Star Trek Online patches in Season 13.5 today

Soon, Star Trek Online will be heading to the next big Star Trek convention in Las Vegas, with big announcements for the future of the game and what comes next. For the moment, however, the game is going to be keeping its players entertained with the Season 13.5 patch. This patch sees a new featured episode, Brushfire, sending players to seek one of history’s greatest Klingon generals to deploy against the Tzenkethi threat.

Players will also be able to take on a new set of weekly challenges with the new Endeavour system, which are limited-time challenges running for two to three days for bonus rewards. There’s also a new Ferengi Admiralty project for players to work on and the usual quality-of-life improvements you’d expect from a patch. Check out a video down below explaining the broad strokes of the patch, or just jump into the patch notes if you prefer reading to watching.

This first task of the highly vaunted Endeavor system that will help players “to experience the depth and breadth of STO”?

Kill 15 borg ships! Woohoo!

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of their “Season” 13.5:

The Good:
Well written, fresh new story episode. Loved seeing the return of Martok (and JG Hertzler), and his being alive some 40 years after DS9 had a reasonable story excuse. Hopefully there’s more episodes with Martok coming. Also, Rodek (Tony Todd) might be getting some revelations in a future episode.

The Bad:
The “Endeavour system”. Challenging events every few days. First event: Kill 15 Borg ships. Queue for the nearest ISA (Infected Space Advanced), completed 90 seconds later. Boo-ooo!!!

The Ugly:
Ferengi “Admiralty” Campaign. Copy-Paste of the Klingons Admiralty Campaign, complete with the same final reward (30,000 Dilithium). Only real benefit I can see, is having an easy source for GPL (Gold Pressed Latinum). Not that Latinum is useful for much, but still.

LASTLY… STILL no Exploration System of any kind, in a game with the title Star Trek, whose very monologue involves “explore strange new worlds, and seeking out new live and new civilizations”. They removed the woefully bad “Genesis” system from the Exploration Clusters over a year ago, with the promise of a replacement in the coming months. No replacement of any kind as of yet.

The “Genesis” system was so laughably bad that I’d rather they have no exploration if they can’t do it right. The missions were all the same. Scan five things ground or space, click on five consoles, kill five groups of enemies, or provide X amount of commodities.

Well, personally, I’d rather have a system that was flawed and repetitive, but something to actually do, than nothing to actually do.

If you didn’t like it, you could ignore it. But if you liked it, like I did, it was a fun mindless time killer.

Now there’s nothing just missions to kill X

In case you lacked the reading comprehension, I did say that the Genesis system was “woefully bad”. My point being, they pulled the system with the explicit promise that a replacement would be coming “in a few months”. It’s been over a year now. Where’s the Exploration? NONE.

They pulled the Genesis system a lot longer than a year ago (and yes, promised a replacement; but hey, they for the longest time said they were going to revamp the STO Gateway and take it out of Beta – and we know how that turned out.)

IMO – the Dev team of STO has burned out. We’ll get maybe 3 new story missions a year; and as the Endeavor and Ferengi Admiralty Systems show – as many quick renamed cut and paste mechanics, and new repacked Lock Boxes as they can shovel out.

Yeah, haven’t really been paying much attention to STO development. Only really “come back” to play once and a while when there’s a new “Season”, complete the new episodes, and then the game ends up dormant yet again.

STO needs to end, and be taken up by developers who actually know how to make an MMO, and stay true to the core of Star Trek. STO’s only real redeeming feature, is the storyline being fairly well done. Rest is kinda meh.

This 100%
Only come back to play new episodes and leave after that. Not about to grind any lame rep. systems in this game.

No, I didn’t lack reading comprehension. I was agreeing with you here.

Sorry, long day.
