MMO dev and astronaut Richard Garriott hosts a Reddit AMA on /r/space today

Curious about astrophysics? The Massively OP Podcast brought on a special guest for a fun holiday bonus ‘cast back in 2015 to answer a ton of listener questions on the topic!
Don’t call him a space tourist, but if you want to pick his brain, Richard Garriott is all yours for the afternoon.

Lord British himself will sit for a Reddit Ask Me Anything this afternoon on /r/space as space enthusiasts ask him all about his experiences being a private astronaut. The AMA’s being promoted by NBC’s science wing, which last week hosted a long-form piece by Garriott in which he discussed his lifelong space flight dreams and how he finally realized them, though he shut down the “space tourist label” pretty hard.

Garriott is of course best known to MMO players as one of the founding fathers of the genre thanks to Ultima Online; he’s currently leading Shroud of the Avatar at the helm of his company Portalarium. Most recently, he published a memoir and publicly committed SOTA to Neverdie’s peer-to-peer online money trading venture.

The AMA kicks off at 3 p.m. EDT today, just as this post goes live.

Considering he went through a year of cosmonaut training, had to have a surgery in order to get medical clearance, and also conducted experiments for NASA while aboard the ISS, I think he’s earned the astronaut title.

The fact that he had to pay for it himself is unfortunate. Our taxes pay for all the “official” astronauts, and for the most part I don’t even know who they are or what experiments they were conducting for “the betterment of all mankind”.

I believe it’s entirely possible for Garriott to be both an astronaut AND a space tourist. Per Merriam Webster, an astronaut is “a person who travels beyond the earth’s atmosphere” so he certainly qualifies as that… all space tourists would.

I caught a misspelling in the article. There’s an extra “a” in astronaut.

Not really an austronaut. Just a space tourist. And not really a game developer anymore. Just a name for collecting money.

Surprised at the warm reaction for the AMA.

Is it just me or does anyone else think Richard Garriot has kind of lost it? That interview Justin did with him really made me wonder. Stuff like how he made it seem like a quest tracker was revolutionary really made me worry. If SotA crashes and burns, and his excuse is, “I don’t think anyone really understood what the game was trying to do,” I’ll know for sure he’s lost it.

Astronauts don’t pay for their seat on a flight. They earned their position, with years of training, and years of schooling before that. I also don’t see him anywhere on the list of current, or past, US or international astronauts.

I really don’t understand why he isn’t proud of being one of the first space tourists, which is exactly what he was, in the world. If I could write a check to go into space then 1) I would and 2) I’d still consider it an important landmark. Which it is.

To say he is something else is so egotistical.

Astronaut, huh? I’be been in a couple fistfights. I was also in some plays in grade school. I demand to be addressed as KidWithKnife, actor and boxer! Man, what other cool things have I only done once? This’ll be great for my resume, thanks Richard!

He fielded 20 questions and answered 19 of them. Guess who’s question he didn’t answer. Yep, mine.

Game Dev/Space Question:
Are you paying attention to any of the current space genre games currently out or in development? How do you feel about the direction of the genre and do you see inspiration for future astronautic and space endeavors as a result of them?

Feels bad man.

Interesting question – but all the guy knows is wizard fantasy right?

That’s actually a great question.

One would think. Reading the AMA, if it wasn’t questions about his game or his space flight he seemed to care less

“though he shut down the “space tourist label” pretty hard”

I would not call him a astronaut, space tourist is what I would call him.

And please stop calling the idiot Lord British, I’m British and find it very insulting.

Sorry, he is your LORD.

Hey,12 days on the ISS is legit. NASA does have a “commercial astronaut” designation that would seem to apply

Reader
Wilhelm Arcturus

His Wikipedia entry lists him as a “private astronaut” in his side-bar bio… though those words are a link to the entry on “space tourism.” Is that enough of a compromise?

Also, looking at the list of space tourists, seven in all, he seems to have over-payed.

It seems the price started going up as they discovered they could actually get that much :)

I’m afraid that whenever I read about Richard Garriott’s space exploits these days all I can think of is that other famous astronaut, Howard Walowitz :)!
