Guild Wars 2’s free-play Path of Fire preview weekend is live

Update: It’s up, go go go!

Ahead of its September 22nd launch, Guild Wars 2’s Path of Fire expansion will be on public display this very weekend — likely starting early this afternoon, if past patches and tweets are any guide. ArenaNet has previously said we’ll be playing only the first chunk of the storyline and tripping to the Crystal Desert, where we can explore the Crystal Oasis map and test out the mount system with the raptor.

As a reminder, anyone can play this weekend, even if you’ve never purchased the base game (which has since gone free-to-play) or the Heart of Thorns expansion (which is not and will not be free-to-play), and yes, even if you have not yet preordered Path of Fire. That makes this weekend the perfect opportunity to decide whether it’s something you want to buy or skip. Are you giving it a go?

I would go as far as to say that they are the best mounts in an MMO as far as use goes. They aren’t just a run speed increase, like say FFXIV. They have weight, acceleration, and mechanical uses throughout the world. Funny how a game that I thought didn’t need mounts at first turns out to have the best use of them and make them purposeful.

I wonder if anyone else had trouble finding how to even play the damn thing…I logged in with a low level I’m playing…nothing. Logged in with an 80…nothing. Checked the official posts and forums…nothing.

Finally found a post on Reddit or a third-party forum site or somewhere, I don’t remember, turns out you have to click on the tiny Create DEMO button on the char select screen…you think they would have made a giant blazing button screaming it’s availability to the heavens, or at least put 2 sentences explaining how to access it on their official post…

So you really didn’t read the message on the dead center of the char selection screen, when you launch the game, saying to choose one of the added free char slots with a ribbon in bright pink saying “demo” over it, you have to click away first?!

Sure… -.-

I was pleasantly surprised I was able to straight up walk to a hero point and complete it solo. And find two Mastery points without constant map flipping and dulfy videos.

So far the zone and enemy design hasn’t made me log off in frustration, so props there. We’ll see how the new elite specs shake out next go round.

Was worried about just having a giant desert map that we’d have to slog through. Really like the Egyptian aesthetic of the zone that we’re able to access thus far. Mount feels great as well.

K yeah. the mounts alone sell this expansion for me. The raptor feels /so much better/ than waypoints.

I could see myself just ignoring the actual content and poking around the world with my raptor for hours

Don’t really like previews. Still going to wait a month after the expansion launch’s to see how players feel about it. Not going to get on the hype train.

Ogres got one hell of a revamp (at least in Elona)! o.O

I always felt that race was rushed creating it, compared to all the other ones!

Logged in. I played a lot 2+ years ago. What I expected. Gorgeous to look at but lost any will to continue playing after 15 minutes.

Patched up and logged in briefly, will probably try this weekend. GW2 is one that’s nice to go back to for visits
