World of Warcraft Senior Producer Stephan Frost leaves Blizzard

One of the MMORPG industry’s more prominent designers is leaving one of the MMORPG industry’s more prominent games. On Friday, World of Warcraft Senior Design Producer Stephan Frost announced that he is departing from the title and the studio for an unnamed opportunity.

“Bittersweet day ahead of me today, it’s my last day at Blizzard,” Frost tweeted. “There’s a big opportunity I felt I had to take, but I’ll miss the people.”

Frost worked his way up to prominence at Carbine Studios, where he eventually became WildStar’s game design producer. He left in 2014, spent less than a year at Amazon Game Studios, and then joined up with Blizzard in 2015 where he became a senior producer on World of Warcraft.

In addition to game design, Frost is a voice actor (he did the WildStar “dev speak” videos) and the creator of a comic book called Mortifera.

Khalith .

I still want to know how this dude keeps managing to fail upwards.

“One of the MMORPG industry’s more prominent designers” That’s a bit of an overstatement WildStar didn’t do well at all and is still bleeding right now, He seems to jump from company to company changing those new opportunities. I hope that he gave Blizzard time for replacing him to not impact the dev work on the new xpack….

Honestly sounds like a waste of investment for Blizzard and Amazon before that. He was just getting everything down and becoming a worthwhile asset for Blizzard and now he’s leaving?

A waste of investment for Amazon, yes indeed! But for Blizzard, he started in 2015 that’s about two years of work that got out of hiring him so not that bad really but still a bad move to leave before the new xpack was completed

In my opinion they got 6 months to maybe a year out of him that might be considered asset worthy. Just my opinion mind you.

What is your evidence to back that up?

Reader
Ian Wells

Having worked in the real world? The first year of any complex job is basically you just screwing up repeatedly while learning the ropes, occasionally not even being aware that you screwed up until later when your mistake bites someone else on the butt.

Bet anything he is moving to Enterprise development like every other developer worth their salt. Better hours/benefits three times the pay and you don’t have some SJW doxxing you because you didn’t use the pronoun du jour.

Reader
the_guilty_party

Doxxing is harassment primarily targeted towards women for the terrible crime of being a woman. Peddle your false equivalency elsewhere.

Reader
Jeff

Thanks Trigglypuff, but that is an idiotic assertion with no metrics to back it up.

Well, you did make the silly comment about “some SJW Doxxing you”. You are aware Jeff that it’s not usually SJW’s who do the majority of doxxing. Also, what’s your beef with women?

As an aside, what a stupid insult. I don’t get why in the few years people have become idiots and think it’s a bad idea to care about others and to make sure others aren’t repressed and abused. Seriously people are fucking mental half wits, I can’t believe I gave as manys years as I did serving for such fucktardery.

Reader
Jeff

Oh please save your mock outrage, I didn’t bring women into this, also it sorta ironic that you get on some moral high horse about repressing and abusing and then start flinging insults.

Finally I’m sorry that you regret your life’s choices but they are your choices, bringing this into the conversation to highlight how woke you are is pathetic.

To sum up you can’t take your opinions and go doxx yourself.

Reader
Jeremy Barnes

You used a term incorrectly. Accept it and get over it, cupcake.

Reader
birini

Why do you say doxxing primarily targets women? Are there stats on this somewhere?

Reader
Sorrior Draconus

Their are some statistic funny bit doesn’t support that. Actually if bringing gender stuff into this their was a woman who supported Gamergate who was doxxed by the far left side and had her address and even kids school address revealed.

Another involved a pro Gamergate person receiving a weird thing with liquid in the mail.

Meanwhile Anita specifically had harassment claims investigated by the fbi who said she was in no danger at the college. She still cancelled and claims too dangerous.

In short yeah but it supports the anti PC crowd not those obsessed with gender stuff.

A Senior Design Producer at Blizzard claims there’s a big opportunity he has to take, seriously bigger than being a Senior Producer at Blizzard? I’m curious what that is for sure.

Reader
Harry Koala

Almost anything outside the games industry would qualify :)

The best reason to leave a company like Blizzard is for a smaller company where you can have more freedom to explore your ideas instead of being locked in the bureaucracy of a mega corporation.

Seems to be something of a wandering soul.

I don’t think much can be made of this, considering his employment history.

Yeah that was my take as well.

Yeah I don’t see how much you can truly accomplish if you don’t sit down and concentrate at the task at hand for longer than a few years.

In my opinion he was just getting everything down in Blizzard’s case, the personalities, the code etc etc. To invest in that two years and leave, is a waste.

I’m starting to be able to set a timer to these trickle down leavings with Bliz.

He sure is hopping jobs a lot. I know high turnover is relatively normal for the industry, but not quite THAT high for high-level positions…

Reader
Lorgarn

Well, he joined Blizzard two years ago or something? What a great addition to his CV that must be, he can probably choose from a huge variety of high-level positions in the industry right now.

Mortifera is a great comic. Leaving Blizzard is an odd career move. I wonder what his opportunity is?

Chosenxeno .

Frost killed Wildstar. Eff him. #Hardcore Idiot.

Reader
Lethality

No… idiotic, whiny, entitled, bad players killed WildStar.

Reader
RJB

Jesus Frost can’t stay in a place for very long

Reader
Sorenthaz

It’s either Riot Games or Amazon.

That said how much impact did he even have on the game if he was only there for 2 years?

Reader
Lethality

I dunno… but Legion was WoW’s best expansion, possibly ever. So there’s that!

Reader
Jeremy Barnes

It…was?

ceder
Reader
ceder

Sadly I’ve seen more good folks and guilds die this expansion than I’ve seen since Cataclysm though. Personally I don’t think Legion was their best ever either.

Reader
BDJ

Eventually u have to give up raising as a full time job or playing a game 6+ hours a day. Legion didn’t cause people to quit. The longevity of the game did.

Reader
birini

Certainly the best since 2014.

Reader
Jeremy Barnes

That seems true.

Reader
Coldin Torrence

Seems like Frost moves around kind of a lot. Wonder where he’s headed.

Even for that industry it seems unusual. 3 gigs in 3 years?

Reader
Sally Bowls

4 really. Since 2014 he will have Carbine, Amazon, Blizzard and the “unnamed opportunity” du jour on his resume.

The industry for most is a constant shuffle of musical chairs really though.

Back at Amazon mebets

Reader
Sorenthaz

Either that or Riot Games to join Ghostcrawler, lul.

Though Riot has been supposedly trying to make a second video game, last I heard it was basically going to be a game that jumps on the Overwatch train.

Reader
BDJ

I would play it. League characters in a shooting game. It’s already set up for it, ability wise. I think it would be a blast.

Reader
Sorenthaz

Probably would be the closest thing I’d be able to get to something resembling Monday Night Combat again.

Reader
Coldin Torrence

Amazon makes the most sense to me. Or some other studio as a hype man I guess.

agemyth 😩

Back at Carbine mebets. For that FF14:ARR-level relaunch of Wildstar. 😆…. 😓

Reader
Bryan Correll

While I can’t seen Wildstar getting the truly massive redo that FF14 had (NCSoft would never put that much cash into it,) the apparent success of Secret World Legends may give companies behind other marginal games to try the same sort of softer reboot.

Reader
Sorenthaz

It’s really hard to see any big resurgence for Wildstar at this point.

Solaris

Yeah. It’s not going to happen.
