‘Yes, you can transmute any weapon or armor’ in Elder Scrolls Online’s Clockwork City DLC

One of the most intriguing bits of news to emerge in The Elder Scrolls Online’s Clockwork City DLC preview yesterday was the details behind the brand-new transmutation system. As ZeniMax wrote, the system will allow players to “change the traits on [their] gear, including weapons and armors,” in exchange for a new resource called transmutation crystals, which you can earn through veteran level content (trials and veteran dungeons are listed as examples).

In response to a zillion confused tweets and comments, ZeniMax has since clarified the way the system works. “We’re getting many great questions about the upcoming Transmutation system,” the studio tweeted. “Yes, you can transmute any weapon or armor.” According to the tweets, you’ll be able to transmute non-crafted sets, veteran Maelstrom and Dragonstar arena gear, and… well, everything is everything.

“‘Transmute’ will be the #ESO term for the re-traiting system (different from the transmogrify system we’re working on.)”

What about the transmogrify system? How will it work? Any eta on it?

This is a good thing, but after thinking about it why not take out the RNG of boss loot drops and just give players tokens to then exchange for the gear they want?

Wow… ESO surprised me here. I played for a long time (only stopped my sub about 2 months ago.) I left for multiple reasons, the need for this “transmutation system” being one of them. I hated farming the same dungeon over and over and over and over and over and over just to get the exact weapon, for the exact set, with the exact trait I needed… x 5.

Math wizards calculated that for each piece, the average number of times you would need to run a dungeon was just under 300 times. It was technically possible to get it on your first 10 runs, but its highly unlikely. Most players were like me, running the same dungeon for the 100th + time, still hoping to get the trait they wanted on the item and set they wanted.

Why did I think they would never “fix/add” this system? Simple. Its the ONLY reason to repeat content in ESO. There is no vertical gear scaling. Once you get the set you want, with the traits you want, there is NO reason to ever run another dungeon or raid again. Even new dungeons/raids. (unless the new sets for those, become the new meta for your build.. which is very rare.)

Its going to be interesting to see how this effects the games end game longevity for players now. I wonder how frequently you can get a crystal to transmute with. I cant imagine its a 100% chance every vet dungeon run. People wouldnt know what to do with all their free time.

This feature has long since been needed. Good on them for finally adding it!

70% of my frustration playing this game was the endless PvE grind for a literal 0.3% chance of getting the right item in the right set with the right trait.

Changing the look would be solid too.

Yes you can transmorph (Power Rangers GO!) a trait onto ANY weapons or armor, but ONLY if you do group activities like trials and dungeons.. once again the solo players get the shaft. Not impressed ESO.. Developers shi**ing on more than half their audience in order to try and force people into group activities.

Heres an idea.. ACCEPT that will people will group IF and WHEN they want to, so stop trying to manipulate us with stupid design decisions.

So let me get this straight…you think that by allowing players the ability to change traits, Zenimax is forcing them into more group activities? Interesting “logic” there.

Let me explain it to you because CLEARLY you didn’t read before commenting and making yourself look stupid.

The transmorph system will ONLY work via a resource you can ONLY get from veteran rank Dungeons and trials neither of which is SOLOABLE.. so yes you can ONLY get them via group activities so in order to benefit from it obviously you HAVE to do group activities. And so ergo..if you want to change your traits you are FORCED to do group activities to get the necessary resource Its a fairly simple logic to follow and one which would not have been necessary to spell out had you actually read the announcement to begin with before responding to me with your smarmy response ;)

Well gee, crafted sets are sort of the lynchpin of the game for me…

Requires a reagent that drops only in veteran mode content (presumably arenas, dungeons, and trials). No word on whether the mat is BoP or tradeable.

If it can be traded, given the limited sources the price will be high enough that for ordinary BoE gear you certainly will be better off just crafting or buying it with the traits you want in the first place. But for the maelstrom weapons and maybe for gear you upgraded to legendary but now want to tweak for the new meta, maybe it will be worth the hassle.

It sounds like a reasonable compromise, since it at least gives you some (very costly) option to end the endless farm for a perfect drop, while also not (completely) wrecking the market for crafted gear with a variety of traits.

Yeah I’m not very impressed that this requires a resource that is ONLY available to those who do group activities, which is BEYOND lame considering how many people solo in ESO by preference.

My guess is we will see a purchaseable version of the resource in the Crown store like Mimic stones for crafting…that wouldn’t surprise me AT ALL.

Um… its the group activities that mostly suffered from the endless grind of random generated values that players hated.

If you craft your own gear (not a group task), you can pick the specific trait you put on it.

The system is largely to combat players who find themselves farming the same dungeon 300 times (ie: they are already doing a group activity) because they want a full set in light armor, with all the same trait on it, but only end up getting medium and heavy variants of the set, with traits no one cares about.

There are PLENTY of droppable sets you can get that DO NOT come from group activities in ESO that make this issue ENTIRELY relevant to soloers.

If you think soloers do not farm for gear you are mistaken they just don’t do it from group activities.

Surely there will be more ways to earn the crystals than through dungeon content…
