I am even more convinced than last week that this is a train wreck, but one which could possibly and allegedly line the pockets of Mr and Mrs Roberts to see them out for life.

It just keeps getting pushed further into the distance whilst they keep doing more and more ship sales to keep the money coming in to pay the staff and then some ;)

That there is no word on SC 42 is even more compelling. They have to have something core that they are working on and able to demonstrate properly – not gimmicks like facial expressions. How much time did that waste when it was not necessary, at least until full blown launch. As a programmer that speaks volumes to me – you do shit like that when you can’t stand to go near what you really should be doing, the main project. I think they are totally lost and out of their depth.

It’s not any sense of irrational hatred (I love the idea of the game) but my experience and intuition telling me that what is going to happen is about three more ship sales down the line (in about a year) people will start to call bullshit on this in bigger numbers, he will start cutting staff and the project will be put into voluntary bankruptcy. If there was somewhere I could place a bet on this I would do so right now, with the expectation of making a return on my bet.

Quote Kevin McCaughey:”my experience and intuition telling me… people will start to call bullshit on this in bigger numbers”

I suggest you remove intuition but keep experience (if you have IRL experience with big project management in International companies) add facts and numbers and your guess will be as close from an “educated guess” as possible.

3.0 is coming…in weeks… or a couple of months (70 bugs remaining). This is a major and massive patch as it solidified the complex core tech for planets/moons as well together with 41 screen pages of features… and delta patcher :)
Game engine and pipelines are uptodate, the team reached a size (+428) and experience which allow to focus on many tasks.
After 3.0, only 4 remaining patch to reach Beta: 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.0.

Those patch are going to add jobs like mining, salvaging, repairing, escort… together with dedicated ships (or loaner)… and more planets and systems. By end of 2018 we will have a much clearer view on how fast CIG as delivered from the strong technology fundation that is 3.0… How many jobs adding more various gameplay, how many new planets/systems…

About Finance, CIG is not at risk, as per my own Finance estimation (that anyone can dispute of course as long they do not use dices roll) , they should have around a bit more than a year of cash ahead, SQ42 Chapter 1 coming probably my mid-2018 (of course to be confirmed) and new backers going to join at each major patch as many are interested by different aspect of SC.

Based on my experience… the future is not dark but bright :)

You sound desperate to me. I am almost scared to ask how many imaginary ships you have bought. Sounds like you are heavily invested in this.

Reader
Joe Blobers

Quote Kevin: “You sound desperate to me”

In fact the very opposite. Amazed by demo and upcoming release :) Thanks for caring.
About pledges I have never recommended anyone to pledge more than a strater package.
Everyone is responsible of his own wallet and those looking to provide further support can also do it by becoming a Subscriber. This is an elegant way to support while keeping the pleasure to purchase more with in game credit.

Reader
Kevin McCaughey

Go on, how many imaginary ships have you bought? Be honest now :)

Reader
Joe Blobers

Quote Kevin:”how many imaginary ships”.

Call Hornet imaginary if you want. Can be flight in current available modules like Arena Commander and Persistent Universe. Pretty much satisfy.

Beside that your question is not relevant to the game status. I could spend 50$ like 50K it would be my business… and probably my curse as well :)
From time to time there are still a few that bring the pledge level on the table. That have no sense as those able to spend thousands on a dematerialized asset are not necessarily the most vocal…. their relationship to money is not welded to date but to a project.

Few are Completionist… I respect that, they do whatever they want with their cash.
Personaly I would be interested to spend that level of $ but as a share holder not backer :)
I suggest you to leave alone that legend of $=fanboy. That is an old joke that blends well with vaporware :)

Reader
Kevin McCaughey

In other words, you have bought into this in a big way and it would shatter you if it failed. I don’t think we can trust your judgement on this. I have spent nothing on it and would like it to work out, but there are just too many serious warning signs for me to believe this will be so. Looks like it will blow up in about 3 imaginary ship sales from now, to me.

Reader
Joe Blobers

Quote Kevin:”In other words, you have bought into this in a big way and it would shatter you if it failed.”

You know that readers can see what I wrote right? Keep putting words in “people” mouth if you think that serve your ranting… unfortunately in others word… I said the exact opposite :)

Yes… blow up in next something… like this +600.000 backers project was sure collapsing every single 90 days since 2015! :)

Who didn’t cringe a lot during the presentation? The role play was a great way to demonstrate the new tech but presentation was poorly organized.. again. Doing it live has never worked well for Chris but it certainly shows that it’s real. My biggest disappointment from GamesCom was discerning from the interviews, the fact that 1 to 2 more years will be added to development before official launch, taking us into 2021, possibly 2022.

The tech they showed was awesome. FaceWare technology wasn’t necessary but it vastly increases the immersion and game play control level. The facial expressions were neat but to me, having native Track IR (VR style headset tracking) with a camera is the game changer. You won’t need a mouse to look around and you won’t need any expensive equipment setup. Just a small camera on your monitor. The impact this makes can’t be understated.

The realm, Mobiglas, character customization, spacial VoIP sound features and big ship fights were cool and all but we still haven’t seen Squadron 42. Let’s hope it shows up at Citizen Con. Chris had some guts out there. Even with all the screw ups, that whole dev group showed passion and determination in getting through it. Something that shows me see they believe in the project.

Plenty of hiccups but plenty promising content as well… Mel, you did that on purpose.

After watching that stream I cannot fathom how anyone believes this project will ever see a complete release. The bits and pieces are cool (there’s a dope game in there somewhere), but I’m just not understanding how a patch that was promised in December of last year is so behind the curve that someone crashing out of a demo requires the whole thing to be rebooted from scratch.

And the face tech???? Neat? It really sticks out as another example of rando features being thrown into the pot while the foundation remains unfinished.

Perhaps the biggest thing for me was like…no new date for 3.0? Not even a range? You’re almost a year late and you can’t commit to like….winter?

The Idris is sick, the fidelity is off the charts (if they can solve for frame rate), but I don’t have a lot of hope that these pieces will ever be assembled as-promised. Looks a lot like the Freelancer story, only this time there’s no one around to fire Chris Roberts.

Edit: I want to make clear that I really, really hope SC releases and is everything backers hope it to be. I’m just way beyond skeptical at this point.

It’s not. This went from “making a game” to “making money”, a long time ago.

I am currently working on a follow-up article to my previous (updated) GC2017 one, about how this GC2017, if nothing else, shows that the project is really FUBAR.

I already knew this was going to be horrible because sources have been telling me that for months now, as it pertains to 3.0; but aside from the Faceware scope creep, I really didn’t expect it to be this bad tbh. Will post a link to the article when it’s completed by Monday hopefully.

As to the schedule, they removed dates two weeks ago. And as per yesterday’s update, the release aim date is now in early Oct (from Sept). Which means they are probably shooting to release it on or before CitizenCon which takes place in Oct.

To bad you CAN’T do either (IE make a working game OR make any real money.)

Reader
Utakata

Developers make games to make money. You are guilty of this as anyone else is in this industry, Mr. Smart.

Reader
Roger Melly

I suppose though when the focus becomes more on making money than developing and actual polished product for release you have to admit the practices of a such a company are questionable to say the least .

Reader
Utakata

It doesn’t matter whether I feel or believe the principal of the thing is questionable or not…or even if it uses questionable means to achieve that goal. The bottom line of making games to make money still remains the same. I really see it no differently here.

DS we do not need to have advice from a proven incompetent like you …. Seamless space to planets decades away… Idris will never be flyable… :)

And your so called breaking news… you feel more lost in your inception at every quarter. Did you ask a CIG iD card to your source? :)

Post a link Monday, I have another one to share to Readers passing by. Everybody else already know you :)

Reader
Roger Melly

The way things are going with the delays in Star Citizen’s development and the lack of a release of Squadron 42 it’s quite possible at the end of the day Derek Smart will be proven right all along .

Reader
Joe Blobers

Roger Melly the way things are going is that current 3.0 do have more features and is more polished than what we saw last year and coming in few weeks. Levsky, vista, Idris, FaceWatch…. call that lack of release if you want (yes in few weeks not in June… so what)

The day you stop comparing multi-billions $ company with thousands of devs, with uptodate game engine and pipelines to a 12 guys company with 6 M$ 5 years ago…. may be you will start to realize that 3.0 is a major step forward for PC gamers and amazing… others patch are going to be delivered along 2018.

Let DS rest in peace… He was, is and still be a total incompetent and hater forever based on this non-stop toxic behavior. Be careful… birds of a feather flock together. Do not translate your frustration in something even worst. That won’t bring you nothing good… look at DS :)

Reader
Armsman

What? You mean because of the Alp[ha 2.6.3 that’s running and playable now, or the upcoming Alpha 3.0 that will most likely be released in 1 to 3 months.

The only thing that will be proven about Derek Smart at the end of all this is:

1) He’s really not anyone who should be listened to with regards to any modern PC game development because he doesn’t know anything about current practices.

2) If Twitter folded he’d have nothing to do all day.

Reader
Joe Blobers

Mike Foster the 3.0 have a burndown video end of each week that give a view of current status of remaining bugs. Benefit is that backers can see progress without giving date. With 70 bugs remaining… this is not years away but weeks away.

It almost sounds to me like they’re trying to release the game and all it’s expansions at once as the final product, instead of focusing on and then releasing just the base playable game. I mean it took EVE Online took 17 years to get where they are now with all it’s features and stuff. Can’t CiG make this product for the long hall instead and slowly add the bells and whistles overtime? o.O

Reader

Because then the free money party is over.

Adding more and more features that were never promised is a common way to push projects out. I can personally attest that it works pretty well if your customers are distracted by shinies and candy and are willing to extend your schedule and budget – if they’re not, and demand the extra shinies for the same time and money, you’re screwed, but SC backers seem to be willing to be strung along indefinitely.

And it’s a lot more fun for the devs. Adding new stuff is way more fun than fixing bugs or fundamental design issues.

The easiest way is to simply not pay any attention until you hear the words “Release” or “Soft Launch” (IE: No more wipes) or something similar. Everything else is just hyped up noise to get you to part ways with your money.

If they want to take whatever time to release the game that’s fine, go feature crazy. Take 10 years to develop it. Go nuts. I just won’t be spending a dime or my time until I hear those magic words.

oh nice damn. when did the show finish cus i thought it would of been accessible via twitch at least by now?

Just watched the little face ware segment, i thought it was pretty cool basically having Track IR coupled with the facial movement stuff in. Itll be good to see players interacting with other players but if the other players dont really have a great range of movement then i think it might detract from the experience. watching the stream now it makes sense now why they have the different selection for different run speeds like walk, moving faster, moving faster, jogging, running , sprinting, all that tied to like your heart rate which in turn is tied to stamina. if you go the gym youll know a steady pace you can run with consatantly is slower than sprint mode but its potential for covering much larger distances than free running than either walk or sprint like most games use.

impressed.

Reader
primal

it was awesome, the only thing i didnt like was it lagged when the other idris should have blown up, all the damage hit points will get changed later on, if it was 1 pilot controlling the idris fair enough but when you potentially 60 players on board it, would be stupid cus theres no time to fix anything.

And isn’t SC supposed to support VR? How is this new tech going to work with goggles strapped to your face?

Reader

dcmonkey you can support a tech like VR and offer a much affordable alternative for those having already a webcam. Check review on Youtube about trackIR… this is must have in “simulation” (car, plane, space ship, FPS)

I’ll make a quick prediction before the stream starts.

CR will make a few jokes about how buggy the game on the floor is, will end up saying something along the lines of “but that’s the nature of working on something that’s new”

Another concept demo or whatever you call it, where it will look really cool like it always does, but you won’t really see it for a long time in the hand of the people who paid for the development, if ever.

Definitely new ships! And sales to accompany them!

Uhh, let me guess….a bunch of staged videos in closed environments, a few still shots of new features isolated from any other game systems, nothing about connecting all the bits and parts in a homogeneous product, nothing about performance, nothing about missed deadlines, a lot of ultra hyped amazingballs new features that we promise, pretty pretty promise that we are going to do soon, definetly, we swear it..and a new batch of jpegs, sorry I mean “ships” for sale
