One Shots: I think I’m turning Japanese

I’ve got your picture of me and you
You wrote “I love you,” I love you too
I sit there staring and there’s nothing else to do

We’ve all been there when a “good” Japanese demon of legend has a legit crush on one of the leaders of the Illuminati. How else to express that unrequited love than with a commissioned painting and some headless mannequins?

“In honor of Secret World Legends’ Kristen Geary,” posted reader Koshelkin. This is exactly how court restraining orders get started.

Dang if Warframe doesn’t look so weird and cool at the same time. I still haven’t fully warmed up to the tenno suits, but it’s certainly a lot different than your standard sci-fi armor. Got that tinge of alien-ness to it. Here Kenji does a few sweet moves for your entertainment!

“Here I am goofing off in Second Life,” said Melissa.

A pose like this should be followed by a light show and then a startling transformation sequence into a super-powered cartoon hero. Also, the fish behind her gets co-starring credits.

“In Guild Wars 2’s livestream about mounts last Friday, they spoke about how their experiments with mounted combat felt too clunky, and that they didn’t want to overlap it too much with normal combat and its elite specs,” said Miol. “Yet they couldn’t help themselves to tease us since the first expansion with concept art depictions, cutscenes, and these mounted and spear throwing Mordrems!”

Camelotcrusade complains about a hated character in SWTOR: “Ugh, I know I’m going to egret re-posting this NPC. Just seeing him makes me think a fowl plot is afoot, and him holding a computer is a tern for the worse. I hope there isn’t another one around the corner, or this won’t be pheasant. Then we’ll have two birds stoned at once (or whatever tweaks your beak, as they say). Sorry for grousing, I’m just not used to this kind of tweetment. Owl see you later.”

We all know MMORPGs aren’t entirely divorced from real world influences, and in many cases thrive on those connections. For this week’s screenshot challenge, share a picture of a location or NPC that is a clear reference to a real-world country or culture.

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

The XCOM 2 expansion is out so I’ve been a tad preoccupied playing the role of commander again.
Thus instead of a lovely MMO screenshot all I have to share this week is some resistance propaganda.

Dropping the hammer in LOTRO. My crafting is nearly caught up to my level. Starting to make some pretty nice Light and Medium armor.

@challenge:

The Northern Wall was a barrier constructed several centuries ago to halt charr incursions into the heartland of the human-controlled Ascalon.

Sounds familiar?

You can choose for yourself, if it’s a reference to the Great Wall of China, Great Wall of Gorgan, Hadrian’s Wall, or any other wall that eventually failed their builders, given enough time (or to possible future walls, if someone doesn’t want to learn from history and thereby condemned to repeat it)! ;P

Uh, wait, how do I delete this? That’s definitely not me at the piano. I don’t know anything about this place. That garter was already on the bench, I was just trying to give it back. Yeah, that’s it…

It’s from a limited duration instance in EverQuest 2 two for some sort of event… the St. Patrick’s Day thing (Brewday? It’s been too long!). There was another stage with dancing male fey but sadly they didn’t get onto the piano with me!

Well it doesn’t get much less ambiguous than this STO image of my Vulcan captain taking in the views at Star Fleet Academy in San Francisco. It’s comforting to know that the almost 500 year-old Golden Gate Bridge remains the iconic image in a world city long considered a bastion of multi-cultural influences.

Nice! I can see it from my roof here in San Francisco. And on the right day, I’d probably see cat people, a ninja and a man in black, too. Give me a couple years on the flying car, though.

Since I have no pics this week, instead, I’ll perform a public service by linking the music video Justin is referencing in the title.

The song “Turning Japanese” by the English punk/new wave band, The Vapors, debuted in 1980.

For those who might be wondering, yes, the song was criticized as being culturally insensitive/racist even in its day.

When it was revealed (to those who didn’t already get it) that the song is actually about masturbation, that didn’t exactly help the controversy, either.

But, as we all know, controversy and a catchy tune played (very) fast helps sell music. The Vapors were never this big on the charts again, but hopefully, they invested their money wisely.

Also, there’s a cover version of this making the rounds on YouTube by none other than actress Kirsten Dunst. I prefer the original, but everybody has their own tastes.

Yeah her running around dressed like a Hentai character. The fact that it was directed by movie directer McG is funny. :P

it seemed to abe a fun and silly video. she’s about my age and i’ve been a fan of hers since interview if not the cheerleader movie. i feel bad that she’s always listed as best known for spiderman when that’s far from her best performance even for the time.

i think she went there and had fun with her fans there which like avril lavigne (whom i largely don’t care for) pandered to her fans there where she has a big audience.

idk between the age thing and certain other things i kind of relate to her as a person.

The real issue was she took too many cheesy roles and the other roles she took she wasn’t suited for and had a long list of movies that bombed like the spderman movies. She had the chance for more adult and serious movies but her family interfered.

yeah it’s a shame/ she’s a really really good actress, but picked alot of bad roles. still i love her non acting stuff.

destiny 2 “beta” has ruined the day time crew for playing anything but we did agree to do some silly funsies wpvp in gtao this past week which scared most of the session population to other sessions.

but not “thegreatangela” who drove right into the middle of our melee in her smexy hotrod to give me a ride closer to my buddy in his savage.

she would end up joining us in various vehicles after this short ride to help us massacre the police and gank other randoms still in the session.

Question Deekay, GTAO is one game I’ve really wanted to play, but haven’t been able to justify ponying up the $60 entry, + cash shop. So if you don’t mind I’d like to ask you:
1) Is it worth the $$ to enter?
2) How critical are cash shop purchases?

Thanks!

deekay_plus
Reader
deekay_plus

so for the tldr, so here’s the short version

1) there’s no better value on the market for $60 in terms of amount and variety of content and activities. this blow s away every themepark mmo out there for themepark style content and gets to teh nitty gritty of sandy gank box funsies without the punitive bullshit.

2) i’m the only one in my guild that buys shark cards at all, and everyone else has way more blingy shit than i do faster just playing regularly for a few weeks at a time. there’s some start up costs witht eh most profitable content in terms of gold per hour spent, but one can earn those start up costs fairly reasonably with actual gameplay.

alot of the blingiest shit is nothing more than bling compared to cheaper things as well.

it’s definitely worth the price of entry. there’s such a massive amount and variety of content in the game. i personally avoid all the “instanced”/”lobby” stuff nowadays and focus primarily on world content which the most profitable of which (which is most profitibl content in the game – and also the riskiest) each have fairly substantial start up costs to own your own, but can make good in game cash helping others out in their businesses.

so first off with regards to teh cash shop, you have to understand that the only moneitzation post box purchase is shark cards, which is eseentially buying gold. and while alot of the vehicles they add over time, plus the costs of starting up businesses in teh past year’s world focused dlc (CEO/motrocyucle club/gunrunning) are subsantial (VIP/yacht is a waste of money here and by far the most expensive), they are also highly profitable and there are ways to reduce the risks. CEO is probably the most solo friendly (primarily running crates), while MC is best attacked in groups of 2-4, and bunker is best with 3 or more people due to more dificult DLC. the most recent air plane focused one you wan tto be a very good pilot before you take it on as well.

so basically once you have a business up and running and making good cash even the most expensive cars and whatnot are pretty much pretty quick to earn the cash for them, and alot of the essential unlocks while you level up and learn things and earn cash for business investments are pretty trivial really. and despite what reddit may say the super expensive super cars and super bikes are far from necessary (tho i do recomend buying a karuma as soon as possible as it’s probably the base line for armoured cars – that being said most of the time we don’t even bother with armoured cars unless we feel like being silly).

and to give you an idea of teh speed of all that as a new player – recent ish new recruit we met doing world content (business stuff) started just a couple weeks prior with her husband and was quickly buying her own businesses within a few weeks of daily play with him and later us and earning the big bucks all without buying any shark cards and being pretty new to the game. which her husband isn’t very good at the game at all, but still plays with her sometimes to run business ops.

anyways, it’s not nearly as grindy or pushy on spending extra cash as people on reddit hate train claim. there is plenty of stuff to collect and spend money on, but unless you need all of the most blingy things as soo n as they come out but instead focus on those key items of interest to yourself and don’t demand it day 1 of deployment it’s honestly just a pretty chill game with a rather enjoyabkle gameplay route.

and there is weekly sales on certain things and cash and exp bonuses on select activities. and alot of new instanced activities added between the big world focused dlc’s.

honestly i’ve spent about $200cad on 4 shark cards in 3 years of playing and never felt particularly to buy a single one of them – i just wanted some blingy new thing and didn’t want to wait to farm the cash. but i’ve earned even more cash than i’ve bought playing a few days a week a few hours at a time not even focused entirely on my own grinding for 2-6 weeks at a time since the new world focused business DLCs started coming out. and even before that it wasn’t as bad as people claimed it was.

i would say it’s best with friends, as mp games tend to be, but we’ve found that generally people are pretty easy to make friends with and open to making friends alot of the time. just this year alone my group has met at least 4 to 6 people that add us to friends lists to play again later.

Thanks for the time you took to write that detailed reply. You are correct about the hate train complaining about the cash shop. I feel much more informed now. Thank you.

BTW, is it like one open server, or private servers, etc?

If all you want to do is explore the world, you can make an invite-only session for yourself and up to 31 other friends. You can’t do the fancy CEO missions in one, but all the “regular” jobs/races/etc. are available. If you like exploring a modern setting with cars, planes, and boats – with liberal quantities of bullets and explosions added in – it’s unquestionably worth the money.

It’s a remarkable game, and I’d never have even given it a look if not for MJ’s streams of it, as the single-player mode held no attraction to me whatsoever.

it’s largely up to 32 player oepn world p2p sessions, but not often you’ll get up that much and msaller sessions are preferable for business runs.
