Conan Exiles announces Xbox One date, Xbox One X migration, and a free expansion for all

Funcom has taken the hustle and bustle of E3 to tease a new expansion and put a date on its Xbox One Conan Exiles pre-launch. It’s coming to the Xbox One X, too, “at a later date.”

“Funcom today announced that Conan Exiles, the open-world survival game that sold half a million copies during its first month on PC, will be crushing its way into Xbox One Game Preview on August 16th 2017. The studio is also excited to announce that a free expansion update will launch on both PC and Xbox One on the same date.”

The expansion doesn’t have a name yet, but it’s clearly the long-awaited snowscape biome, and yep, it’s free: “As the game is still in Early Access, everyone who has already bought or decides to buy the game while it’s still in development will get access to this massive update at no extra charge.” Expect more in the lead-up to the simultaneous launch on August 16th.

There’s a trailer and thankfully new pics for the expansion too!

man, all they have to do is make it look/play better than ark on console = win. That market is ripe for the taking and ark plays and looks like total shit…

all.they.have.to.do…funcom…you guys listening? Look good. Play good. Relatively bug free…good.

(now back to the real world where none of the above is going to happen)

Whoever worded the press release/community announcements for the “expansion” really messed this one up.

CE’s player base is down to almost nothing according to steam tracking sites like steam charts. They’ve lost over 90% of player since they started and still dropping. I really don’t see the game fairing any better on the consoles with this announcement nor see any significant improvement on the pc.

Many people are waiting until they develop it further at this point. There are a lot of updates incoming.

Consoles are a bit more starved for this type of game. If they can polish it enough and release it with several Biomes, its going to make a killing there. It already made a killing on PC, but PC is being used as the beta platform.

That is not good, but is it really quite as bad for B2P as for old sub games? Can’t you make a business on lots of sales at first, large dropoff, then new expansion/DLC, rinse and repeat? Assuming the bumps are big and frequent enough.

Companies need to stop throwing on the word “Expansion” to something that is just a very large patch. Especially to games still in early access. Its a patch, that is adding content that was originally intended for the base game. Thats NOT an expansion.

Marketing is just calling it that because they can add “its free!” to make customers feel like they are getting special treatment.

Multiple biomes were always planned to be in the base game. At least that’s what was said at the beginning. If they tried to sell me the rest of the game I already paid for at this point I’d be looking into class-action lawsuits.

…expansion? So they just mean bringing it closer to launch? How the fuck do you have expansions for an unfinished game still in development?

As someone that works closely with marketing people, marketing people frustrate the hell out of me quite frequently -_-

OMG, how old are you? Next thing I know, you will be trying to claim perhaps you should not sell $1000 space ships for unfinished games! Madness! Since it is free, I think it just earns bemused smiles rather than the salt if they were to follow other companies and charge while still in alpha.

As someone that works closely with marketing people, marketing people frustrate the hell out of me quite frequently.

Funcom is poor; advertising is expensive. They got an article for free (insert Gamergate meme here) that had “free expansion” in the title. Remember, a lot of people, especially commenters, only read the title. I think these marketing people are more competent than the Funcom employees who greenlit LegoCrap and the ones that designed TSW.

Fucking why even bring that shit up again? Can we go back to ignoring all that stupidity? I get it’s fun to reference to try to “score points” with one side or the other, but most folks would rather both sides shut the fuck up forever about it because of how stupid that all is.

Hopefully they’ll do a good job with the One X enhancements.

Someone has made their own map that’s 3x as large but better optimized. It looks cool. Exile Island
Still waiting on climbing to get patched in before playing again, but the new biome looks good.

Looking forward to seeing a new map. I had no interest in Exiles until some friends decided to play. After dealing with situation on official servers we threw in for a private one just to mess around. The game is a nice distraction, fun if you are a fan of the Conan IP but otherwise, not really much to set it apart. There is some juvenile fun with nudity (only topless female archers, the female character having a huge contingent of completely naked men as personal guard, etc) but that is just us. I really don’t see this standing out much.

I just had a really funny flashback to that old comedy show “In Living Color” and their skit, “Men On Film”, where one of them rhapsodizes about “all them sweaty mens, showin’ their passion for one another.” (breaks up into giggles)

going to purchase my first console in a long time when the Xbox X comes out. That’s one powerful piece of hardware. It will be my reason to get a 4K television, since it will support 4K media across the board, not just games.

4K media across the board

Me too. I was thinking about getting a console just to try out. I assumed it would be the new PS4; but XBOX is going to have the UHD BR player and Sony will not. I realize I have ceded my digital life to Apple and Amazon – unlike good old paper books – my music and movies and books are hostage to A&A. But a UHD player allows me to pretend I could take back some control.

So the XbX is cheaper than many UHD players and cheaper than any nVidia card I would buy.

Conan Exiles can’t release on Xbox One X at the same time as Xbox One because the One X comes out in November. Unless there are some huge unforeseen issues with XBO to XBOX compatibility, Conan Exiles will be on XBOX on November 7th. Whether Funcom will have any enhancements for the dramatically more powerful iteration of that hardware ready for the launch is up to them.

Not trying to be a stickler about specifics here. I’m just saying there should be no “migration” to this new hardware.

β€œAs the game is still in Early Access, everyone who has already bought or decides to buy the game while it’s still in development will get access to this massive update at no extra charge.”

I’m not sure if they are implying that this “expansion” to their unfinished game is going to cost money after the “1.0” release of the base game. This is a better approach to releasing an expansion during Early Access than ARK’s with the Scorched Earth expansion, at least.

That is something you should really ask for clarification on whenever someone on staff gets a chance to talk to Funcom about Conan Exiles again. Sneaky PR people!

The new biome is a very refreshing look for a game that has thus far been (appropriately for the fiction) mostly dreadful desert with some vegetation. With is being an expansion, does this mean the snow area is going to be a separate map you travel to within a server? If they sell this after release it couldn’t be appropriately placed on the existing map without weird limitations or requiring the expansion purchase.

I have a lot of questions for a game I don’t own or plan on buying it seems.
