Camelot Unchained implements torches (bring your own pitchforks)

City State’s Mark Jacobs is back at the helm of the Camelot Unchained weekly update this round, with news of his team’s efforts on terrain, performance improvements, seamless zone transitions, the API server, the salvaging system, siege weapons, ambient sound and music tracks, knockback animations, and the pleasantly named wounds and trauma code.

“We’re revisiting the rough first pass of the wounds and trauma code to make use of new code written while we wrapped up encumbrance. At the same time, this pass will also fix several long-standing bugs in the system, like dummies not respawning, and issues with bleeding to death. No one likes issues with bleeding to death, amiright?”

There’s also the usual assortment of images, including a super-detailed look at the work-in-progress unitframes and… torches. A whole bunch of torches. What could go wrong, right? Pitchforks next week?

The more possibilities the better. I love everything that CU is adding, more flexibility, more depth etc. Compare it so say the new western themed mmo in development where all I see is limitations and find myself sighing. So bring on the torches! :)

Idk exactly what direction the Wound system is meant to go in, but from what I’ve read and my own personal head canon it comes across as a form of hard CC. As opposed to soft CC, being short temporary effects such as poison and bleeding caused directly from skills.

Wounds on the other hand are caused by reducing a body parts HP to zero, perhaps taking damage type into account, causing different wounds depending on the majority of a damage type taken to a given area. And remain in effect until removed by a healer, healing item or death.

Crack somebody in the head with a Blunt object and you give them a Concussion, reducing cast speed and making the target prone to being interrupted when channeling or casting spells.
Burn them in the face however and you will Blind them instead, reducing their vision and shortening their effective range of skills.

I’d much prefer a CC system like this, one with depth. I’ve honestly gotten a bit sick of unconditional CC spam present in most MMORPG’s and MOBA’s. Getting locked up by a series of stuns, or riddled with a string of conditions isn’t very engaging. It’s esp a problem in games like this where there is no limit to the number of enemies you could be engaged with, which in turn causes CC to scale very poorly.

The Wound system however, if implemented correctly could end run the problem by effectively limiting how much CC any given player can be exposed to at any given time. And thus making each individual CC mean much more.
I hope this turns out to be the case.

Game’s looking great!
Is the map going to be heavily instanced or one big open world?

Open World on several servers (automatic sizeable zones) with the “seamless transition” tech for players and projectiles, so you won’t even notice that you switch to a different zone/server on a different machine. The zones can be scaled up or down depending on player activity so they can save money.

Hehe, we have to give you folks more interesting things to talk about!

As to tempting fate DK, kinda my thing if you look at my track record. OTOH, I still haven’t worked up the courage to jump out of a perfectly good aircraft. :)
