

Reader

I only ever alted through secret worlds anyway but Yeh totally. Sounds cool

If you want your Season 2 and on content, it seems like you will have to just deal with it. If you don’t play/support Legends then both games will likely only exist in maintenance mode until they aren’t worth keeping online.

I bounced off TSW dozens of times, so I don’t expect Legends to be a game changer. I hope it works out for enough people to keep the story content rolling in for long-time players though.

Yes, absolutely. Really looking forward to going thru the game again with that “new MMO” buzz. There are very few opportunities to go thru a game you love like it was launch day again.

Reader
Serrenity

I’ll probably try it. I only made it to Egypt and that over the course of many many months so I don’t remember most of the storyline — it’ll be some what newish to me.

I’m still sad at the loss of the MMO. True the game was always better suited to something hybrid than a full fledged MMO but the universe has a TON of amazing potential for future MMOs. I just don’t think that will materialize at this point

Reader
Ashfyn Ninegold

I’ve always had zero interest in TSW. Nothing at all about it intrigued me. However, this interesting “group RPG” might be worth a look. But, I’ll still wait for reviews.

Reader
Armsbend

I’m looking forward to a reroll not the opposite. I only played the Dragon faction and I just went full grind until I maxed a dps character. It has been years since I’ve taken the game out for a spin so I’ll look forward to started a new (dirty) Illuminati.

Yep. Simultaneously kinda bummed to lose progress on my character and pretty excited to start a fresh one to be able to play through the game with others, but my excitement slightly outweighs the bummed part so here I am.

Considering I never made it very far with every prior attempt to get into the game, starting over isnt that big of a deal for me. I think the farthest I got in the game was the beginning of blue mountains.

Right now I’m thinking of simply sticking with TSW. I’m still working through Tokyo so I’m pretty far along in the story but not finished. That’s my biggest sticking point. I don’t want to restart 3/4 of the way through the story, that will just irritate me. Once I reach the end then maybe I’ll think about SWL but not until then.

You don’t just restart your book from page 1 once you get near the end.

I never got to deep into this game. I just didn’t care for how questing was done and hated the combat. Any game that wants you to do google search for answers loses me quick. I would ask for quest help in chat and be told to look it up online. The idea of the game world was amazing and made me wish that another company created the game because Funcom is just a crappy game company to me now. Funcom does create amazing game worlds its just to bad they suck at everything else.

Reader

I’ll re-roll, no problem.

First – I want to call them on statement they added to the story. If they did not I’ll tell everyone about it. :D If they did I don’t want to miss a single bit of it. Second – I want to experience story again. It was two years since I finished my playthrough up to Tokyo and while I remember a lot of it firmly I’d like to do it all over again.

But that’s just me. Most people not interested – and that’s TSW crowd, not big at all – and I think SWL won’t be much of a success. Cutting character customization options? Are you kidding me? It was poor as it is! Also combat system everyone ‘love’ so much… What I saw on livestreams are not that promising. It’s new, but not sure it is better. And I am a fan of this game.

We’ll see, of course. But so far…

Reader
Azazel Zel

There’s the fresh blood, and after not playing this game for nearly 3 years, it will feel fresh again, minus all the trash that ruined.

Reader
Roger Melly

Nothing to lose by re-rolling after that whether I stay or not depends on how much they have dumbed the game down . TSW is not something I would want to play if it is too casual an experience .

Reader
Ben Stone

Not unless they fix the horrible combat animations.

vikaernes

I was really interested, and didn’t mind re-rolling at all, that is until dev streams made it clear that character customization (what limited customization TSW had) was being stripped out in favor of simple, ugly face presets. I’m out, I won’t touch this game with a ten foot pole. I’ll be patiently waiting for Wild West Online.

Reader
Manastu Utakata

I am going to turn my answer on its pigtails: I rather play TSW first (if I still can) before ever trying SWL. If I decide then that after playing TSW, I want to poke at SWL…then I’ll have no choice but to reroll my characters there, unless Funcom decides to change their policies about that.

Reader
Koshelkin

That makes no sense, just try SWL. It’s TSW with improved combat and a new skill and level system. You won’t miss out on anything if you don’t play TSW.

Reader
Manastu Utakata

It makes sense when using the analogy of pre-NGE vs. post NGE. I believe the change of focus Secret World has changed the spirit in which it was made. But this is my offhand opinion on the matter. /shrug

Reader
Koshelkin

Not sure how you can draw a comparison without having played either version.

Reader
Manastu Utakata

This is why said, “In my opinion”. Which is why would like to of tried the original game first. :)

Reader
Hirku

If you don’t already have a TSW account or can’t find a key on the secondhand/grey market, then you’re out of luck. TSW is no longer for sale through official sources.

Reader
Manastu Utakata

Then I won’t be playing SWL at all then, lol.

Reader
Hirku

But…but you’re a brand new fresh-faced player! And the game has a reticle now!
A RETICLE!

Reader
Pandalulz

Mana likes Tera though, and the new combat is closer to that than before so it should work out I would think. Although I haven’t watched any beta gameplay, so I’m only assuming the new combat is more interesting than builderbuilderbuilderspenderrepeat like the old system.

Reader
Manastu Utakata

I wouldn’t buy this game for the combat though, but for the mystery. Which is a unique model in all things MMO. I am now wholly regretting of not picking up that box version I saw on sale at electronics goods box store on the way from a dental some years ago. /sigh

Reader
Pandalulz

Agree. It’s definitely what the game has going for it. I think I might have an extra code somewhere due to buying a base version and then complete version later on (I don’t know where I have it at, will have to look), although I still never really made it very far in the game. I’m hoping the combat update makes playing the actual game more palatable, because while the game may not sell based on its combat being oh so good, the original combat was a pretty active turnoff for a lot of people (I could deal with it, but boy was it spammy).
Personally, I feel like having less people running around the zones will actually increase the atmosphere of the thing and make the game better, accentuating what it’s good at. When you’re in the middle of a zombie invasion and somebody runs by wearing a mankini, spamming crazy particle effects, it kind of kills that mood.
EDIT: Hmmm, I found it, not sure what the best way to PM you would be though.

Reader
Manastu Utakata

Thanks for sharing that.

Email or by BNet account. Though I would have to publically display either of those here, which I am not comfortable with. My only suggestion would be if you play WoW or TERA…I can tell you what character I’ll be on, we can arrange to hook up from there.

Then there is the question what I do with it, once I have it. If TSW is only open to previous account holders, there would be no way I could plug that in.

But if it all works out in the end, then thanks very much in advance. :)

Oh no, I’m a complete idiot. It’s been so long since I’ve added somebody who wasn’t a RealID friend, I forgot all about the number. Apparently it’s EpochAWOL#11171

Rerolling doesn’t bother me since I remember just getting past the school’s flesh golem part, but I probably won’t be playing because I enjoy MMOs and dropped this game the second GW2 came out so the same game with cut features and defaulting to a clunky “action” camera that of which I’m pretty sure was an option back at launch is not going to make me come back.

Also two of my favorite games in my favorite genre have expansions coming out. Funcom is dumb as hell for releasing this the same week as Stormblood. I’m sure they probably told themselves “But we’re not an MMO anymore!”.

If this came out last month I would have tried it out, but not when two better games (my opinion, of course) are dropping expansions that expand upon the game rather than have me treading through familiar grounds.

Otherwise, everything I know about SWL is a turn-off.

I’m more than willing, but then again, this whole situation doesn’t bother me as much as it bothers some folks. I can see why burn-out coupled with hard feelings about the reboot could keep someone from wanting to play again.

Personally, I’ve been away from TSW for a few years so I’m actually looking forward to replaying the content and seeing what else Funcom has tweaked.

Reader
Grim🎃 Darhk

the answer is probably. As long as it feels fresh, and not just tsw where I have to level all over again, sure. I’ll probably play a Templar this time, since I was Lumi in tsw. Probably find a different build, and use a different aux weapon as well.

I’m really on the fence about it. And that is far less a case of the re-roll aspect (I am an alt-o-holic) so much as it is “can I re-roll and do this all over again in a control/gameplay iteration that I’m really on the fence about” issue.

I’m willing to replay content, I’m less willing to fight against gameplay that isn’t enjoyable to me personally, and so far this doesn’t look it. Which is disappointing, but I am pulling for them to succeed whether I’m there or not.

Reader

Not worth the effort.

Reader

If the game is good, sure. I enjoyed playing through it before and unless the game sucks I don’t see any reason why I wouldn’t enjoy it again.

No issue rerolling for SWL — but then, I was already thinking about starting a new character to go through the story again, so it’s not a big deal for me.

Smoot
Reader
Smoot

Absolutely not. why would i want to re-play content that ive already played? Theres nothing new in this game, it just removed the majority of the reason people kept playing. Not even an MMO anymore.

If im going to start over, ill start over on a new game. not re-hash old content just to work to where my chacter was.

Funcom really showed there true colors with this one. After flat out lying for a year talking up the major updates that were coming, taking peoples money, and time, they pull this. A recycled game thats actually worse than the original, in exchange for a (possibly) larger audience.

No thanks. I wont just not be playing the Secret World Light, but will not be scammed into spending time on any other Funcom game ever again.

Read to re-roll, happy to do it (this is coming from a TSW player since beta)

If the choices , as customers, were to either let TSW die, or to at least give SWL a chance (even if we all don’t agree that their long-term plan for SWL is going to work) as people who love the game the choice is obvious.

Reader

Save your name, give the character a similar appearance on launch and head out. It wasn’t like we had new content to play anyway.
