PlanetSide 2 revamped continent locking in this week’s Critical Mass update

Daybreak went all-out in PlanetSide 2 this week with a massive new update, though you probably wouldn’t know it unless you play the game. Let’s change that now: The update is called Critical Mass, and it constitutes “a major revision of the way continents are fought over and conquered” in the form of a continent locking revamp.

“One of the driving motivators of revitalizing the continent locking system is to encourage more strategy and competitive spirit in PlanetSide 2,” Daybreak explains. “Prior to this update, locking a continent was not only confusing for many players, but also happened abruptly, and often times without direct influence from the players fighting on the front lines. The new system intends to create a climactic end-of-continent encounter that challenges players not only as individuals, but as squads, platoons, and outfits. We want players to feel the rush of a hard fought victory, and reward them for partaking in it.”

There’s plenty more to the update, including new armaments, weapon adjustments, refreshed archetype interactions, adjusted vehicle and armor certs, a la carte cosmetics, and bug fixes. Let us know if you’re playing!

My gaming pc had died so i started playing this on ps4. We are only getting implants next patch so hopefully they merge it with critical mass update and release it soon.

I’m going to have to get in there and see how everything works now. If you read the patch notes, it sounds like they have made some pretty significant changes to gameplay as well, armor values, resist types, how things work with each other, new implants… the list is long. As a mostly infantry player I’m a bit worried that the changes are going to negatively impact my playstyle… we’ll see. I still play at least a few times a week, but I get so lost in my playtime I have to be careful or I could look up and find I’ve been playing all night. ;)

I’ve found the ideas behind some of the changes pretty cool, like with the new implant system and ability changes, but in practice it just makes playing as anything other than a Heavy even more pointless than usual. The ability to stack even more additional health/shields just throws the Heavy more out of balance.

Now if only the gunplay was actually fun. Some of the worst gunplay in an FPS game.

That mean they dumped the damn lattice system? Hated that killed ps1 and than it killed ps2. Battle become so boring since you were always coming at things from same angle.

Awesome, love hearing PS2 news. I still play at least once a month, sometimes more. For as long as Daybreak keeps Briggs open, i’m always more than willing to hop back in.

If you use ‘PS2WelcomeBack’ code on your account, you get platinum NSX Tento and helmet – not sure how long this code will be valid :)

I’ve been playing PS2 since Alpha and I still love it. I have seen nothing but dedication and progress from the dev team from the beginning, even with the buyout and all the staff turn overs in the last couple of years. Kudos to them. That being said, I do still miss Planetside and I’m hoping one day more systems will be brought into PS2 like underground warfare, mechs and possibly a better inventory system with cross faction gun pickups.

I’d settle for a flight model that wasn’t just plain weird and counter-intuitive

I kind of got used to it, eventually. But then I bailed because Infantryside game balancing means that my favourite role, ground attack, is both suicidal and pointlessly ineffective. So unless you want to wave your e-peen around and duel other sky knights, there’s nothing to do in an aircraft.
