Going to Mordor in LOTRO? Take this handy guide with you!

Players in Lord of the Rings Online are quickly discovering that Mordor doesn’t mess around. The new region will kick your butt and hard, until you’re able to claw your way up to better gear and figure out how the light and shadow system works.

Thanks be to the community for coming together to produce an adventurer’s guide for the new expansion. The guide lays out each zone and its associated quests, along with a few helpful tips to get players through the rougher parts.

Also featured in this thread is an explanation of the allegiance system, a link to the location of all of the rare treasure chests, a guide to the shadow and light system, and pointers for gear acquisition. Cheers for the players who spent time putting this together!

Is the Mordor Expansion the swan song for LotRO? I’m just curious because I like the way Turbine (now Standing Stone?) designs games: I have always particularly liked the way DDO was set up, business model-wise and gaming model-wise (purchasing adventure packs).

I’d just like to see something new developed by them that doesn’t show its age so badly.

The mythos allows for more expansions. Corsairs of Umbar, the Haradrim/Southronds, according to the histories King Elessar (Aragorn) and King Eomer fought many battles together even after the fall of Sauron.

Wow, didn’t think I’d get an article on MassivelyOP based on the guide.
Honoured, and a heads up that it’s ongoing so any changes between beta & live are getting checked and replaced.
Still missing crafting, a few details about some quests and maps for the Lost Lores.

Nope, sorry. Not going. Compared the feature list of Mordor to those of other MMOs, saw the pricing, saw the trailer. Nope, not going there.

One thing i can recommend for anybody that has normal gear is not entering Mordor until you are level 106-107. As stated in the guide items with Light of Earendil are important. Either you take the pocket item or you wait until something drops. On my champion i did not have to wait long. Gear drops relatively good in Mordor and also there are a lot of chests you can loot.

If I wasn’t leveling with my pal I would be having a REAL hard time. They kicked it up from so easy a caveman could do it to personally storming Carn Dum.

Well players had been whining for years that the game was too easy. Now they are eating those words. You can still do the content solo if you are the proper class and you know how to play it. Sure it makes the fights last longer but it can be done. Hell I made a new High Elf Champion and literally Walked into Mordor and have been kicking butt mostly solo thanks to tappers trying to steal my kills.

Spoiler
Unlike the books and movies Samwise is killed and Gollum despite dying is kinda the hero.

Really in the mood to play but I’ve got this error when the client opens since the downtime patch of today. :/ It’s refusing to allow it to update. Such a bummer because I was in the mood big time to play.

Client opens, starts updating, closes, pop up opens up with the below picture. I click on it and the client opens again and starts the process again with the same issue. (sigh) Guess I’ll read the guide for the time being though, thanks for sharing the link Justin.

That was because the game was down for a update due to a bug where people were not receiving the Aria of Valar.

Out of curiosity, did you try right-clicking the shortcut and using the “Run as Administrator” option?

Sorry Dividion, I thought I replied to you yesterday. :/ Yeah that was one of the first things I did. It didn’t work the same error happened. Anyhow I got fixed late last night after uninstalling it, cleaning up the system and doing a fresh download. :)

That was because the servers were down for four hours for a emergency update.

No, the game was back up by the time I first tried to log in. It was “after” that patch that I had tried to log in. It was up per their Twitter account, forums etc. Btw it’s now fixed, I had to totally uninstall the game. Remove all remnants etc and now it works.

As I am stuck in a Path of Exile server queue I did a bit of Googlefu while I was waiting:

OK. Seems like I found the solution. There are two files of the same name – one in the main folder and one in patches folder. What you need to do is to manually replace the old one in the main folder with the new from the patches folder. That would allow the launcher to start updating. However, once that happens, you’d get the same problem with 8 more files that seem totally random (one of them was a readme file in the de folder for some bizarre reason, others were various dll files and the lotroclient.exe – like with patchclient, you would just need to manually replace the old files in the main folder with the new that are automatically updated to this patches folder. Once you get past that, proper download will start (i am currently at 39 percent). Hope that helps. So the issue seems to be that the new launcher files, instead of replacing old ones automatically, go to some new folder and you have to correct that yourself.

While I have no idea if this works (and it is from a post made in 2012) comments later in the thread indicate some folks had success

You’re a gem BBB. My Googlefu fails me more than I care. I tend to call my wife for her Googlefu skills when I need em. Unfortunately she’s out of town right now so I can’t pester her to help me.

She tells me I make my Google searches too wordy. lol. I’ll check the thread and give it a try after dinner. Just realized I’d not eaten since this morning.

Well enjoy your dinner and I hope it works. Me I think I am going call it on PoE and hope they sort out the server issues while I get a good nights sleep. :-)

Sadly so far the things I’ve tried in that particular post didn’t work. I’m reading the rest of the thread, hope you have a good night’s sleep and luck with PoE this weekend.

See if you can get someone to toss you a copy of the PatchClient.dll

Due to either a corrupt or broken file.

Yeah I ended up totally uninstalling it, cleaning out directories, cleaning up my Registry etc and then doing a fresh download. I recalled that in the early years we’d have issues with the software and someone from Turbine at the time made a free bit of software available for re-compacting the data files etc.

Some years later that bit of software stopped working so I used to once a year or so just uninstall and do a fresh install. I realized that the current install was from 2013 when I had this system built and that I’d not done a fresh install since the company formed after splitting from Turbine last year.

Figured what the hell I’d just start fresh. Of course I got a bit too carried away and decided to clear out everything including UI etc settings. So now I’m having to go through and reset that up. Probably do that tomorrow since it’s calling for rain tomorrow. :)

It now works, I tried it last night before heading to bed after the download finished. Was thinking it would be all night downloading but I forgot I’m not at 30mbps now but at 60mbps. :) So the download took a lot less time.
