Secret World Legends prepares for Monday’s Steam launch

How many do-overs does Secret World Legends get? At least one more, as the rebooted horror MMO is anticipating its Steam launch on Monday after a month of beta live operation.

Funcom is paving the way to a hopefully smooth release with an informative FAQ posted on the SWL site today. The studio notes that the Steam client is different from its own client but that both clients will access the same game servers.

The FAQ covers all of the possible scenarios, including whether players had owned the game in the past, had played on Steam, been playing for the past month, and so on. If you have been accessing Funcom’s SWL client but would rather change it to the Steam client for accessibility and consolidation’s sake, you can — but it is a one-way, one-time process if chosen.

I like the game, but you know this is going to be a clusterfuck. I’ll be surprised if I get any time online at all, what with the login servers melting even with medium traffic.

So let this be clear : Funcom’s CEO called the relaunch their “best effort” and as of today, they didn’t manage to snuff the “crash report on shutdown after using the in-game browser” issue that has been present since 2012.

Considering that the game opens the in-game browser to give you your daily gift …. /popcorn for the Steam launch

Just listened to the Funcom Secret World Legends stream and the Funcom folks explain the whole steam thing. The ARG clues or investigations missions are easier to understand than the various steam transition options they spent most of the show talking about.

I wouldn’t expect the customer service queues to get shorter anytime soon /sigh

Just a “for your info” sorta thing in regards to this games “subscription” plan. Its F2P, but you can pay money to subscribe and be a patron. One of the perks of being a patrons, is that you get a free lockbox key every day. Lockboxes currently are the only way to get a different visual for your weapons, and also contain so pretty hefty materials for advancing your gear. The marketing and info for how you get these keys is a bit vague though, and here is what they dont tell you:

– The only way you get your key, is by logging in. If you are gone for a week from the game, you miss out on getting a weeks worth of keys.
– If you have already collected your daily reward before subscribing, you will miss out on that days key as well. Make sure you subscribe BEFORE claiming your daily login reward.
– Some of the things you will get in the boxes wont be usable until level 50, and will take up limited bag space/bank space, so if you plan on opening a bunch at once, be near a bank.

Adding on to this great list of tips: Don’t open distillate bags if you don’t need the distillates. The bags stack but the distillates don’t. *looks at a bank full of glyph distillates*

I’m truly having a blast with SWL and hope the Steam launch brings in even more players.

My biggest problem with SWL is that it takes up all my gaming time so I can’t fit any other games into my schedule. :)

Now this is a fun game but the new combat is… Meh.

Okay, Funcom, you win. You’ve made it pretty clear you don’t want me to give you any money, so I guess I won’t, just to make you happy.

I’m confused by your comment. I bet their revenue spikes when the Steam client launches. I have refrained from making any purchases in SWL because of the sketchy nature of their payment system. I’m going to feel more comfortable spending money if it comes from my Steam Wallet.

It probably has spiked already, since one of the bleeding-edge no-lifers (DumbOx) already complained about the whales on reddit.

All the years I played TSW was with the direct client but Steam Wallet was connected to my account. It’s the only payment method I will ever use with Funcom. Now instead of continuing as normal, I would need to make an irreversible transfer of my account, download and reinstall the game, and play directly through Steam.

I’m not willing to do any of that. Thus, no money from me to Funcom.

So because you don’t want to reinstall a different client, you are punishing Funcom? From what I understand, other than using a different client, your account will be unchanged (you won’t have to roll a new character, etc.) I don’t understand.

That’s alright, you don’t have to understand. Maybe you will someday, when you finally get tired of jumping through hoops as I did years ago.

I get frustration from jumping through hoops, believe me (I’m 50 years old and have dealt with countless service providers of one kind or another for most of my life). But this is, like, one hoop. It’s not worth getting upset over. But maybe it’s just, at my age, I’ve decided to pick my battles and not worry about most stuff.

I’m almost 50, and I’m still amazed every time I turn my computer and I see moving pixels. And colors. As for a payment system, paypal works great for me, but I know other prefer different methods.

I’m not upset at all, and I don’t even have to pick my battles because I’m not fighting the war.

I have a feeling that the steam community is not going to be so nice to this re-launch. The hard core TSW fans have already jumped in.

The reviews to watch will be from the new f2p players and not the veterans players. They still have the old secret world reviews up on steam which is BS. They have pre release reviews up and the game already have a positive rating and its not on steam yet. That’s just fraud to me.

I’ve noticed a lot of people are wary of their initial payment method. They’ve also added PayPal but I’m now seriously considering converting to the Steam client because then I can use my Steam Wallet for in-game purchases.

The Steam Wallet is both more convenient and cheaper for me; I pay about 5% extra in taxes whenever sending money outside the country by credit card.

Yup given the stories that are still showing up on reddit I must admit using the steam wallet does look to be an attractive option.

However, given how Funcom always somehow seems to make the process of giving them money more complicated that it needs to be I am going to wait till my next renewal before I make that jump. Just to make sure Funcom don’t do a Funcom with the stream wallet too and to give them time to correct things when they do :-)

Heh, love that… “Just to make sure Funcom don’t do a Funcom”, because unfortunately far too often they do indeed do that when it comes to trying to give them money.

Uhhh, your link to the informative faq is not so informative, after all.
