Secret World Legends’ headstart launches today

Pack up your stuff, The Secret World fans: It’s movin’ day, at least if you don’t care about playing on Steam, as Secret Worlds Legends’ headstart period for veteran The Secret World players and beta testers begins today.

Funcom’s said the headstart hasn’t technically begun just yet — we still don’t know when the flag will drop — but that preloading is underway. [Update: Expect it live at 2 p.m. EDT per Funcom’s latest tweet nope, live at 4 p.m. EDT per Funcom’s latest-latest tweet.]

The studio outlined its legacy transfer system last night; your accounts should already be linked (don’t go making a fresh account) and allow you to reclaim and transfer your patron time, lifetime sub status, cosmetics, mounts, and other bits and bobs. You’ve got until August to take advantage of all that.

Stay tuned for Larry’s impressions and MJ’s stream later today, and in the meantime, check out our roundup of guides, interviews, and news leading up to today.

Secret World Legends patron benefits revealed - [AL:SWL]Folks have been waiting a while for the lowdown on the Secret World Legends patron benefits, and Creative Director Romain Amiel just shared some tidbits with us. The benefits for subscribing…

Looks like veteran players will get their character slots back too.

Aaaaaaaargh!! It won’t let me get it on Steam :(

The Steam release isn’t until July.

Reader
Kevin McCaughey

Well that sucks :( I want it on steam as I have SteamTool and can move my steam games off SSD and onto HD and vice versa.

Okay, I had one name saved from my TSW account that I was supposed to be able to use in SWL. I went into SWL to make a character (logging in with my exact same TSW credentials) and my name shows taken.

Hopefully it’s being saved for me, but how do I get to use it in SWL?

Reader
Sleepy

You had to reserve it beforehand I’m afraid. I wouldn’t have known if someone here hadn’t told me. It might just be showing taking because it’s flagged as in use by TSW – log into the old TSW account page and see if there’s an option there to reserve your name.

Reader
Denice J. Cook

It *was* reserved for me. I *did* do it. The account name reservation page showed that one name reserved for me before SWL went live.

But now the account reservation page doesn’t show the name as reserved for me. Would I just automatically be able to use it if it had been saved for me? Because I can’t.

Reader
Sleepy

Legacy transfer completed, creating character. Templar, natch.

Reader
Jeff Risu Dailey

After a hiccup on their part with the transfer legacy buttons not showing they are showing now. After a quick transfer it updated the no subscription back to the Lifetime Patron that I like to see. Now to see if the server is actually stable.

At least the launcher is pulling data now. Of course, it’s pulling at about 50k/s, so it kind of seems like it would be quicker to walk to Raleigh from Texas with a thumb drive and pull the data off their servers . . . but at least it’s downloading

Reader
Kinya

The Servers are currently scheduled to come online at 16:00 EDT (4:00 PM). We originally announced it would go live at 14:00 EDT, but is now delayed.

I forgot to leave the patcher running last night when I slept, and it was only opened a little bit ago, so doesn’t look like I’ll be in on the relaunch. That gives me a bit of a sad, but it’s okay. I’ll hop in tomorrow… if I remember to leave the patcher up!

What exactly qualifies as a “Veteran player”???

Reader
Geoffrey Smith

Ok, with NDA lifted….

How Patron status worked in the beta was much the same how it works in TSW. Same types of benefits; ie. Flat increase to Exp (15%), flat increase to Anima Shards (one of the currencies, think it was 10%) resets, gaiined rewards over times, etc.

One thing that was missing was a stipend of Aurum (the pay currency) instead Patrons got a free cache key (lock box) daily. Basically it worked out to a free lock box a day as the boxes dropped pretty regularly (And could be vendored for anima shards).

Towards the tail end of the beta it showed a price of 12.99 monthly for Patron status, but it was unclear if this was in dollars or Euro.

I was a little…ummm… surprised.

Reader

Greaterdivinity

Interesting, kinda disappointing about lockboxes replacing the stipend, I was a big fan of the stipend. What’s in those lockboxes, just the usual assortment of consumables/cosmetics etc?

Other perks all sound alright, I really have to wonder what was so hard or required so much secrecy that Funcom couldn’t list it out. Now to wonder what the additional GM benefits are…

Thanks for the info.

Reader
Geoffrey Smith

Consumables, cosmetics, sprints, pets from the listing, yes. The kind of stuff you would imagine.

My disappointment was partially about the lack of a stipend, but I was softened with the reality that Aurum can be bought on a exchange (like the dilithium exchange inS TO) so there are options there. It was also related to less of a currency gain. You use Anima shards to upgrade your weapons, so getting as much as you can is a big deal. And the second currency (mark of favors) have soft caps in how much you can gain daily, but no increase in gain of them from patron status.

Reader
Kickstarter Donor
Greaterdivinity

Bleh. Getting one daily is kinda nice, but I’d still take a cash shop stipend (even if it’s overall of lesser value) over the lockboxes any day.

Reader
Geoffrey Smith

I wouldn’t disagree.

Reader

downloader is working now. Why is it so slow? It might be next week by the time it’s finished

Got the beta client to patch now. 60MB

Reader
Sray

This means the NDA is over, right? So, can people start answering the real question so many of us have: is the combat still crap?

Reader
Geoffrey Smith

Ha, sweet, the community manager says the NDA is down, sooo….

The combat, I fell, is vastly improved. Obviously, this is my opinion from the beta, and dependent on how you feel about mouse look combat.

One of the biggest changes isn’t just the mouse look, but also how the weapons work now. Combat itself is much quicker with small pack mobs, as all the starting builds give you easy access to some kind of AoE that allows you to take down packs quickly and move on. The word that comes to mind is streamlined. Same applies to the builds.

NDA is now over

I got lucky and got the beta version downloaded about 30 minutes before the server is down message came up. Just hoping the update to live isn’t going to be a problem. Hope your download goes as quickly and smoothly as possible when they eventually flip the switch

Any idea on the filesize of the download, at least? I can at use that to guestimate when I’ll be able to get in tonight (if at all), which would be handy for planning my evening : )

I believe my end file size was ~45GB. Not at home to give you an exact number, sorry.

Yeesh, that big? RIP my data cap this month, I guess. Oh well, guess it’s likely a wash for me today as I’ll be spending all evening downloading the bloody thing.

Reader
Hirku

The 45 – 47 GB is the final install size. You actually end up downloading 20 – 25 GB (can’t remember exactly).

Edit: Forgot about the minimal/full options. Minimal download is about 14 GB. Maybe enough to save your data cap from a gruesome death.

Reader

For the full download I got 47.7 GB. There is a minimum client option which if I remember said would be good for the first five hours of game play with the remainder streaming in as you play. Not sure the actual download size though for that as I didn’t go use that option.

Reader
Geoffrey Smith

Well, it is basically the whole game, with all the voice files and everything. So yeah, it is a big download.

Reader
Kickstarter Donor
Greaterdivinity

Yeah, but the art assets and everything aren’t that high quality by any means. The audio etc. should be compressed, there’s no reason for it not to be. This kind of stuff frustrates the hell outta me. Looking at my Vanquish install, for example, the file is around 20GB. However only about 2.5GB or so is actually game data, the remaining like 16+GB? All uncompressed cutscenes.

I get that leaving uncompressed files that like that helps cut down CPU min requirements (it’s the reason why Titanfall 1 had such a huge install, almost all the data was uncompressed audio rather than game data), but it’s bloody brutal for those of us with data caps (300GB a month -_-) and/or slow download speeds : (

Reader
Geoffrey Smith

Yeah, it is the unfortunate reality with current internet structures for sure.

I am sure the size is related to uncompressed audio, has to be really.

Would have been nice to get a link to a functional downloader before launch. Players shared the beta client downloader, but it refused to actually retrieve the download manifest or whatever and just sat there doing nothing all last night.

My pre-launch impression thus far is that Funcom hasn’t changed a single bit over the past decade, they’re still shooting themselves in the foot with their launches, failing to communicate effectively, and making idiotic decisions. They’ve managed to takes months of excitement and hype from my end and turn it into a bubbling, seething frustration in the week leading up to their actual launch.

Great job, Funcom. Please don’t fuck this up. I know it’s more important for you, since it’s your money that’s at stake, but please don’t fuck it up for those of us who love TSW and want to see it succeed. The game deserves much better than what you are giving it right now. Much better.

Reader
Koshelkin

Download of the client itself is now enabled. Start your patcher. =)

Sadly, suck at work for a while longer : (

Though on the bright side it’s a short day, which I’d forgotten about. So that’s pretty nice, at least. Should be able to get the client at least fully downloaded with some time to at least create my character then, yay.

Reader
Koshelkin

Downloading isn’t possible for anybody yet and they’ll announce on Twitter when you’re able to download. Furthermore there’s a link to the downloader at the top of the main page. It says “Download”.

Now there is, I don’t believe there was one before, no? Either way, the fact that there has apparently been zero pre-loading is pretty sad/disappointing. I have no clue why they would not allow pre-loading for veteran players for the headstart, this just seems like them rushing the damn game out the door to quarterly earnings. And yes, I’m getting cynical.

Reader
Koshelkin

Anyway, if you participated in Beta you can just update your Betaclient.

Reader

Greaterdivinity

That’s cool, good for you.

Legitimate gripes are “venom”? Nah bro, I’ve been hype and positive about SWL for months, even in the face of a lot of criticism that the game was getting from other salty vets/GM’s.

Do you have something to actually contribute with your response, or did you just want to ignore the criticism and throw a blanket defense out for Funcom?

I’m curious as to what the defense is for not detailing the subscription/GM rewards ahead of launch was, especially as they said all that information would be “coming”. Well, launch is here. So where is it?

Estranged
Reader
Kickstarter Donor
Estranged

The game is not launched, it is a soft launch.

They are being so generous to vets, what is the problem?

Perhaps they should have released a FAQ concerning GMs. I’m a GM and the assumption is I will receive a monthly gift, but not so much currency. They need us to buy things.

This is not something to rage about, life is too short.

There is so little information about some pretty big parts of their plan that folks are getting understandably anxious at this late stage. It is not salt its not being bitter or venom or however you’re trying to paint this.

It is understandable frustration from folks who don’t hate SWL or Funcom, indeed speaking for myself I want this to be a big success as I would like to continue the story. Even so I can still criticise poor dissemination of information while still hoping for things to be successful despite the issues.

Reader
Geoffrey Smith

Patron benefits, for starters. That’s a big one that remains an official mystery. I know it was covered in the beta, but since that was NDA’d till like… still…. there is no actual word on it.

My bigger worry is that they aren’t releasing not because of some sort of nefarious reason, but because they simply aren’t sure. Which feels like a bigger indictment.

Reader
Kickstarter Donor
Greaterdivinity

I’ve been positive about this game for months.

This is, for all intents and purposes, launch. Just as the head starts were for ESO and FFXIV earlier this month. Were those games still unfinished, with players unprepared by launch day (no preloading due to the games already being live, unfortunately) and some key pieces of information still unknown? No, all that info was well known and communication was pretty damn clear for both games leading up to their head starts.

They SHOULD be generous with their vets, especially GM’s. We’re losing hundreds/thousands of hours of time invested in our TSW characters if we want to continue to play a supported version of the game and more of the story. We’re getting fucked, and things like a headstart should absolutely be part of what they’re delivering as a bit of a “make-good” to the existing community.

They released a FAQ when they announced SWL, with vague mentions of sub rewards and GM perks. They repeatedly said they’d provide more details at a later date/closer to launch. We’re at launch now and we still don’t know a damn thing publicly. That’s not good at all.

Preloading is not actually happening yet. The launcher keeps giving error 105.

That’s Funcom for you… the only company that makes GETTING their game more challenging than playing it. :p

Yeah it’s for everyone. Seems that they ‘broke’ something with a hotfix or that’s the rumor. Just about everyone is 105-ing. Reddit link below:

11:00am EST

So far, can’t download the game to be ready for later. Just keep getting this “downloading patch information” notice with no movement.

Finally ends with “Error 105, contact customer service” lol. Shouldn’t this portion be operational (just the download)?

Looks like Funcom is off to a good start again… /sigh

Reader
Jeff Risu Dailey

Making it harder on themselves. Just waiting now for the launch server to crash as everyone tries to update at the same time.

Reader
A Dad Supreme

One thing I’ll say Funcom has got me really interested in… the new Fallen Gate server on EQ2 next week for my first time (time locked).

I haven’t played EQ2 forever, but things like this and a lot of disappointing “new” MMOs have made it far easier for me to return to try out “old school” MMOing again.

Reader
TheDonDude

Is it intended that the patcher just says ‘Downloading patch information’ until erroring out with a 105 message?

edit: to answer my own question, sounds like everyone is getting this error. Not sure what the pre-download refers to, then.

venatis

It should do. All that should happen is, the client will download through steam and it’ll be in your library. You’ll log in to the actual game with your Funcom account – no linking needed. That’s how it worked with The Secret World.

Reader
Geoffrey Smith

I can’t see how it wouldn’t since it is account based. You are logging into the game through a SWL account created on their homepage.

Reader
silverlock

Their have been mmo’s that didn’t link accounts. Have they flat out said you’d be able to link your Funcom account to your steam account?

Reader
Geoffrey Smith

Steam would have to log you in directly to SWL’s servers to bypass using an SWL account. Does it even do that now with TSW?

Reader
silverlock

CE doesn’t require a Funcom account to play, if they require a Funcom account to play they will lose a lot of the players they are hoping to gain.
