One Shots: Sacred space

Anyone a little excited about Guild Wars 2 these days? Probably not, but on the off-chance that there’s a glimmer of hype and hope alive, here’s a reminder that there’s some stuff that was put out for the game and other stuff that’s coming for the game. Deserty-stuff.

“I don’t want to spoil much about the latest Guild Wars 2 episode, so here is just a shot from inside of Divinity’s Reach palace temple, where it begins!” Miol submitted.

I wish I could un-spoil myself from that screenshot, because now I know the game’s design plans for the next seven years, all from the subtle clues that are contained in those stained glass windows. How I wish I could erase that knowledge and experience it as a wide-eyed child would!

“Ever log in to games you used to be very serious about?” Severin askes. “A weird picture for me. A hello? A goodbye? This is my gunslinger React. The guild would joke that it’s my name because I don’t. I’ve lost so many screens of the nights we spent in nightmare mode operations around the SWTOR launch. That’s where I took some hutt’s hat and stuffed it full of endgame augments. It looks dumb but to me and maybe a few particular people it represents a single period of strong, clear memories.”

If you’re going to kick some butt, you might as well look the part, right?

Here’s to Kawaii Five-O making the rest of us look bad in Final Fantasy XIV: “Was helping a friend finish their quest to 70 and snapped this rather dynamic pic during a break.”

Utakata doesn’t mind taking a break every now and then in WildStar to check out the view from the back porch of her floating island home. Yeah, it’s sort of OK. Needs more color, to be honest.

“See ya on the other side, Coop!”

And Captain Hirku was never heard from again after that fateful black hole expedition in Elite: Dangerous. We’ll assume that he’s set up as a space pirate king in some far-off galaxy.

Need a screenshot challenge this week? Sure you do! Let’s see a picture or two that represents the most fun you’ve had playing MMOs this summer so far!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

When being creeped out is part of the fun you’re quite likely playing SWL.

I wish these static screenshots could better show off the beauty of the Vashj’ir underwater zone in World Of Warcraft. One of the most enjoyable zones I’ve played through in an MMORPG in a very long time!

Also, a screenshot from my adventures in Star Trek Online — a reminder that, sometimes, Away Team missions don’t always go the way you expected. :-D

To be honest, I am actually standing on top a *huge mushroom.

*Note: Not going to spoil it by saying YUUGE instead. >.<

…and thanks for the pink plug again, Mr. Justin. <3

I had a blast with the waterpark opening in BDO. When I had my fill, headed over to SWL and took a bunch of pics mid-battle during the Whispering Tides event! … only to find out the screenshots aren’t in the screenshot folder there. I need to figure that out!

On to GW2, where all of my friends are riding the hype train through, decided to create an Elonian-themed character as well. I seem to have forgotten how to take full body shots, or maybe we can’t and have to trick the camera! Either way, it’s just a face shot of my new character, who represents all the fun I’ve been having, and look forward to with the expansion sooooon.

“…most fun you’ve had playing MMOs this summer so far!”

Right. I’ve no shame, so I will readily admit I’ve been having a really good go in Twin Saga. I’d had the shortcut on the desktop for more than a month, and after a particularly stressful session in Mechwarrior Online, I decided this little title might be worth a look.

I like anime, and so that was a plus. The combat is a mix of tab-targeting and action combat. There is nothing revolutionary. It is adorable and cute…on the surface. Sometimes these games are regionalised quite poorly for the western market. However, the English writer/translator has done some sublime work, and I dare not skip over the dialogue or text.

In this shot, my Gunslinger Qetesh has finished the quest line for Rita and her (I’m not making this up) Kitty-Kat Crew , and has since joined up with one of the twin Goddesses…Marisa, who will occasionally “pop out of your stomach like that of a C-sectioned infant”, apprentice Enchantress Clara, and my own Senshi companion Fina in order to take on the sub-boss Arch-Ambassador Omar.

Does anyone else see that SWTOR screenshot and think “Its Doctor Bong!”

This week, here’s my mesmer and some of her friends showing off new hair, new faces, and a whole lot of Golden Lion as we get ready for Path of Fire. We’re comin’ home.

Meanwhile, my rebooted Templar enjoys sunny Agartha and a not so sunny basement. Scooby Doo, where are you?

Doctor Bong. Heh. I recently read a comment from early Marvel Comics editor Archie Goodwin stating that, the company was so busy with its unexpected, burgeoning popularity in the 1960s and 1970s that certain things slipped by during the production process which might have otherwise have been censored back in the day — either that, or they figured that kids were still the primary audience for comics, who wouldn’t get the double-reference behind Bong. Bong was a spectacularly goofy villain for Howard The Duck, although my most memorable wacky villain from the Steve Gerber days of silly villains, would have to be The Spanker. I was very young, and found the idea of spanking terrifying.

And a bonus pic as I can’t seem to post more than three in one go, here I am ready to defend Agartha with a bunch of half-naked heroes.

The SWL fashion tips for this summer definitely seem to have included hotpants.

Hirku’s Elite Dangerous shot looks like an album cover.

Image Two: This summer I’ve actually had the most fun playing Hearthstone.

Image Four: Tried out Aion the gameplay didn’t age very well but the game is still beautiful.

Image one and Three: It’s hot. Too hot. Here are some snow pics from WoW and GW2. (I wish I could move the Images into order. Sorry about that.)

Hey thanks, but actually it’s Stellaris and not Elite Dangerous. The space pirate king assumption is spot-on, though. ; )

Hirku — In case you missed my late posting of this elsewhere for you.

My lead battleship in Stellaris firing its spinal-mount weapon as my fleet moves into battle.

Who says strategy games can’t have their exciting moments? :-)

Cheers, pal,

sigh, a limitation of the character builder unfortunately.

Indeed, they could really do to expand the facial options. They could add some more facial pre-sets at the very least — there are surprisingly few, and there were a few more at launch, as I recall.

Going into the “slider hell” of customizing a character still works off the same basic choices, so there’s still less positive variance between character looks than one might expect, even after a long session of tweaking the sliders.

And the randomizer buttons? Urgh. They rarely succeed at making anything other than monsters and freaks — and not the good kind. :-(

Short version: I agree. I love the game, but the character customization could use a dedicated upgrade.

Cheers,
