The Stream Team: A first alpha look at Wild West Online

Not a single death, MJ???

I died twice but both times I (Han) shot first.
That was before I understood that head shots are fatal (at this point). I was aimin’ for centre mass. Nobody has attacked me yet, but I keep moving around on horseback so hard to pin down. Now I know how to “steady aim” and I also know to take out the head. LOL

I actually am enjoying this. There was a patch this morning and the graphics look way better. I’m getting 100fps consistently outside town. Distant mountains are detailed and beautiful. Lighting is good. My horse looks really nice compared to most MMOs. Avatars may be placeholder and all the same, but they are pretty good quality. Graphically this game looks nice. 0% complaint there. I actually met another desperado out in the world and we didn’t shoot. A tutorial launches now in the browser and explains a lot more, such as, your gun can cease to function and requires constant repair – I didn’t get looted, my cheap pistol broke :)

Some of what I’m saying is “duh” stuff to you guys, but I never RTFM, I just dive in and see if I can figure out what to do.

You can’t go “anywhere” but your horse is capable of climbing some fairly steep and rocky hillsides. You can hear other people coming from hoofbeats/footsteps. My horse seems to run off a bit, a few dozen metres after dismounting. Not sure if there is some way to tie them to a post to prevent this. Once it was found 150m out of town, out of a safe zone. Not cool to have to chase down my horse and leave a safe zone. Community said something about spawn points, but I don’t yet understand how to tether my horse, lol.

If you run out of money and have no gear, essentially you have to go scrounging around campsites and farmhouses looking for chests to rob. Campsites are open to plunder, farmhouses have locked chests and affect reputation if you steal from, interesting ethical choice there, but completely broke, i was forced to become a thief…
Chests don’t seem to respawn very quickly (if at all?) because every tent and farmhouse I visited had one already plundered. Hope that changes to a faster respawn.

But after a while, I have a new gun, ammo, miner’s pick, and a spiffy Clint Eastwood-style hat. Others who’ve been playing for hours have nice clothes, rifles, shotguns, desirable things.

Y’all might want to give this a try. It seems somewhat promising. I’m keeping voice off. Don’t like what I am hearing, that’s probably my only real complaint other than my horse running off and not understanding how to tie him. ;)

Those mountain ranges look pretty damn impressive. I’m really excited about the final product, at least for the visuals.

And this just convinced me to just play RDR2.

I can attest that voice channel has been trollish and porny.

We’re all the same avatar. It’s just a placeholder avatar I suppose. There is no avatar builder, with no tweaks at all other than skin shade.

I think it fulfills what an “alpha” probably should be – the first foray into a system that mostly works, without any real trimmings or details yet filled in.

I’m impressed with the décor of the little townships. They seem pretty authentic in most ways. Granted that means drab boards, hand-painted signs, etc., but isn’t that what everyone said they wanted?

I’ve had a busy day and will delve in more later tonight

Voice is bad in town, but outside of town, has been pretty useful. Talk way out of fights, also to group up. I think the local voice is kind of cool. Most surprising to me is how many are actually RPing in the game. Quite a large percentage.

Probably ’cause this game really grabbed the attention of folks who are into that stuff on games like GTA Online and ARK. There has yet to be a good venue for Wild West RP, or even a good Wild West game in general beyond Red Dead Redemption.

I like the look of the game so far. You could see what clearly looked to be hooks for future activities (a skinner? leathercrafting confirmed!). If they can keep it from becoming a complete gankbox this has a lot of potential to be the wild west MMO I’ve been looking forward to.

When I grow up I wanna be a train robber!

While definitely not content rich, I have had a lot of fun for the couple hours I’ve spent in game. The game world is well done and fun to explore. I’m also notorious already so there’s that. :P Hey, I’m sorry. I thought you looked at me wrong! The potential is here for a great game. I’m still really hesitant to get my hopes up, but so far so good.

Yeah they have a long road ahead of them to really break past all the skeptics/critics.

Especially because of how much shit spreads word of mouth and people don’t even bother doing their own research on the subject of stuff like the Sergey Titov controversy. People left and right were spreading misinformation on Twitch streams discussing it and I was just sitting back like “…no if you’ve actually taken the time to read up on it before blathering false info you’d know X, Y, Z and would be able to make a better assessment from there.”

So it’ll really be up to the devs to prove that it’s better than that, and that WWO is the real deal. It’ll be hard as hell to do but hopefully they do manage to do it.

Definitely seems like there’s some potential fun times to be had if people don’t abuse the voice chat/be totally miserable piles of filfth to one another.
