MMO Week in Review: Turning heads in Star Citizen, literally (August 27, 2017)

Were you too busy gaming this week to pay attention to MMO news? Get caught up every Sunday evening with Massively Overpowered’s Week in Review!

Star Citizen stole the show — Gamescom, that is — with reveal after reveal during its week of demoing a version of the long-delayed 3.0 alpha. While the SOEmote-esque real-time facial animation and camera locking captured most of the attention, CIG also let slip that it’s planning some detailed survival mechanics for the game, like eating and bathing.

Meanwhile, SkySaga announced a de facto shutdown, Guild Wars 2 completed another preview weekend, Star Wars: The Old Republic launched Crisis on Umbara, and World of Warcraft geared up for this week’s Argus release.

And we’re wishing all the best to our friends and readers suffering in Texas this weekend.

Read on for the very best of this week’s MMO news and opinions.

“CIG also let slip that it’s planning some detailed survival mechanics for the game, like eating and bathing.”
Of course they’re adding that.

Is there a gaming meme that drifts by that they don’t appropriate and insist it’s been part of their plan all along (meanwhile pushing out that release date just a little bit longer…)?

“Star Citizen stole the show” wow I hope you are kidding, what I saw was a buggy alpha mess with badly scripted game play, some embarrassing streamers with some added EQ2 facial eye candy to generate sales.

If it was a cut down version of 3.0, and that is true then if a full 3.0 patch lands this year with all the features as stated then it will be a miracle.

Interesting that in a chat with some of the SC dev team on the flight back from Cologne, 3.0 might get pushed back again.

Oh well, seems that was right then. Now, I wonder if what they told me about mining will be true as well. lol

Deekay said theyve admitted the main delay with it is the delta patcher. if you look at the production schedule everything is estimated to be done around the start of september except character customisation which is just something theyll do to fill in the time till the delta patcher is working properly and use the extra time to do some optimisations and well bug fixing.

yep that was one of the big things in teh presentation is that CR straight up admitted that the delta patcher is what’s holding the whole thing back.

something they should’ve told us weeks ago but finally doing so was a good thing overall.

And also: MassivelyOP is behaving like I’m accessing it on a dial-up. And I am presuming it’s not my end, ’cause all other online stuff is working fine for me. :(

Face mapping is how things should be. I loved it in EQ2 and I applaud it in SC.

Posted my comment on the facial mapping tech earlier. They made over a million in pledges over the weekend. It will slow at some point soon but for now, Jiffy Pop comes in too many flavors. Which one do you want?
