Elder Scrolls Online’s Morrowind is finally here! Watch the new launch trailer

The Elder Scrolls Online’s Morrowind not-an-expansion has formally launched today for PC and even on console, where those of you who couldn’t participate in the head start have surely been patiently waiting.

ZeniMax’s Matt Firor has thanked players, especially beta testers. “This new Chapter in The Elder Scrolls Online saga brings more than just a new, open world to explore,” he writes in today’s producer’s letter. “We are introducing the Warden (the game’s first brand-new class since launch), a brand new PvP game mode with Battlegrounds, and a new, challenging Trial with the Halls of Fabrication. As I have said many times, ESO is designed to give players the freedom to play the way that they want to play. We began building this experience by removing the barriers to exploration in the One Tamriel update last year, and we’ve further built upon that concept in ESO: Morrowind, which features PvE, PvP, and even solo-focused content.”

There’s also a tease in there for future content and E3. “The world of Tamriel is only going to get bigger,” he says.

We’ve got the new trailer, our pre-launch streams, and a full roundup of all our Morrowind content to date down below. Read quickly, Outlander, or go away!

Less than a quarter of our poll respondents a few weeks ago said they were in the head start, with another fifth saying they would play later and a solid half saying they either weren’t playing or were undecided. How do we stand now?

Are you playing ESO Morrowind? (Official launch version)

  • I was in the head start or will begin today (51%, 107 Votes)
  • I am not playing Morrowind yet or I am still undecided (28%, 59 Votes)
  • I will not be buying or returning to the game at all (15%, 32 Votes)
  • No response / view poll (6%, 12 Votes)

I’m trying to decide whether to give this a shot. I never played the original ESO. Is Morrowind a stand alone game? Expansion? Can I just buy it and start playing? Thanks for any help

I am not playing ESO:M but I have the base game (no DLC) and I am not intending on leaving it behind, so maybe, uh, I’ll get to Morrowind (and possibly a separate character to start in it) in 2018…2019…. :P

Reader

played the beta and that was reassurance to not buy it. Morrowind is nothing more than dlc sold with an underwhelming warden class and broken battlegrounds that are disappointing and poorly implemented. They compared “chapters” to other mmo expansions and that couldn’t be farther from the truth. They used the morrowind nostalgia and cashed in.

Morrowind has the same amount of content in it that orsinium did when I got that for subbing with my eso plus membership. They even tried to throw eso plus members a bone and give them more bank space to compensate for them screwing their loyal playerbase. I have supported this game since the beginning and will no longer be giving them any money. If you like a story that you can casually finish within 2 days and a pretty zone to look at that’s about all you will get out of morrowind.

Already finished the Morrowind story line and all of the side quests I came across. Very satisfying. Rolled a new Dark Elf Warden for it and ended up level 20 when my quest log emptied. Now I’m back in the main world running quests I never ran before, since my other characters started off on the west coast before the One Tamriel update.

I have to admit that I didn’t like them calling me Outlander all the time, even though I was a Dark Elf. I guess that’s pretty minor given how much it would affect voice-overs if they wanted to change that for such a small percentage of the population.

Anyway, I think it was well worth playing. Still have a bunch of achievements to finish up there as well.

Ordered and already playing, having a great time so far, but no plans to use a Warden just yet. Question for people though: was there supposed to be a skill reset? I got a pop-up saying there was but all my points were still allocated. Any ideas?

Since Beta, I’ve been dungeoning with my warden and it’s been great.
I mean, I will not abandon my templar that will remain my main character as a PvE/PvP healer but the warden is really a fun class to play.

I LOVE “jack-of-all-trades” classes… Reminds me of my bard on EverQuest.

ESO is one of the few MMOs on the market that has progressively gotten better over time. Usually it’s the other way around with MMOs.

I’ve been playing early release. The storylines in Morrowind are riveting, and I found myself unable to log out because I wanted to know a story’s end before bedtime. It was like reading a good book. xD

Reader

I preordered when the xpac was first announced, but I haven’t logged in yet. I’m not quite sure why, but I think it’s in large part the very numerous and loud voices proclaiming just how underwhelming the Warden is, both STA and Mag. Shame, really.

Good expansion for a good game.

Also, my Templar has no sustain problems at all, so I dunno why people were pissing and moaning about that.

What kind of content do you face with your Templar?

I have not noticed major changes when I pvp however in pve I’ve experienced some troubles.

Pre ordered the basic digital upgrade on PC, and I’m having a blast! Though, the first thing I did was make a warden and immediately jump back into vanilla content because I’m a pedant that wants to take my character through the original story xD.

I did one or two quests in Vvardenfel, but none of the main storyline, and I’m reminded again of how much I love the quests in this game :D either way I’m enjoying myself :D

Same here! I loved the boatsman’s remark as I asked him to take me to Vvardenfel. ‘No idea why anyone would want to do that, but oh well’ or something along those lines.

The game does have some good, and often funny, NPC dialogue.

One of my favorites, delivered in a deadpan only an Argonian could achieve: “I’m so glad I could save all these lives. And all these coins, as well. These poor, innocent coins. I will protect them.”

Got the pre order. Been playing and having a blast! Love my bear pet. I named him Zonk. When my bear battles the baddies I chant…

“Eat it Zonk. Eat it Zonk.”

Good bear.

I only got the basic digital upgrade and I will be playing it at some point only not right now. I am more invested in other games at the moment and it is not like ESO is going anywhere so there is no rush to get into it, it will still be there when I am ready for it.

This has been regurgitated before on numerous occasions, but the game has gone a very long way since beta. Not trying to make you change your mind, just think it’s unfair to judge a game based on beta experience from 3 years ago.

Reader
Peter Reynolds

I didn’t mean original beta I meant the Morrowind beta.

Reader
Loopy

Yeah sorry misread that. That’s fair. I don’t think much has changed since then. I’m personally not picking up Morrowind because there is so much that i haven’t seen in the game. It doesn’t feel like a must for me at this point.

I came back with the housing patch, absolutely nothing has changed.

But maybe this time I’ll get another answer than “u no liek u no play” about all those mythical changes?

Reader
Loopy

Well, to be fair, nobody really owes you an explanation. It’s not our job nor responsibility to make you like the game. You either like it or you don’t.

Line
Reader
Line

Exactly what I said.

Zealots proclaiming that everything changed, and defend their bullshit by “you don’t have to like the game”. Kudos for not telling me to turn to google for the changes, at least.

But anyway:
UI? Still shit.
Rewards? Still shit. Depending on how you like scaling it could be worse but that’s not bad in my books. Just random filler for every single action in the game.
Items? Still crazy loot tables making, again, everything pointless RNG including stealing. Just grind until you get the right items (or the couple that are worth the most).
Dungeons? Still just as meh. Not the worst, just boring, again.
Class design? Still a mess, and balance has been trash since release. Still is.
Sound design? Lol what is sound? Just rehash some Jeremy Soule, you don’t need to lsiten to a game.
Visuals? Textures and effects are fine. Characters are monsters, animations are sloppy at best, combat looks (and sounds) like pig fat.
Auction house? Oh boy, talk about a mess.
PVP? Still laggy.
Animation cancelling ruining pretty much everything? Not a bug anymore, but a feature. helps a lot with the combat feedback with characters freaking out in super fast motion…
LFG tool? Still broken. It also happens to make their new BG a complete mess.

But hey, as we hear all the time: everything changed.
You know, like… there are less broken quests, I guess.
Totes different now, pls buy.

Fan Sites normally frown on such potent narratives. The problem is, pulling through a malaise of what you posted would require someone who is just as zealous in favor of the game.

ESO is a good MMO, Ive derided the company ZOS in many posts but the game on the whole is solid. You have some valid points although I find your articulation less than pleasing.

I disagree with your assessment of the visuals though. I think ESO in high def is pretty spectacular. On some of your other points (class balance, RNG, and LFG) they need improvement for sure. I dont log into ESO as much as I used too. Twice a week, last sat night I went out on PV Vivec cp campaign. 38 person queue, grhatwood was full of people, zone chat was flooded with “need tank” messages.

All this with morrowind out on PC (didnt get, wont get). Whatever they are doing, its working.

Reader
Loopy

I’m assuming you’re expecting me to dance with you? Waiting for somebody to come in and refute all of your points, after which you will either dismiss them or introduce expanded version of them?

Like i said, i won’t be put on defensive just because i like a game. I also won’t pretend that the game is without issues. I am completely willing to go past those issues and enjoy what the game has to offer. If you’re not, then i see no reason why continue spouting the same narrative. Move on and find a game that fits your needs.

Nobody here makes money by telling people they like a game. We like a game, and we would like other to like it. It’s human nature. You can continue putting labels on people who defend a game, but ultimately they will continue having fun in said game while you continue ranting. So who is really the zealot?

I pre-ordered the Limited Edition for Xbox One, but the estimated postal delivery is Friday unfortunately.
Still I am pretty keen and will be glad once it gets to my place. I will be interested to see how it works with the disc, hopefully it will all be on there and I won’t have a massive download after (if there is no disc I’ll be sad).
I wonder if I need to keep using the base game disc to play or the Morrowind disc… soon will know though.

Reader

Glad they did the little preview period to show off the kinds of issues we’d expect ZOS to have so I could just side step this one entirely.

Reader
Don Nascimento

Way to have an open mind! It is currently the best MMO on the market. May I ask what you’re playing now?

Reader
Arktouros

Wow looking at the comments below glad I waited till after lunch to come back to check. Probably woulda engaged in you and got tangled up with the crazy. Yikes. RIP @Lights and Music for taking one for the team on this one.

Reader
Don Nascimento

And yet he did all the baiting, name calling, and ALL CAPS.. But of course I am the crazy one. Why? Because you would have taken the side against ESO. Look at everything below objectively.

Reader
Arktouros

You’re the crazy one because you’re taking the stance of games being better or worse than other games when they simply are entertainment products that people will enjoy or not enjoy for various reasons. There’s no inherent competition there but you seem intent on trying to create one. What’s crazy about that is there is no goal or objective in mind with your reply other than to fight and argue. You’re not going to convince me whatever game I play is bad while I’m enjoying myself nor would I ever be able to convince you ESO is bad for the reasons I didn’t enjoy it. So there’s nothing to be gained from it, no greater understanding or collective achievement just bitter arguing and nitpicking over details which is just plain nuts.

Reader
Don Nascimento

Takes two to argue. Considering he baited me calling me a fanboy, then resorted in name calling.

AND, after all that look below, I said I was sorry 5 minutes ago.

wow….

Reader
Arktouros

I mean I don’t really expect you to see the crazy man, that’s part of the crazy :)

But it’s okay. You apologized! I mean it was clearly the other guy’s fault 100% entirely, but you were the bigger person and apologized. But real talk though it was all that other guy. His problem. Yep, you said you were sorry.

Reader

probably not a very defensible one either

Another thing, the only real gauge we have is a full collection of public opinion. We can’t really go by subs because as you know the most popular is not always the best. So we have to go by best “rated”.

As you can see here this site has all MMOs listed by public rating:

http://www.mmorpg.com/games-list/show/all/sCol/rankHype/sOrder/desc

Some things to note:

While I will agree that FFXIV and Guild Wars 2 rank higher than Elder Scrolls Online, judging by the score I would hardly call my claim indefensible, especially considering the rocky start ESO had. FFXIV has a rocky start but they shut it all down and re-branded the whole thing. So their score really does not reflect that. I wonder if they would have been lower if they keep going with the original release and just made changes like ESO did.

Even with that, you can’t really go by the past. You have to go with several factors. Buzz, player activity, forum activity, there are many things.

I will end it with this.

Saying ESO is not even close to the top MMOs out there is lot less defensible than saying ESO is close to the top or is the top.

How about this, I wont say it is the best, as long as you dont say it isn’t even close to the best.

There are numbers and facts that prove my case.

Reader
Don Nascimento

Wait, so you make a list and I can’t reply shooting those games down? “Few people to make that claim?”

ESO has won multiple best MMO awards from several sites including readers choice sites like mmorpg.com, a site which has a pretty strict following of fans who expect a lot out of an MMO. “Few people?”

ESO had a medeorce start there’s no doubting that. But the housing is fantastic, the gameplay is great, the thievery system is top notch. The game is beautiful and feels more open, then a lot of loading zone based MMOs. Espeically Final Fantasy, which has invisible walls and tiny, tiny, zones.

May people will say somewhere in the top 5 are Elder Scrolls Online, World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2 and Final Fantasy XIV. People have their preferences. I have loved and will always love WoW. I love Guild Wars 2 as well.

I think ESO is the best right now. You do not. I think the fact that you even bothered to throw in Black Desert is an absolute joke, but who am I? You do get credit for Runescape though, because I love oldschool stuff like Ultima Online.

I have an opinion, you have an opinion. Nothing we write here are facts…

Inb4 some text wall

Followed immediately by 2 solid text walls. Right on cue. As @Loopy stated above to another poster:

You know why you didn’t quote the whole thing? Because I not only did not spend much time saying your games are bad, but I actually provided evidence that I am NOT one of the few to make the claim about how good ESO is.

I proved you wrong, now you sit out the dance.

Hardly. I (and I’m sure everyone else in this thread) accurately predicted exactly how you would respond to someone answering your obviously intentionally loaded question…and now here we are. If I bother to take the time and go through your haphazard response line by line, you’re either going to dismiss my responses or introduce an expanded version your original ideas in an effort to shape them to fit the argument.

Just take a look at your responses thus far

Reader
Don Nascimento

So your still dancing I see? lol

My biggest issue with people like you is that the fail to take a step back, take a look in the mirror and see what really happened.

I will go first. I spent a little too much time making my case, and it was a wall of text. Now your turn…

Ask yourself, who initially turned up the volume in this thread? It certainly was not me. All I did was say “Name a better MMO”. There was no bait there. It was a simple question.

If your only reply was “WoW, FFXIV, Black Desert, freaking Runescape” and nothing else, then we could have had a discussion that collectively had some constructive elements to it. As I said, I respect Runescape, and love WoW. I dislike FFXIV and Black Desert but that is mostly because I dont care for Asian MMOs (gender locked classes, grinding, fighting in high heels, etc).

But you had to be a smart ass internet troll and say “Inb4 some text wall fanboy list of ‘THESE GAMES ARE BAD BECAUSE A,B,C AND MY FAVORITE GAME IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST DESPITE ME BEING ONE OF THE FEW PEOPLE TO MAKE THAT CLAIM”. Now, what do you think is going to happen? What did you think would happen?

What kind of a response did you think you would get? Of course it would be negative.

Lights and Music

Dude, legit question, are you okay?

Take a scroll back through your posts, look how long they are and how borderline unstable you sound in them.

You asked a very simple (and clearly loaded) question:

NAME A BETTER MMO

So I gave you a commensurate answer, and (correctly) predicted the type of response I would receive. You then proceed to write several pages worth of text, to the point that it won’t even fit on a single screen, some of which you admit disproves your own points, and then you claim you aren’t making the exact literal claim that started the discussion :

ESO is the best MMO on the market

I am NOT one of the few to make the claim about how good ESO is.

You respond to everything almost immediately with rant-y replies which contradict your earlier statements and honestly are just all over the place… Are you O.K. over there?

Reader
Don Nascimento

Did you even bother reading my last response? Wow, someone needs some help. It is all about attitude and ALL CAPS. I explained why I responded the way I did, because you responded in all caps and called me a fanboy. Can you not see how that would frustrate someone?

Now you are quoting me but leaving out the important parts. Parts where I said I would stop calling it the best and call it one of the best. So you leave things like this out and then question my sanity by back-quoting me when i said it was the best and comparing it to something I said AFTER I said I would stop calling it the best! Out of context and very political of you!

You okay, over there? Should I call someone?
