E3 2017: ARK Survival Evolved launches August 8

The time is fast approaching when we can stop cocking eyebrows at ARK: Survival Evolved for launching expansions while still in early access as the game will indeed be launching this summer as promised, and now we have a date: August 8th for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. The Xbox One X version will apparently be a launch product for the newly announced platform, landing on November 7th.

Studio Wildcard will offer its usual array of digital versions, plus a $60 box, a $100 edition bundled with a season pass and three expansions (Scorched Earth and two more unannounced expansions, the first of which arrives later this year), and finally the $160 collector box for those who just have to have the cloth map and soundtrack.

Wildcard is also hyping Ragnarok, one of the fan mods developed thanks to ARK’s burgeoning sponsored mods program. Trailers for all the new bits are down below!

Well, it’s about time. But now the question is whether they’ll actually achieve release-worthy levels of polish by then.

All these guys are doing is pushing out a turd. You think they are going to fix all the lag and other performance issues? They would have done that long ago.

Well there’s no point actually optimizing it now then, because the end of early access is when everyone moves on to the next survival sandbox, amirite?

I’m getting old and bitter. So, this doesn’t even get a nod from me. Why? Because, my guess is that the game will launch with almost all the known issues and poorly optimized for the PC. It is a guess, but a pretty damn good one based on what the priorities have been over the past year.

BTW Xbox One X is a stupid name.

Now, you kids best not step on my grass. I’ll get real angry if you do.

What I am concerned with is whether or not the two “unannounced” expansions will be from mods that are currently free. At least ragnarok mod being official they’re not going to charge for and hopefully it is an indication that the dlc’s they’re planning to charge for will be actually content WC has made.

As for their price raising, given the price has been much much less and on sale points on steam in the 10 buck range for the last 3 or so sales, the fact that the future expansions will be under a separate season pass paywall and that the aforementioned ragnarok is formerly a mod, I really don’t see this being justifiable value added thinking to justify the hefty hike for those who have not gotten the game previously. Really this seems to be(and with some of the recent ui changes etc, a focus on the console market, especially since they’re going to be on the New Xbox.

the expansions are free the only thing not free is that extra stuff like the book and the map

Scorched Earth dlc isn’t free. Future “dlc/expansions” will be behind a seasons pass that they’ve cited(and yet to be stated the cost).

Where do you see anything about the expansions being free? The mention of a “Season Pass” that includes expansions seems to indicate they will be charging for them just like Scorched Earth.

Finally. Finally we can end the ridiculous justification that those shitty game decisions and those shitty bugs they never address are all just part of the “early access” process.

And there was a shock across the gaming universe following this announcement… :P

No hell didn’t freeze over. Its just going to still be on going well after they launch (and if they launch at their supposed date). If they do “official launch” then, I am 100% sure all the myriad of issues will not have been addressed and just will be kited over.

Right now it is just a cold front moving in. Final weather report may depend on how much of the above ends up being true. ;)

(As a historical point of reference, Primal Survival was a big announcement last E3. It, too, had a fancy trailer and was supposed to be out by the end of the year. See how that one turned out.)

So now that its officially going to be “released”, can we start seeing all those performance optimizations that everyone claims “optimization is the LAST thing devs work on, so just wait until it done” ?

Fuck no … This just means they are going to abandon all support for the game and focus on whatever title theu ha e next.

Expansions. Expansions everywhere.

I’m impressed, they’re actually launching it. Cool.
