Warframe’s Plains of Eidolon introduces ‘open landscapes’ later this year

During its livestream earlier this afternoon, Digital Extremes formally unveiled Plains of Eidolon, Warframe’s next big expansion. As announced back at TennoCon, the expansion will add a touch of MMOishness to the shooter.

“For the first time in Warframe history, Tenno will have the freedom to explore, fight, journey and fly through the open Landscapes – Warframe’s first Open Zone – of Planet Earth in their own time, in their own way. Stepping into the rolling Plains of Eidolon, players will experience a rich landscape populated with both familiar and never-before seen creatures, enemies, a new Warframe, stunning vistas lit with a day/night cycle, and a gripping story told through interactive NPC characters who inhabit the bustling scavenger city of Cetus. In Plains of the Eidolon, players will set foot in a natural landscape with the freedom to explore it on their own terms.”

And yep, the expansion is indeed still on track to launch before the year is up. Check out the new trailer!

Key features in Plains of Eidolon include:

Landscapes (Open Zones) – Until now, Warframe missions have taken place in relatively closed environments. With the Plains of the Eidolon expansion, players will set foot in a vast natural landscape free to explore on their own terms.

Meet the Inhabitants of Cetus – Never before have Tenno encountered the faceless people whose lives they have saved, until now. Meet the Ostrons, a makeshift group of scavengers whose culture revolves around the grotesque harvesting of biomechanical tissue from long dormant Orokin Towers.

Different Kind of Mission – In addition to discovering and exploring, players will engage in an assortment of missions to find and assemble new Warframes and weapons, items and more. Expect to strap on Archwing for air travel andbattle, and experiment with customizing and modding a Warframe like never before.

Discover and Explore – Plains of the Eidolon offers a sense of discovery, variety, and mystery that mixes several different environments and tones to create a deep sense of place. Experience a bristling new world in where the wind rustles across your Syandana and the age and size of giant Orokin structures ominously looms in the background. Earth will be more alive than ever before.

I’ve found Warframe to be exactly what I want at times. The addition of an open zone is just even better.

Warframe has recently more or less taken over my gaming time, with this news I don’t see that changing anytime in the near future. Really good game, really good community.

It was a great stream. Open world Warframe is something I’ve always wanted. Now I’m going to get it and I still can’t believe it’s happening. People told me for years I would never get it. I laugh at them.

On top of getting that open world, I’ll actually have a use for my archwing stuff now. Watching Reb call down her archwing and fly across the map was just great. Sniper rifles also have some use now. They do still need some attention though. Going to have to fix up my Rubico either way.

Focus rework is necessary but a change that massive is sort of scary. I never liked the way the focus system worked at all but at the same time I’ve come to rely on my Zenurik for my energy needs. Losing it is going to hurt BAD, especially on my energy hungry caster frames. But I also have to admit that it’s a bit of a bandaid/crutch, so maybe it won’t end up being a bad thing to rip that bandaid off and address the underlying issues. I’m hoping for the best, but bracing for the worst.

All in all I’m really hyped. Can’t wait to dive into it.

Good news about sniper rifles, DE confirmed in an AMA earlier today that they will receive some dev attention with PoE.

I was really excited about the games potential until I discovered you have to pay real money (for game currency)to be able to buy inventory space for new warframe’s. OR you have to try to find items you can sell on a trade chat channel to other players, to earn in game currency(to buy inventory slots). I walked away in a heartbeat.
I say…. just charge a subscription…..when you have content people will pay for.

So let me get this right, assuming a standard MMO subscription, you want to pay $15 a month to play the game, whereas with $15 you can get enough plat to fill up slots you need to enjoy the game fully as you just sell off your old weapons as you get new ones anyway.

Not to mention the daily tributes can potentially give you 20/50/75% discounts on platinum purchases. I just started the game 2 weeks ago, I received a 50% discount, bought a pack of 1,000 platinum for $25 and now have enough to enjoy all the slots I would need for the far foreseeable future.

Instead of this you want them to charge a subscription? I’m having severe difficulty understanding how that could possibly be better. It looks like your problem is just that you want a full game experience for free, sorry buddy, but welcome to real life.

Frankly, I think the game with its current features is not worth paying for.NOT FOR ME. Moving to an open world offers the possibility of a much improved playing experience(for me). An experience I would expect to pay for

It is, for some reason, the perception people have when it comes to any free to play game, without even looking into the details.

Hopefully, this person will read your comment and check it out again.

Am excite!

(Well… less so about the Focus rework. If it’s soley for Operator stuff then it won’t be used outside of Plains or the occasional Sentient fight :( )
