PSA: How to play or restore your original Secret World install

Anyone who tried to log into his or her Secret World client after the launch of the reboot yesterday found that Secret World Legends client overwrote the original game. If that happened to you, don’t panic! We have a fairly easy fix from support that we’ve personally tested, and it works like a charm. Here’s how you can repair and safely launch your TSW client:

  • Save the LocalConfig.xml file from your TSW account page (under download button)
  • Replace the LocalConfig.xml in your TSW file with the one you saved.
  • Launch the game with the PatcherSetup.exe in the TSW folder  — not the default ClientPatcher.exe.
  • Enjoy!

Cheers, John!

So I finally got around to trying to do this. NOTHING WORKS. I repeat NOTHING WORKS. PatcherSetup.exe still loads to SWL with the saved LocalConfig.xml from my TSW account page. The only solution is an entirely new client download.

I am so angry with Funcom right now.

I tried to follow the above instructions, but there is no PatcherSetup.exe on my system! Anywhere!

When I figured out that TSW had been replaced by SWL (bit of a shock), I uninstalled SWL, and redownloaded and reinstalled TSW. Game came up, played for a few hours. Life was good.

Restarted later, and SWL replaced TSW again. Thats when I found this site. I saved the LocalConfig.xml file from the TSW site, but it was Identical to the one already on my system.

So, I uninstalled and reinstalled again, on both my desktop and my laptop. But again, no sign of PatcherSetup.exe. There was a TheSecretWorld.exe, TheSecretWorldDX11.exe, AwesomiumProcess.exe, and of course ClientPatcher.exe.

Everything above either doesn’t run, *or* runs ClientPatcher.exe which immediately tries to replace TSW with SWL.

And the elusive PatcherSetup.exe never shows up (I have a utility that monitors all file activity – it just never appears, in temp or anywhere else).

Bottom line: I *can* play TSW, but every time I have to shutdown, I have to uninstall and reinstall from scratch.

If they are trying to discourage people from playing TSW, I think they’ve found a good way to do it!

I was fairly angry that the launcher converted my install to Legends without asking permission, or even having the courtesy to notify me it was doing so.

I do appreciate that the ability to restore the original is there.

This was a club-footed move. Is it really asking too much to have had the launcher throw up a dialogue box asking, “Would you like to update to Legends (Y/N)?”

*headdesk* FC are now just looking for any excuse to kill off their legacy games. I was thinking about doing the legacy account transfer just in case, but continuing to play TSW a bit this summer. Seems even that will be a pain.

Are FC going to properly resolve this or is everyone going to have to do the local config fuckery if they want to continue TSW, thereby forcing a faster shutdown?

(I expect their resolution to the issues AO has right now will be to more or less ignore it while Anniversary sub sale is on, then let it continue to be hacked to oblivion until it can no longer be safely kept running and the last remaining players who fear for the safety of their account details leave).

I don’t see why they cant leave both sites open. Or add a big button to the original game on the new website.

Because they sadly want to kill off the old game, they pulled the sale of it from all stores and I am not sure how long retail codes would work for.

I am sure there’s now a countdown for the orignal game in terms of how long they truly plan to keep it online for. I wish they could run both games long-term, but they’d showed little interest in doing so.

June-August, available for transfer. Sept-Dec, falling due to unavailable for transfer. 2018, may as well shut down, especially if SWL manages to add new story.

The pony has the truth of it. TSW has been a dead game walking ever since SWL was announced.

OK, I have the opposite issue. Thought I’d like to check out the check out the reboot, started up Secret World from Steam, and its the same old game.

The Steam version of SWL will not be available until the end of July. To play now, you must use Funcom’s installer. The download on minimized takes 4-5 hours.

This is not true at all the steam version will be changed over to SWL on launch and if you want to continue playing TSW you need to download the legacy installer from your account page. The updated TSW localconfig.xml file is also available to download from your account page.

IS there a way to fix the default to C: drive? My game is on an external hard drive.

What kind of team do they have working on SWL? No one thought about this problem before hand? And given what I saw in the new SW last night, I definitely need my TSW files. I doubt anyone will work on a fix anytime soon, they are having enough problems getting people in and straightening out the legacy system.

Reader

They don’t see it as a ‘problem’ – they WANT to end usage of TSW and move everyone to TSWL. It’s intended.

Reader
Moldavia

I doubt this as there is no real financial loss to them which game you play since people will spend money on both games. There will be people who will still play TSW only and not want to play SWL. Yes eventually they might shut it down but probably not for a long while. The bigger concern is removing the old one and losing paying customers which is why they are keeping both systems running in the first place.

Glad I saw this before I decided to download it, I’ll hold off until later when they fix it.

Just don’t hold your breath while waiting. You know how they tend to be about fixing issues. lol.

Yeah true, maybe if I wait until its on Steam that might be a workaround fix as it should install it in a different folder.

Sadly, probably the smartest move you could make. Though keeping an eye open to see if they do fix it isn’t a bad call. I’m just more annoyed that this simple error comes down to either incompetence or malfeasance, either is unacceptable.

Well it’s not over written the whole game, “it looks” like they wrote over the TSW patcher with the SWL patcher/executable. The games style there in another folder it’s that they’ve screwed up their patcher with sloppy programing. Really annoying at times on how incompetent they are over the basic stuff.

I had just discovered this crap because last night I downloaded SWL just incase I later changed my mind about playing. I was going to secure my legacy transfer. Of course they’ve not completed that work btw. You go into your account info and it select the “Secret World Legends Name Reservation” and it takes you to another page which gives you instructions but there is no place to do what they’re telling you.

Seriously this company is just one SNAFU after another on the basics, that’s before we even get into the other stuff. After all these years you’d think they’d learn from past errors, tighten up their act and learn to do these things with less issues. :(

They didnt even fix double shotguns glitch that plagued TSW for years and was the most reported bug. Cant expect much from this team

Are they going to fix this so we’ll be able to run both clients independently? I was planning on having both clients installed so I could log into either at whim. I haven’t logged in to TSW since the arrival of SWL so nothing should be corrupted…yet. I’m quite happy to wait until they get it right, so long as I know they are planning on making it work properly.

Let’s hope, because this is beginner error bullshit to be blunt. I honestly wasn’t going to play SWL or at least not for a bit. I just wanted to take advantage of the legacy transfer. Of course I see that I only get one character not my three that I played in TSW. lol.

Anyhow I love how we’re going to have to jury rig crap to work the way it should. Typical Funcom. I shouldn’t ever be surprised.

You will eventually get your extra character slots. I saw an announcement in SWL earlier today.

Reader
Zen Dadaist

Did it mention anything about transferring more than 3 characters? as a Grandmaster I have 4.

Reader
Moldavia

You cannot transfer any actual character from TSW to SWL. Only some of your clothing, pets and sprints will transfer over. Also as GM none of your bonus points carry over either only bought points. You will start new characters in SWL.

I wish I saw this before deleting SWL folder to redownload 50gb+ again

Reader
Hirku

The download size is compressed to about half the install size. Choosing the Minimal Install reduces the download to about 14 GB.

I went for full and 4 hours later still waiting for DL

Which would still be a whole day and maybe a bit more for me lol.

Haha, hey you gotta take what silver lining you can get.
