WRUP: Items observed in this week’s recycling edition

A 1985 edition of a travel guide to Sweden. Seven broken glass bottles with the words “Sammy sux” written on them in permanent marker. A sealed box which was marked as “Don’s Crap.” Don, sleeping off a bender. Seventeen cans of Mountain Dew Green Label, which would be unremarkable except for the fact that none of them were opened. Half a bed. Half a phone book. All of a half-sized stepladder.

Four ant farms filled with glitter. A completed film manuscript entitled “Star Wars VII: The Force Blows Up Kylo Ren.” Far too many Tabula Rasa collector’s editions to count. Don again, sleeping off another bender. Don’s parole officer, looking for Don. This week’s installment of What Are You Playing. An entire cake with a fist indentation in it. Prom photos. Three bags of human hair. And, of course, raccoons.

Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): When not having flashbacks of bad VR trips at the LA Convention Center for Anime Expo this weekend, I’ll be doing a little Pokemon Go, and maybe ARMS, offline. I don’t take my Switch out with me much, but I’ve been having to escape the house to destress lately, making home console time rather short.

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): Heading home after real-life festivities this weekend, so I won’t have my PC for MMOs at the ready. But I’ve been testing out dozens of phone games, which is something! Finally picked up Crashlands!

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): I can probably just take Final Fantasy XIV as a given for the next several months, yes? Also I’ll be dipping into DC Universe Online for Choose My Adventure.

Justin Olivetti (@Sypster, blog): I’m up to my neck in Secret World Legends, so I’ll probably be getting in some good time trying to wrap up Kingsmouth. I should also be doing more Bingo Boffin quests in Lord of the Rings Online and figuring out The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind while I’m at it.

Your turn!

MEA MP grinding (bit by bit more comfortable with Gold, even if I’m always the worst one there). SWL! – done Kingsmouth save for grabbing all Legends, and at the Savage Coast hotel.

A weird week for gaming here.

I picked up both Batman: Arkham Knight and Elite: Dangerous on the cheap for my PS4, but I ended up liking neither of them — to the degree that both of them are already gone from my machine’s hard drive.

Elite: Dangerous plays better (or, at least, more easily) using console controls, in my opinion, but I just didn’t enjoy the gameplay any more than when i tried the game on PC.

Similarly, Arkham Knight is now free of its infamous launch bugs, but I just didn’t enjoy it.

Now, I’m not suggesting either game is bad, or shite, or whatever — all I’m saying is that I didn’t find any fun, for me personally, in either game.

It’s been a while since I’ve encountered a game that was a flat-out dud for me as a gamer, let alone two, but this pair just didn’t call to me.

Even though I got them cheap, I suspect I would’ve had more fun if I’d taken the money I’d spent on them, put it in a pile, lit in on fire, and watched the pretty flames. :-D

Again, not suggesting that the games are somehow irredeemably “bad” — only that they really hit me the wrong way.

Then again, Batman: Arkham Origins (now patched) was my favorite recent Batman Arkham game by far, and it still seems like everyone else hates that one, so maybe I’m not a good indicator of gaming tastes. :-)

In other news, my Fallout 4 addiction seems to be waning, but I can’t say much about why without getting into spoilers, which is something I won’t do.

Summary version? I aligned with one of the power factions (plots) in the game, in the hopes of doing a little good in a bleak gameworld, but the story played out surprisingly dark at points.

More bloodshed than even I bargained for, and innocents being killed by my character’s hand, which is never, ever something I like to experience in games.

As part of a multi-stage quest, I was literally told to “Kill everyone in room X” to progress the story, and three or four of the people in the room were what could be classed as noncombatant innocents.

Of course, they’re just unliving pixels at the end of the day, so I moved the quest forward, but I did not enjoy it; it wasn’t what I signed up for when I chose the long-running quest-line; and it basically took the shine off of a game I’d been enjoying immensely up until that point.

Hopefully, next week’s gaming will be more fun.

Take care of yourselves, please, folks. You’re unique in the history of existence, and we’d like to enjoy your acquaintance for as long as possible!

Cheers,

Sorry that Elite: Dangerous and Arkham Knight haven’t worked out for you. Personally had a lot of fun with both those game but different people like different things so yeah.

Out of interest which faction did you align with in Fallout 4? One is an outright evil faction and the remaining ones are all kind of grey and will do something bad for the sake of the greater good as they see it. Now whether you agree with their vision and how comfortable you are with them is of course a personal thing but they do tend to follow that pattern.

Okay, B3, because you’re the person asking, I’ll spill a bit more, but we’re gonna plant a big warning flag on this post, so I don’t accidentally wreck somebody’s game. Deal?

WARNING! POSSIBLE FALLOUT 4 SPOILERS AHEAD! TURN BACK NOW IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!

stop reading …

no, really, stop reading now …

we’re not kidding … you know how B3 can get when he “Hulks out”, best to go read something else. I’m sure there’s a brand-new argument over Star Citizen forming somewhere on the website as we speak …

okay, here we go …

I chose to align with the Railroad, and the irony is, I’d probably do so again. They really do seem to be “the least of all evils” on the game’s socio-political landscape, at least to me.

I think the real problem here is in the game writing.

That “Kill everyone in room X” quest step did not have to play out that way.

Because you’re encouraged to play Fallout 4 immersively, I could think of a couple of ways to achieve the same objective (taking control of the room) without killing innocents — there are only about four civilians present, and they all go into “hide and cower” mode as soon as you declare your intention to seize the room.

Basically, they don’t need to be killed, but the way the mission goals are scripted, the story won’t advance unless everyone in the room is dead (at least it wouldn’t for me).

No way to have that nice little movie style “ethics moment” where you argue with Desdemona, and tell her, “No way. Not happening. I’m finding another way”.

In the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character Dutch, in Predator: “Ah don’t do that kind of vork”” :-)

Even though they’re all only pixels, it broke my immersion in the story, and my identification with my character. My guy is now basically a cold-blooded murderer, which makes me less inclined to want to play him.

Even back in the earliest days of tabletop rpgs, Dungeon Masters were warned by the rules, “challenge your players, yes, but don’t take their characters away from them”.

I think Bethesda dropped the ball on this important concept here.

My opinions, anyway,

Still doing EVE, I find it relaxing. I stay in high sec, I bought some plex with cash and sold it in game for mucho dinero. Now I’m just running missions for fun, i don’t care about advancement.
I started SWL, combat is the biggest difference I don’t know why they didn’t just do a revamp or big patch.(?) Why a whole relaunch? Why destroy everything people had done before? Maybe I’m not there yet… Sypster and MJ will point out the differences, I’m sure. ;-)

This was done 100% completely to draw in a new crowd of players along with old vets. Unfortunately for me SWL is even more boring the TSW was. Combat feels just so simple and basic and it does not seem like you can do a real legit dungeons until max level… maybe I’m wrong there , but it all just feels very easy and boring to me.

I spent most of the week on vacation up in the Lakes Region of NH. Having just gotten back today, I spent the afternoon leveling my freshly minted Troll mage up to 60 in World of Warcraft. I also spent some of today grinding Tailoring, hoping to be able to make a flying carpet so he can cruise Outland in style. Either way I’m going to spend half the night awake listening to people shoot off fireworks. Have a Happy Fourth of July all!

Overwatch, Paladins, and a rogue-like card game called Monster Slayers that’s $6 on Steam and super addictive. “Oh, I’ll just do this one battle and then stop.” “Oh, a treasure. Started a new STO Caitian Engineer, partly so I could just play that sweet new Connie Refit model. Also…I somehow won a T6 Connie from the R&D Promo. Those go for 1.5 bil EC on the Exchange, but nothin’ doing’. This kitty’s going to have a Connie at max level. I like each character to have something unique.

The level of inflation for certain sought-after items in STO continues to boggle my mind.

Like you, I just want these things for the “fun factor”, but billions and billions of credits seems faintly ridiculous, and definitely not worth the effort to buy through the player market. Not for me, anyway.

Congratulations on your good fortune, by the way! Treat that ship right, and she’ll always bring you home. That’s what I’m told, anyway. :-)

BiS geared for my main RDM job in FFXIV so focussing on gathering and crafting now for the big gil. Also still enjoying Ever Oasis. Zelda The Minish Cap meets Animal Crossing, its great but nobody heard of it or bought it last month. RIP ;_;7

Aside from that getting into Malifaux in a big way with friends. They told me the base story of “portal opens to city in abandoned world in 1700’s and starts a magical frontier rush with cowboys, necromancers, mad doctors, gangs of zombie belles, neverborn fairy tail monsters, hillybilly gremlins and so on and i was pretty much sold. Got the starter kit, a Sheamus crew some greenstuff, paints and new brushes and enjoying the e zines, monthly audio dramas and learning to play in the free online version in Vassal. I hear its more popular with women than men due to steampunk+horror+western being the perfect b8 but this shit is totally my jam. Elements of grimm fairy tails, bloodborne, hellboy and wild wild west all smashed together.

So i got something to paint when i’m in those dps dungeon ques for those sweet, sweet tomestones of Verity :p

I’m working on my Master Mode playthrough of Zelda: BotW, though it remains to be seen if I’m going to stick with it. I’ll also continue playing Fallout 4 while I finish modding up Oblivion.
I was planning on starting Stormblood content today, but plans with friends are making it seem like that might get pushed back to tomorrow or Monday.

FFXIV, FFXIV, FFXIV… uh… maybe some SWL… HotS for dailies and such… possibly might play more on Smite for the event going on, or check out DotA 2 finally. *shrug* There’s a lot of options but I mostly want to focus on FFXIV. Still only level 63 because I keep getting distracted.

Also heavily tempted to pick up Tales of Berseria – been itching to play another Tales game in a long time since the last one I played (and loved) was Vesperia, and the reception for Berseria has been overwhelmingly positive on Steam. Plus $30 for a game that only came out earlier this year? Yeah that’s hard not to pass up. Also might finally grab the DMC 4 Special Edition that I’ve been wanting to play for awhile now.

Checking out the Stormblood expansion in FFXIV. So far the storyline is pretty decent, and full of twists which i really enjoy. I also gave up on leveling the SAM, as i find the job to be kinda dull. Visuals are uninspiring, and the over-reliance on combos takes the fun out of combat in my opinion. I decided to level up my NIN instead. At least i can twirl around!

Aside from that, i picked up Divinity: Original Sin from the Steam sale. Hoping to put in some gaming time with the friends in the coming days, right after Canada Day weekend.

The longer I game, the more I appreciate games which have twists and turns in the story which I didn’t see coming. It’s good to be pleasantly surprised, especially when so many games seem to tell familiar stories, where you can sort of tell what’s coming from several miles away.

Enjoy, Loopy!

I’m on a “stay-cation” right now, so there’s plenty of time for gaming.

I picked up Shadow of Mordor on Steam for $5. It’s violent, shallow fun when it’s not actively trying to piss me off: every time you encounter a captain the camera cuts to them and they say some threatening stuff; which sounds cool, but few things send in gaming me into a frothing at the mouth rage faster than the game taking away control of my camera, particularly when I’m trying to run away from a crowd. Apart from that little thing, I’m enjoying it, but not sure if I’ll actively try to finish it or just keep it on the hard drive for when I just want to mindlessly kill stuff.

Last night I’d meant only to goof around with the Xbox in-home streaming feature for a few minutes, and I ended up playing Halo: Combat Evolved for a good two hours straight, and I’m hoping to do some more of that today. Most of the time when I try a present day first person shooter they’ve loaded it up with tons of screen shake, and the guns have a bunch of recoil; both of which are things that piss me off. It’s fun to get back to a game that keeps it basic, and makes you realise that all of the stuff that’s been getting added to these games hasn’t necessarily improved them.

I also keep logging into SWTOR for about thirty minutes every day. I stupidly bought a 60 day sub deal from the Origin store over a month ago, and now I’m realising how those subs days are being wasted, so I keep logging in to run around to get bored very quickly.

I’m determined to get back into Persona 5 this week, now that I have time to really do that. It’s fun when actually running around in a dungeon and stuff like that, but the story cutscenes with the grossly exaggerated behaviours of the adult characters, and the blind compliance of the teens get pretty difficult to swallow at times: it does not seem to translate very well when a person is not somewhat immersed in Japanese culture either naturally or via ingesting Japanese entertainment fairly regularly (which is common for teens and twenty-somethings these days, but not usually a part of the world of your average 40 year old white male).

And finally I’m considering whether or not I want to start a project: moving my rig out of its disgustingly huge Cooler Master HAF X case and into a Fractal Design Define R5. I haven’t built a system in so long, I’m itching to do so, but not willing to pull the trigger on an actual new system (too many new things out this fall and early next year to upgrade when my current rig is still quite adequate). I figure transferring into a new case would scratch the itch, but I also know that doing so would likely make me start saying “well, maybe a new PSU… and an upgraded CPU heatsink…” and before I know it I’m a thousand dollars in the hole and still basically playing with the same computer.

Reader
Kickstarter Donor
mysecretid

Aye, computer upgrades can be a rabbit-hole you fall down, to never be seen again, if one isn’t careful.

Be sure to leave a trail of breadcrumbs so that you can find your way back! :-)

Glad to see that you’re keeping busy with games you generally enjoy, which is not always an easy achievement, I know.

I have noticed that some of my recent games allow one to turn off screen shake and similar effects (my personal pet peeve is controller vibration in console games — how does this simulate anything real or immersive?), but of course, you don’t know until after you buy whether or not you can turn off the effect(s), so it’s not a point-of-purchase option available.

Anyway, have fun … and remember the breadcrumb trail!

Cheers,

Reader
Sray

Controller vibration is the most annoying thing ever injected into video games. Before I launch any game that I’m playing with a controller, I make sure the vibration is shut off. I would love if consoles came with a system setting to universally shut controller vibration off for all games so that I never have to worry about that ever again.

Reader
Kickstarter Donor

No argument here. I often wonder why controller vibration isn’t always turned off by default, but I suppose the PS4 people consider it a “feature:” which must be demonstrated at every opportunity?

Sigh.

Cranking out some alts during the EQ xp/rare spawn boost week. Watching the third heat of the Age of Sigmar Grand Tournament on Twitch and doing a little painting this weekend. Pft I call foul on the 1985 Swedish travel guide as everyone knows that Mountain Dew of any sort is not officially sold in Sweden. Does no one have any standards and research this stuff any more. This is just blatant product placement and advertising shilling in the grossest manner. hehe :p

Well with that unpleasantness out of the way I may as well tell you what I am playing this weekend while I am here. Secret World Legends, surprise. Currently in City of the Sun Gods and it is as horrible as I remember. Sorry I was never a fan of the whole Egypt thing even in TSW. Some effort has been made to make travelling around a little easier (they added jump pads and temporary portals) but yeah not my favourite region in the game by any means.

Spent some time in the dungeons doing the story instances both in group (when I use my patron keys) and solo. Solo was just to see if I could do them plus hunt for lore that I don’t seem to have chance to nab while doing the group stuff. These story dungeons serve as a good intro to SWL dungeons but yeah not really too hard to do.

I imagine that a lot of folks who were hardcore TSW dungeoneers are looking forward to the imminent release of the elite versions (which I understand are pretty hard at the higher tiers.) Not sure whether I will do them myself we will have to see how I feel or what groups are like for that stuff

Hope everyone has a safe and happy gaming weekend :-)

The thing I always found weird about the Egypt zone is that it has some truly memorable stories (e.g. the father and his children) and characters (Saïd!), even while the zone itself is a colossal pain in the ass in terms of getting around easily. Talk about a mixed blessing!

Subbing LotRO after all the frustration that is Funcom. Felt nostalgic and figured I’d give Standing Stone a chance after wasting waaaay too much bandwidth on Funcom recently. The game world still really draws me in, LotRO really captures the magical feeling of Middle Earth. Even after all these years.

Oh, fun thing I hadn’t noticed with SWL until I finally got in. They mangled the controls as far as mouse move/look/left/right mouse buttons go. Neither my wife nor I can work with that. So much for even bothering to give them a serious try even with all my criticism of what they were doing with SWL. :/ Feeling nausea for an hour after messing around with it just won’t work.

I have that happen when I watch video streams often. MJ’s not to bad so I can usually watch her’s. Some YouTube videos of motorcycle reviews with helmet mounted cameras lay me out fast with the puke factor. lol.

First started experiencing this about two decades ago when I was pushing 40. Went to a doctor and they said welcome to getting old. Mentioned something about the fluid in the inner ear thickening as we get older. I now get seasick when I didn’t used to get that either. Also last time I was climbing up to the roof with a ladder and I glanced down I had a bit of vertigo.

It’s amusing when your doctor’s just say “welcome to getting old”. I have that happen all the time these days. Or you ask, “so how long will I have to take this (insert drug)? or how long will I need to do this stretch? And their reply is frequently, “the rest of your life, welcome to getting old.” lol

Subbing actually. Honestly I’ve yet to find an mmorpg that I enjoyed much if I wasn’t subbed. I did log into LotRO some years ago when I was subbed to check something out and found that though it wasn’t as painful as SWTOR it still bothered me. I had a few characters in Esteldin in North Downs area and noted that they couldn’t do the quests there without buying the expac or subbing.

Basically that reinforced for me that I needed to always be subbed if I was playing. Part of what drew me back was wanting to check out Minas Tirith I’ve not been back to see that plus the upcoming Mordor release of course. :)

Right now I’ve been going through one character after another getting reorganized and acquainted with everything. I am a total altoholic when it comes to mmorpgs, including all things crafting. In the case of LotRO that means a lot of stuff to go through.

Yeah from what I recall. The games very playable without subbing versus SWTOR, the price for the various areas that aren’t included are cheap from what other players have said to me in the past. I just prefer to sub when I play.
