The Daily Grind: What wishful-thinking PAX West MMORPG announcement would blow you away?

Massively OP’s MJ Guthrie is at PAX West (formerly known as PAX Prime, a much catchier name if you ask me!) for us this weekend as it kicks off today, accompanied by a huge roster of stuff to see, from Ashes of Creation and Ship of Heroes to Chronicles of Elyria and Dual Universe — and a dozen more. She might get to eat lunch, but she will definitely not get to sit down!

The good news is that the con is gearing up for a much better showing for MMORPGs than we’ve had in the past two or three years, something that ought to fill you with cheer. On the other hand, what I’d like above all else is to be getting major MMORPG announcements — new AAAs, new expansions — in addition to these solid in-progress games that actually have the PR prowess and cash to show up (which is good too!). It’s a changing landscape out there, folks!

What PAX West announcement would blow you away? What would you most want to see? And of the games in attendance, what do you most want us to see and ask about for you?

(That map, by the way, can be checked out in full via pdf on the PAX website. Checkit: Ashes’ and ARK’s booths are as big as Bethsoft’s.

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

The aesthetic of the KoA reminded me of GW1. Would love an MMO.

Things that would blow me away:

1) SW:TOR is shutting down – piss poor performance and inevitable tailoff is resulting in EA shutting the game down. Whilst this is obviously bad news for existing players, it would open the way for a new SW MMO – hopefully timed for just after Ep 9 and aiming to be SWG 2.0

2) Amazon giving us concrete details about New World and it actually being an MMO – I have some lingering doubts that New World won’t actually be an MMO, just another survival game. It would be awesome to find out more and for the game to actually be an MMO.

3) Someone announces a AAA Warhammer 40k MMO – preferably it will have already been in development for 3 years, is now about to enter beta testing, with a release date in 2018. And for it to actually look like a good game….

4) Rockstar announces a GTA MMO – like GTA online, just, you know, an actual MMO, without the 32 player cap on each instance and without being a glorified lobby game. They could do some awesome things with the IP and they must have one of the best financial positions in the world.

5) Turbine announces legacy servers for LotRO – the first 6 months of LotRO are probably my happiest in gaming history. Group focused, difficult content, skill more important than gear, relatively good pvp balance…..I would resubscribe to a pre-moria legacy server.

6) Announcement of a Raymond E Feist / Riftwar MMO – my favourite author and series of books so would love to be able to explore the world in an MMO format.

7) Financial analysts announce the end of free to play – yeh, pipedream I know, but I’d love some financial analyst to announce that they’ve been studying the figures from all the major developers and have concluded that F2P is actually a worse business model for the West in the long run.

I would also like a new Star Wars MMO as the outdated look and gameplay of SWTOR is what usually keeps me from returning to it. I don’t see why it would have to be shut down in order to facilitate work on a new MMO, there are several unrevealed Star Wars projects currently being worked on at EA so it’s possible a new MMO could be one.
I also don’t think GTA would make a stand-alone MMO at the moment because they are making an absurd amount of money off of GTA:V at the moment. Maybe RDR2 or GTA:VI will have true MMOs incorporated.

I know they don’t have a booth there but the MMORPG announcement I am most anticipating (or hoping for anyway) is Paradox announcing a new World of Darkness MMO.

That all the stupid market-dividing-when-there-was-apparently-not-a-viable-market-to-start-with superhero games trying to resurrect/improve on City of Heroes would grow up, get their crap together and form a single firm.

Look, guys: I understand, you want to follow your own vision. I do. But when Cryptic couldn’t keep the doors open on ONE decent superhero game, and there are already a couple of (imo not-very-satisfying others) limping along in the market place, your “vision” coming to life and then starving to death immediately isn’t going to help you or the market place at all.

Oh, and Cryptic growing up and releasing their CoH code as open source. If it wasn’t viable before as a commercial concern, let it out already.

Oh, and SC providing a release date.

I do not believe it shut down for not being viable, but because the subsidiary which owned it, NC Interactive, was being shut down, and the Paragon team, which was trying to buy the game from NC Interactive, failed to complete negotiations before the “must be shut down by” date.

Massively’s 2012 article. (Wow, talk about wayback machine)

My thoughts exactly. If they announced New World coming early 2018 I’d be amazed. The only other thing that would shock me is Chris Roberts announcing they were lying to everyone this whole time and Star Citizen is “Launching” in a week. I’d immediately call an ambulance to be sent over to D. Smart’s house because of the heart attack he would have.

New World began development last year. It is not likely to be out until 2021 *at the earliest* based on typical MMO development times.

Vaguely maybe technically theoretically possible in the future: Warframe’s Plains of Eidolon (and subsequent ‘open world maps’) getting a version that is actually genuinely open world. I.e. with more than one squad in the same environment, maybe teaming up to hunt Eidolons after dark, or showing each other some juicy fishing spots (ha).

Maybe you can ask that question while you’re there :) I think the DE booth is #233?

Impossible pipe-dream: Funcom does something with AO that isn’t just to shut it down. A response to a 2-week CS email would be a nice start. I miss my Main…

Reader

I think as far as AO is concerned it suffers from the TSW problem of being too complex. Funcom just wants quick bucks now and they are being rewarded for the change in direction, at least according to their financial announcements. FC made more money last quarter than in the history of their company, or so they said. It would be too hard and costly for them to make a real successor to AO. Now maybe if you suggested a relaunch of AO with lock boxes, pared down missions and a simplified play field…hey that might get their attention.

Reader
Zen Dadaist

Ahhh that magic word. Lockboxes. This is why SWL has not touched my HDDs. Should an AO relaunch happen with it getting the SWL treatment, it would not touch my HDDs either.

But, sadly, this is indeed the case. Simple, fast games like CE and SWL are what’s caught the public attention. So, it’s what they are chasing now. TSW is being hurried to its closure, and AoC and AO have been thrown to the sploiters (found out one of my own fucking orgmates has joined the sploits train “because everyone else is doing it” – am I the last sodding player on Rubi Ka who refuses to partake in the cheating bullshit???). Hence the Impossible pipe-dream designation!

That someone is making a sci-fi game, that you don’t have to be stuck in a ship to play and you don’t have to be under 22 to enjoy playing, and you will be able to use your brain sometime instead of exclusively the firing buttons…..

Would love it conceptually but honestly, I don’t trust his creative control anymore.
Since he “made it big” with the Avengers (very well could have been his divorce too), he’s gone more than a little bit insane and I don’t mean that in a creatively good way.

Cabin in the Woods was pretty decent, and Much Ado About Nothing was underwhelming, certainly less than it could have been given the talent in the room. No, his last intrinsically successful product was Dr Horrible.

LotRO getting a massive modernization, including a graphics and animations overhaul, tweaking combat mechanics for deeper tactical options, all the while maintaining the general character – especially the relaxed pacing – of the game. Throw in lore-conform housing options à la Wildstar, and some high-profile authors volunteering to support the staff writing some quests and stories (I’m thinking Tad Williams or George Martin here – provided the latter gives a damn)…

Announce that, and I’ll tell RL to go float itself until the Trump Era is a thing of a distant past…

considering we saw how unfun it was going to be with landmark.

the design outline sounded awesome, but smed and co could make piles of shit sound awesome long before delivering steaming piles of shit.

which there’s not a doubt in my mind long before eqn was officially canceled that it was as bad as landmark was at that point.
