Guild Wars 2 adds WvW gliding and legendary armor upgrades on August 8

Being in one of Guild Wars 2’s WvW maps has long meant that you can run, but you can’t glide. Unable to briefly defer the pull of gravity, you are forced to walk around on your own two feet, like an animal. But not for much longer; the game update coming on August 8th will carve WvW maps into territories, and within territories controlled by your faction you can happily glide about to your heart’s content. Of course, you won’t be able to glide in other territories, so… if you see people plummet from the air at the border, that’s why it’s happening.

PvP and WvW armor will also be getting upgrade options to legendary armor versions in the AUgust 8th patch; you won’t get new skins, but you will get all of the other benefits of having legendary armor. That means all the stat-swapping fun you could ask for, and you didn’t have to step in a raid to do it! Unless you consider watching people fall out of the sky because they glided too far to count as a raid.

The unexpected quality of life and smaller changes are rolling out. I love it! I hope we get some more.

It’s an ok thing for the borderlands, as those maps were already designed so each particular “home team” of those 3 maps has an advantage to defend it, and with gliding and their default higher position will also add to that!

But on the central map, called the Eternal Battlegrounds with the castle in the middle, the north team will get a slight advantage through gliding, as their initial stroghold in the north is placed way higher than the other in the southeast and southwest!

They did mention, they’re doing “several map adjustments” for that, but that doesn’t sound like a complete map overhaul by raising those 2 other strongholds to the same height! (one lies even in a swamp, right now!) And they did said it’s still only a test, ready to disable it again if it turns out not to be “appropriate”!

I hope that it stys atleast for the borderlands! (And I can only hope they get rid of the worst compromise of still leaving one desert borderland. Guys, either cycle between alpine and desert every month/week or just leave it be!)

They might have added easily accessible updrafts for the lower keeps. They don’t have to completely redesign the areas. Jump pads or updrafts can have the same effect.

Thx, that seems what will actually happen! Didn’t thought about that!

But it will still depend on how much more vulnerable you are while gliding, as there are high ridges between the swamp stronghold and the castle, for instance, while you can still land on the unaccessible walls and stay covered, if needed, between the northern stronghold and the castle! And how much longer it will take you to get to same height (and at which distance from the castle) from each particular waypoint, especially important in critical moments.

Yeah, it’s going to be very interesting to see what changes they’ve made. I hope it works out because it sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

This is pretty neat on it’s own, but there are bigger implications here than just having gliding in WvW. The territory system is likely the foundation for something much larger later. What skirmishes and ticks did for rewards the territory system will do for game play.

It is likely mounts are also going to be connected to it, and that will mean you will want to build a “road” of controlled territories toward the front line so your mounted reinforcements can get there faster. That will change a lot how WvW plays. And of course there are likely to be other things attached to the territory system as well. Hopefully things that help to break up zergs and just going around on a train capping points.

This could be really huge for the game mode later this year.

upgrades or tactivators for territories! or bonus points for connected territories.

at first territories seems small just to know where the borders for objective auras are.
but yeah i agree with you that this opens so many possibilities for changes in how wvw will play and like glinding will be available in this territories i can guess that mounts can be too and just want to test it before actually make the change.
