PSA: Guild Wars 2’s mounts may be causing motion sickness issues

Longtime readers will know that we take motion sickness from games pretty darn seriously around here, given that we have a writer who’s been severely affected by some of the VR demos we’ve sent him to. So don’t read any judgment into this PSA: Multiple Guild Wars 2 testers participating in the Path of Fire preview weekend are reporting that they’re experiencing motion sickness, sometimes severe, while dealing with the game’s brand-new mount system, specifically because of the camera.

ArenaNet has apologized and said that the mounts team recommends lowering visual blur in the short-term as “they feel it may help with this problem.” Another user prone to motion sickness suggested a whole range of settings that are making mounts (or at least the demo raptor mount) usable for him.

“Weโ€™d love to hear from you if this adjustment is effective,” ANet’s Gaile Gray wrote. “Team members who have worked/are working on the mounts will be tracking this feedback!”

I’ve been super bogged down and didn’t get to write back when the weekend was in full swing, but I definitely suffered this weekend and the mount animation did trigger my motion sickness, which I totally admit is easy to do in my case. :(

I use ginger for motion sickness for Eve Valkyrie that I get once in a while. This might help.

Consider me now a bit concerned. I didn’t try out the preview as I like to avoid doing that anymore. Since as I’ve mentioned numerous times here on MassivelyOp that since getting older I do now suffer from nausea from some of these motions, and that it makes most of those games unplayable for me. :/

Why I’m not playing SWL when I played the hell out of TSW. Or why I don’t play DDO or have a hard time with EDO. Why I won’t be playing Crowfall and why I don’t play FPS’s. (sigh) Getting old sucks, just saying. I can’t imagine repelling out of helicopters now or being on high elevations looking down anymore.

You should participate in the free limited weekend preview so that you can allay any concerns you would have with the mount. It’s the only way to be sure.

Btw I just tried the demo. Sadly as I thought, the demo is going to make me have to go through the content before I can get to the part where the whole mount thing is. Which is something I don’t want to do.

I did the first part which took me to the small town and decided right there that I was done because I don’t want to play through the content. To me, mmorpgs are about the journey and not the destination so much though I’ve done my share of end content in mmorpgs, raiding etc.

Anyhow since I’m not sure how much of the new content I’d have to do before getting to the raptor style mount I logged out. Honestly it’s only $80.00 bucks so I’ll end up getting it regardless because I believe in supporting mmorpg developers that make the games I play. So if the raptor ends up being undoable for me like the WoW raptor and mechastrider I’ll be fine, I just won’t use that raptor.

you were almost to the point that you’d have been able to boot around on a raptor. after clearing the town of bad doods, you get to run around on one to save people with, and then are given a permanent one.

from what i can gather tho, the likely causes seem to be:
> the camera zooms out a bit when you mount, and in when you dismount.
> the raptor can’t strafe, and takes fairly wide turns
> there’s a bit of inertia in both the raptor’s and camera’s movement.
> your character bounces around a lot on top of the mount

the issue’s a very personal thing, so it’s hard to say if any of that will impact you until you try it out. (#1 can be mitigated by zooming out, and i assume skimmer’s won’t bounce so much, so the middle ones are going to be the main concern, imo)

Thanks for the reply. Figures I was close and didn’t know it. I was thinking that my luck would have been that the raptor would have been the second or third mount. So I’d have to experience a lot more of the content than I wanted to before the release of the expansion.

I’m reading the turning off motion blur and keeping zoomed out are two biggies for reducing the motion sickness. I’m hoping I’ll get lucky. heh.

I’m soo torn on doing that because if it does cause motion sickness for me, we’re talking hours of feeling like crap and doing nothing but laying down and closing my eyes. If the one mount moves like WoW’s raptor mount then I’m hosed. I can’t use the raptor mounts or mechastriders for that matter in WoW at all due to the way it makes me feel.

As it is I’m a bit under the weather so I didn’t go for my long motorcycle ride I was supposed to go on today and I don’t want this to make me feel even worse. Damned if I do or don’t in this scenario. Btw love the Speedracer avatar picture. :)

I’ve had this from just a few different games over the years, and it’s always been because of resolution and/or perspective issues. It’s certainly a funny business, that’s for sure.

Ah well, at least that is one benefit to having a low end pc. I cannot even enable features like that.

That sucks that some people are having issues. I hope ANet is able to get it fixed so that everyone is happy. I hope those who were interested in PoF give ANet a chance to fix the issue rather than just writing it off. Remember it hasn’t been released yet. Hopefully it’s just a matter of adding a camera motion option in the options menu.

Heh, Playstation 1 and Nintendo 64 gave me motion sickness as well, imagine what would have happened to video-game development if people stopped playing video-games from a little vertigo.

Hatchet job is obviously a hatchet job.

Motion blur? Ugh. Games need to stop with that crap, it adds a huge performance hit and it never looks good.

Siphaed

Except it doesn’t. The tech has come along way in the past 10 years. It’s near perfect in this game. The only “performance” issue come across is mounts getting snagged on a 1in jump up a stair.

Enjoyed the Raptor mount immensely. The feel of the mount has meaty heft and weight, with animations giving it life and breath, much like a few console games. The racing event is a blast. And no ill effects of motion sickness. Sorry to hear others are having issues. But I’m definitely looking forward to the other mounts, like the Skimmer.

Although the sneak-peek preview weekend content is primarily restricted to the vast city of Amnoon and the Crystal Oasis, I suspect this beautiful city will become home for a few stalwarts, who shamelessly venture into the unknown of the Crystal Desert (and future content.) Plenty of nice touches to the city, making it come alive. And exploring the rooftops of the cityscape (with a Raptor mount even) and meeting shady characters in unlikely places really cinch the fun for me, among other things. I’m more than ready to see what the rest of the expansion has to offer.

This is not good news for myself. When Guild Wars 2 first came out it gave me massive motion sickness. It’s the only game that has. I’ve tried all sorts of settings and can’t stop it, it’s something to do with how the camera swings when the character moves. I try it every so often hoping they’ve fixed it because I liked the game, and I’ve discussed it with support multiple times and they kept saying they have other players eith the same issue and there’s a fix coming but it never materialized. Had hoped this expack would be the fix, guess not ๐Ÿ™

I’m guessing you’re bothered by camera smoothing. Is there no way to disable that?

Tried it and …..meh. Thankfully no motion sickness, but I loathe the way at least the raptor mount controls/moves. Can’t say the other bit of content was super engaging either. Hopefully the new weapon will be good (guardian) at least, because otherwise it’s looking like PoF is going to be a solid “pass” for me, at least until it goes on sale after launch.

Damn shame, because so far that first zone/city look gorgeous.

Yeah, the mounts saved me some money. It seems to me they are just mobile excuses for jumping puzzles. :-( :-) I recently got my first toon to 20 and GW2 was interesting enough I want to continue. Although I bought the game in the before times, Anet wants $50 before I am allowed to buy a bag for 21c off the trading post which doesn’t sit well with me. So I could spend $140 ($99 package+HoT+starter kit) but I hope I can go with the Steamification of gaming. I know that now is absolutely the most expensive time to buy the game and it will be much cheaper later. If ANet will pay me $50-100 to wait, might as well wait.

Incorrect info. It’s $99 for the HoT with PoF

Reader

It’s $50, here’s a helpful link that shows Path of Fire in a shopping cart with an option in a green rectangle to buy Heart of Thorns for $20.

Pesky facts.

Here….here’s the breakdown… (mutters something about kids)

Edit: On topic, the motion sickness has me concerned as an aside. Since you all know from my various posts that I feel that effect. Makes me unsure as to whether I’ll buy PoF now. :/

Agree. Despite my overall disinterest, I gave it a try. Once past the opening sequence, ran a couple of mount races. The raptor does move quite a bit from side to side.

I also found the content meh. Might get it if it’s on sale one of these days, but also a solid pass for me.

when I first got my PSVR I would get motion sickness and fought through it, now I get none…. guess it helps coming from a tougher generation.

Explain “tougher generation”. ;p Or define what you mean by that.

Those are good points but your links Ernost are related to ancestors and not recent current generations. Modern vs ancient is indeed a large difference. Kimowar101 is alluding to current living generations.

Your ignorance is running rampant. I get motion sick now a days because I’m old. ;p So again, what do you mean by “tougher generation”. I’m a military vet, retired etc. As you get older your body no longer functions as it once did.

Ok, then we’re similar and I misunderstood your points. Btw I don’t get better, the doctors tell me that as you get older the fluids in your inner ear harden a bit and aren’t as well…fluid. Things I used to do I wouldn’t dare do these days, like repel out of Crash Hawks, because I’d get vertigo.

Edit: btw I wasn’t truly offended, I was calling out bullshit when I see bullshit. Which I’ve always done.

Providing a bad experience that customers will eventually accept is not an uncommon business strategy from gaming companies.

Reader
Sajiri

Man, that doesnt feel fun. I’ve never experienced motion sickness in games (luckily) and the motion sickness I get these days is nowhere near as severe as it was when I was a kid, but now I’m both hesitant to try the mounts and strangely curious about it…I just kinda wanna know if it will affect me, but at the same time I dont wanna go through feeling sick again >_>

Reader
Coldin Torrence

Not too surprising. I remember LOTROs mounts giving people motion sickness too. In this case, I think it’s partly because they make the camera sorta loosely follow the motion of the mount. And you can’t really side strafe on mounts either. Not sure if it’s something really fixable.

Reader
Utakata

Those mounts don’t make motion sickness, no siree! And that bumpy filtering business will even puts hairs of your pigtai…

*Bluuaaagh!*

…eww, what’s that all over my keyboard? :(

Reader
Dug From The Earth

Gee, devs, imagine that. Adding in a fake visual element that so many designers think simulates vision in real life… and it makes people sick.

This is why ALL games need options to disable things like this. Motion blur, bloom, depth of field, etc etc. At least GW2 has FoV options.

deekay_plus

visual blur. the kind of shit i turn off in my video editor adn video games that game devs love to add as a default for some bizarre reason. :S

Reader

Everything about the demo has been great. Zero issues with motion. I mean, its a 3d video game with motion…there is only so much developers can do to try and accommodate every person’s issues.

Reader
Arktouros

Had no issues here. Getting my VR Legs I feel rock solid for these kinds of things.

The mount animations are fantastic though for the Raptor. I was initially unimpressed by it, but after putting my hands on it and playing with it was very happy and natural. Going to feel awkward I think going back to content without mounts similar to Gliding however.

Reader

Apparently we’ll be able to use mounts anywhere after release.

I’m already hitting the mount key when I’m out of the demo and reminding myself I can’t use it yet.
