WRUP: So crazy and random edition

Hey, folks, I’d like to announce for the record that I am just so crazy and random! I surprise people with my completely insane behavior, like… putting two unrelated nouns together in sequence! Or laughing at something mildly transgressive and largely hateful! Garbage pizza! Explosion soda! Wow, you just can’t keep up with my crazy behavior! Sometimes I even do something spontaneously silly!

And sometimes I sit in my neighbor’s yard for four hours at a stretch, a blue tarp draped over my shoulders, mumbling things like “the flesh is silent beneath the waves” until said neighbors draw their curtains. I squat there, and I know in my head that it doesn’t matter, nothing really matters, everything is a yawning abyss of pointlessness and it matters so little, sometimes you just want the brick and mortar and tar of this tangible world to swallow you up because then everything will be silent and you can finally rest content in your own irrelevance.

Oh, and there’s a “You Don’t Have To Be Crazy To Work Here, But It Helps” sign over my desk. So random! Let me know what you’re up to in this week’s What Are You Playing comments.

Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): Oh man, so excited for the weekend! I’ve got an Undertale video game book club meet (not playing, but discussing a game in detail; it seems like work, but I actually get to interact with people in real time). After that, Pokemon Go with my friend and her Final Fantasy XIV playing co-worker. Hoping to get them Raikou before it changes, especially since October 1 is when my PoGo group will be searching for whatever legendary beast comes next! But… man, my feet are getting tired from the extra walking we’ve been doing!

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): Guild Wars 2.

And I might do some skilling in Ultima Online. But mostly Guild Wars 2.

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog):There’s a big patch on the way for FFXIV, so I’ll be prepping up for that; otherwise, I’ve got work to do on GW2 for column purposes. That should keep me pretty well occupied.

Justin Olivetti (@Sypster, blog): I just started up a new captain in Star Trek Online, because that’s all I seem to do in this game is reroll. Apart from dabbling in that, I’m trying to finish up a particularly fiendish zone in Lord of the Rings Online and perhaps wrap up Transylvania in Secret World Legends.

MJ Guthrie (@MJ_Guthrie, blog): I have a personal commitment for much of the weekend, but I will slip in a little bit of ARK: Survival Evolved, a little bit of Secret World Legends, and a little bit of EverQuest II. When I say slip in, I mean I doubt I will manage more than 4 hours of playtime all totaled. I might also try to finish another anniversary Corgi quest or two in ArcheAge, but since I have to grind in the library for cheese I don’t see that being very successful in the short time I have.

Patron Pierre: Last weekend, I gave a try to Divinity Original Sin 2, that I enjoyed a lot. It’s one of the best RPGs I played, Larian Studios did improve their recipe so nicely. But Destiny 2 has its grip on me and I couldn’t resist going back to it. So this weekend will be Destiny 2 exclusively. On the MMO front, I don’t know why, may be because it was my first MMORPG, or because it’s a very good one, but I have been tempted to go back to Final Fantasy XI these last weeks. I didn’t, but just because free time is so limited. Darn, why do we have to lose all this time earning our living?? :D Enjoy your weekend MOP readers and tell us what you’re playing. Cheers!

Your turn!

Second weekend in a row that I’ve had to work extra hours because there’s just too much work! I think for the first time in years, I’m going to have to hire or at least propose to hire an assistant. Not a bad thing I suppose! As far as gaming goes, I’m still in the MMO drought. Once I’m done with work today, I’m probably gonna come home and have a think and write a little something.

Very little gaming this weekend. Today is my 22nd wedding anniversary. The kids are finally old enough that we can leave them without a babysitter and go out for an elaborate dinner at a fine restaurant. Tomorrow is mostly outdoor chores and a 4-H fair. If I can, I’ll squeeze in some time with the RNG-fueled extravaganza that is LotRO‘s Treasure Hunt. My main scored the Treasure-Laden Pony there earlier this week (I was hoping to get the goat, but … you can’t look a gift horse in the mouth!). Have a great weekend all!

This week: “…with that obsession you have with your pigtails”, to paraphrase a reader before the Bree moderation descended upon our conversation. So yeah…what’s with that? Well when one adorns a pair of extra animated appendages that sometimes takes a life on their own, I tend to be a little obsessive about them. Kind of likely owning big fluffy temperamental cats…only these are attached to my body. And they get particularly testy when I am combing the knots they have accumulated with an overnight’s good sleep in the morning. :(

Also this week: Nuit Blanche, WoW and my best wishes that mysecretid-san gets better from whatever is ailing him or her just below. /bows

My health is misbehaving this week (it ebbs and flows, so don’t worry) and that meant I was playing games which I find less demanding (i.e. they don’t need a lot of mental focus from me).

So, some World of Warcraft; some Agents of Mayhem (when I was feeling peppier); some of Stellaris, with the new robotic empires DLC (Hirku, you seen this yet?), and, of course, some Star Trek Online.

Finally found out why my Agents of Mayhem game permanently hangs every time I try to add in the Johnny Gat DLC — apparently, the recent 1.03 game patch for PS4 causes this problem for certain players. It’s not even tied to the DLC necessarily, only the patch. Some people are getting perma-hang with no store-bought DLC installed at all. Volition knows about the issue, but we’re still waiting for them to solve the mystery.

Take care of yourselves, folks. We only get one shot at this life, as far as we know, so I’d like as many friendly faces around as possible! :-D

Cheers,

On a side note, how is the new Stellaris DLC?

Reader

mysecretid

Thank you for your kind words.

I’m running the beta-patch of the DLC (you have to intentionally download it from Steam — Steam should tell you how) and it seems fine, BUT I am the first guy to tell you that I do not go over the Stellaris rules and changes with a magnifying glass. :-)

Basically, I play — and if the new stuff seems fun, I deem it good, and if it screws up my gameplay, I say there needs to be changes made. So, I’m probably not the guy you want to ask about the finer details, Panda. :-)

I did see something in my latest game which impressed me, though — one of the early empires which showed up was an “exterminate all biological life” nasty type of machine empire.

I figured that it would fall to me, as the player, to take care of this evil machine collective, as NPC empires have traditionally been sort of oblivious to threats in Stellaris until the enemy empires actually attack them.

Not this time, though. While I was building up my fleets and armies for a pre-emptive strike, two of my NPC neighbors formed a war alliance and completely destroyed the machine empire before they could launch their campaign of genocide!

So, again, I’m no expert, but it looks like the game AI has gotten a bit smarter. :-D

Cheers,

I’m still playing Rift and I should be wrapping up Nightmare Tide either this weekend or sometime next week. I’m looking forward to checking out PoA but I’m a little concerned too based on the reviews about TTK and mob density.

Besides that I plan on taking a look at Tree of Savior and Warframe again this weekend. I loved ToS when it launched but then I went on an MMO hiatus for several months and haven’t played since. It’s a beautiful game with a great soundtrack. That’s about it. But that works for me!

I’ve gone back for a bit of Secret World Legends as I enjoy the worldbuilding and the combat is still fresh. Also because I can tote around a freakin’ M60 as my main weapon.

Aside from that, I’m slogging through FFXIV with an emphasis on slog. There’s a lot I love about the game, but the cutscene to action ratio of the main story questline is sleep-inducing at times. And since pretty much everything is gated by the MSQ, not to mention I’m still playing catch up to my FC, well… At least I’ve made it to Rhalgr’s Reach?

I’m still working on Alien: Isolation. Also dabbling a bit with the Nemesis Forge in Shadow of Mordor to see if I can get a couple of decent carry-overs into Shadow of War.

When I need a break from Alien, I’ve been playing Endless Space 2 and I’m thinking of picking up a new Total War game. But we’ll see. I’ve also been playing Golf Story, which is just loud-out-loud funny. So far I would say Everybody’s Golf is the better game in terms of actually playing golf, but Golf Story’s writing is more than worth it.

Still in limbo as far as MMOs go. I feel pulled between LOTRO, ESO, FFXIV, and BDO. So the net result is that I’ve made zero decisions and have made no progress anywhere.

Reader

Warframe is so strange in that virtually no one talks about it, yet its player base is huge. It’s a game I keep meaning to check out, but it always seems to stay at number 3 or 4 on the list of “games I need to play”, never quite rising to the top for me. Some day… maybe.

Reader

I feel the same way. Every time I look at it, I think, “This looks technically excellent, but the game world also looks so f#ckin’ weird, I can’t relate”, and I wander off and go play something else.

As you say, Sray, maybe some day …

Reader
Major Glitch

I’ll level with you. I’d totally forgotten about this game until I recently started looking up stuff about Destiny 2. No matter where I went, I kept running into people talking about Warframe. Naturally, my curiosity got the better of me so I gave it a shot a few days ago. I was immediately blown away. What impressed me the most was the dedication the small team of devs has shown towards the game and its community. I would definitely recommend checking it out, whenever you get the chance of course.

This past week I’ve been on a pretty significant League of Legends binge with playing ranked to try and push into Gold V. Still working on that since matchmaking is like a coin flip of who gets the biggest tilter(s) on their team, not to mention everyone is trying to get Gold and there are a lot of boosters running around.

If I can get peeled off of that I’ll probably be putting some time into Smite, possibly FFXIV, maybe Conan Exiles if my friend gets back in the mood to play, and/or who knows what else.

Reader
Sray

All around irritated this week by a bunch of little things. House repairs thank fully look like they’re nowhere near as bad as initially thought (looks like what we thought was a heating pipe inside the foundation is actually like a pipe in the walls, so it’s a somewhat smaller job) but now the insurance is taking their time telling us they’ll pay for it, even though they were quite ready to pay for the much more expensive foundation work that was expected.

Then there’s all the Coffee Lake news from Intel that bugs me: I knew the next gen of CPUs would be out within six months based on their usual release schedule, and I was okay with that; but when it became six weeks… I’m less okay with that because had Nvidia not said anything about not releasing Volta this year, I’d have been waiting until about now to even decide whether or not to assemble a new PC this year.

And then there’s the Switch problem…

What am I playing? Well, I’m not playing Zelda: Breath of the Wild on my new Switch, because… it sucks. It really sucks. It is gawd awful. I’m not trolling: I honestly hate this game; and I can’t remember the last time I regretted a game purchase as much as this one. The thing that bugs me the most is that on paper it is pretty much everything I love in games these days, and all of the streams and videos I’ve watched made it look like fun. But the end result when it’s all put together and in my hands is: “wtf is this crap?” Frustrating because my “gaming budget” (both time and money) for October is basically already spent, and grabbing a new game for the Switch will essentially double what I was going to spend, which ain’t happening while I got the house repairs. So I have a shiny new Switch, and nothing to play. Sigh… first world problems.

So, what will I actually be playing? First planned purchase for the coming month just finished downloading and I’ll be jumping into Hob, which just finished downloading a few minutes ago. Pretty good reviews so far, and the gameplay videos and streams look like it’s a lot of fun… so after Zelda I’m a little worried -especially since I purchased on GoG.com, so there’s no refunds- but I’ve actually spent a fair bit of time investigating the game, and should enjoy it (or at least not find that I venomously hate it).

And there’s also Persona 5, which I’ve had a little break from for the last week or so, and I feel like I’m ready to jump back into: 15 hours into the campaign, and I’ve finally finished the tutorial! Woohoo! And I’ve also got PUBG, for those times when I feel like I need to get shot by someone that I can’t see.

Hope everyone is having some solid gaming fun this week.

Reader
rafael12104

Person 5 is pretty good. But, I have to say, after playing about half way through the entire game, I kept asking myself, when is it going to finish.

I don’t know… I’d give Nier Automata a look. Game of the Year IMO. So, damn interesting mechanically and with their story. And when you think you have finished the game? Yeah, you have just completed the prologue. Endings C through E are the real game, and wow. Just wow. Check out nonspoiler Youtube reviews. It will give a feel for it.

As for Zelda? Ah well, it grew on me. At first it was like an old Nintendo game, but once you are past the starter stuff, and you realize that you can do anything, literally, it shines. You want to cook, tame a horse, climb a mountain peak? Oh, yes. You can do all of that. Get away from the linear story and just adventure. It’s worth the effort. Oh, be ready to die though. Not very forgiving if you get yourself into trouble. Lol

Reader
Sray

I tried the Nier Automata demo: it wasn’t for me. No strong feelings about it, I just found it meh. I’m sure the story is really great and all, but unless I’m playing a Telltale style game, story is always a distant second for me, and Nier’s game play just didn’t really grab me enough to want to get it. Well, at least not at anything more than $20 to $25 Canadian; especially not with the seeming complete lack of support on the PC, which by far is still my preferred platform.

just FYI coffee lake is just an iteration on kabylake. the new 6 core 8700k is literally just a 7700k with two more cores shoved into the chip. which is great if you want a fairly cheap six core chip with great gaming performance but not necesarily anything to get too excited over.

and afaik the z370 chipset offers nothing new or interesting over teh z270 either so there’s that as well.

Reader
rafael12104

I built a Kabylake system late last year, and it is an excellent gaming rig. Best, I’ve ever had to be honest. So, if Coffee is Kaby with more cores? It’s all good.

deekay_plus
Reader
deekay_plus

yeah like kabylake before it it’s not a particular interesting refresh at all. i think that’s a large part of the reason ryzen sales are overtaking intel sales right now is if you’ve got an intel chip made since the third core i line you really have little reason to upgrade, where as if you’re stuck on brand loyalty and have a pre ryzen amd chip it’s going to be a massive performance boost.

Reader
Sray

Yeah it is, but a new chipset on the same socket as well, so that the new CPUs won’t go into z170 or z270 systems, but Skylake and Kaby Lake will go into the new z370: typical Intel stuff.

deekay_plus

eh i find intel’s socket system while somewhat cynical to be more honest than amd’s somewhat misleading legacy socket support thing.

the e6750 was the first pc i built myself. shorted one of my two optical drives when one of the pins in the connector pushed back lol. freaked me right out.

core 2 line up would mark intel’s come back and domination over amd ever since after amd was kicking their asses for so long in the aughts.

Reader
Sray

I know that, but it’s still a bit of a kick in nuts to guys like me who upgraded over the summer on the assumption that the next step wasn’t on it’s way for a few months yet. It’s not a “Intel screwed me” feeling as much as it’s feeling like the universe conspired to make me feel a little bit stupid.

Oh well, guess I’ll have to settle for my rig only being faster than 97% of all other rigs out there in stead of 98% of them lol.

deekay_plus
Reader
deekay_plus

eh it’s only faster in applications that will use those extra cores, so pretty much nixes games for the most part.

i guess it would 7zip things faster tho if you really rely on 7zip speed :D

but really it’s just the way she goes with pc gaming. something better is always right around the corner and if you wait for the next best thing you may find yourself waiting forever.

that’s why even tho i just literally built this pc this month i’m not fussed at all even tho coffee lake is nicely priced for what it is.

i thinki’ll be more upset if amd forces intel to start pushing legit performance gains on the cpu in the next couple years as i am kind of half hoping to repeat not needing to upgrade my cpu for another six years lol

Reader
Sray

I’m not one of those “let’s just perpetually wait for the next big thing” kinds of guys, but my original plan was to wait until now to see if Volta would roll out this year, so that’s why I’m feeling a bit of a sting: “if I’d only just stuck to the plan…”

But I am also a little worried about whether or not we’ll see some revolutionary performance gains in the next couple years, and finding myself in mid-2019 feeling like a guy who bought a Core 2 Quad three months before the Core i7 debut.

deekay_plus
Reader
deekay_plus

yeah i hear ya lol. i think i’m in a position where i cna replace this 1080gtx with volta when it comes out and sell the 1080 to a guildie who has been asking everyone in guild for a discount upgrade to hi s 660ti for what feels like years now.

we’ll have to see what volta brings to the table tho. but nvidia has been smashing the past some years and still hasn’t capitalized on that HBM yet on top of it (tho early HBM has draw backs that probably has been the reason nvidia has held back on it so far).

I’m sorry you aren’t enjoying Zelda. Buyer’s remorse really sucks. I felt the same way after picking up Fortnite a while back. It looked like just the cutest, funnest game ever, but I just can’t get into it. Hopefully you enjoy Hob more. I wanna pick that one up myself.

Would you be willing to go into more detail about why you hate Breath of the Wild? It might be my GOTY, but I’m seriously just asking out of curiosity and because I like hearing different opinions, not because I’m burning to argue and be all “omg why don’t you like the same thing that I do!?!?!?”

Reader
Sray

It’s tough to pinpoint because it’s mostly a bunch of little complaints that add up to every time that the game starts to look like it’s about to be fun, something undercuts that.

– the layout of the controls feels off, like every action has been intentionally mapped to a counterintuitive spot just to be contrarian, and buttons can’t be remapped
– the map just feels big and empty: I know that’s empirically not true, but between Link’s slow movement and the size of the map, it’s how I end up feeling
– Link is weak as kitten, which is opposite reason why I play video games: I like feeling empowered, and Link feels crippled
– much of the combat is melee action, but there’s no active dodge/rolling mechanic, which makes fighting feel awkward, and like this combat system should be in a different game
– the complete lack of a straightforward introductory tutorial leaves me no confidence that I’m doing anything correctly; I get that past Zelda games have been criticized for being too hand-holdy, but for my tastes this is way too big a leap in the opposite direction

That’s just stuff off the top of my head.

And I get that a lot of this is “feeling” stuff, but that’s really the only way I can describe it: there’s all this really fantastic stuff in front of me, but everything just feels just a tiny little bit wrong in someway; ending up in a game that seems to actively be trying to make me hate it.

Nothing crazy. Tried out Heat Signature at a friend’s. Finished current main story of Tokyo SWL (but still lots of main and sidemissions left). Returned to MEA, casually ‘questing’ in Voeld and its a little better, being familiar with the workings of the game by now. Also MEA MP once in a while – I’ll get Uncommons completed/Silver mastered one day! (I do get Rare/Gold but its not my focus.) Heya Malcolm,

How are the graphics on Heat Signature during play?

I was interested in this, but the graphics just looked so damn low-end during the development previews, I sort of backed off. I’m not a “graphics über alles” dude, but if I’m going to be playing a game for X+ hours, it shouldn’t make my eyeballs sad, either.

Still plugging away at Warframe Plains of Eidolon prep. Nami Skyla Prime blade is still eluding me two weeks later. I just can’t get the damn thing. So I moved on to other, more attainable things such as Vauban Prime. How in the world I’m making progress on this resource monster that sucked the collective souls out of the player base over one little blade is beyond me. I already have 2 parts of him built and only 2.5k cryotic away from having all the pieces. I did all that in the time I’ve spent chasing one blade. I swear the RNG in this game is more random than Eliot, and that’s EXTREMELY difficult to do.

Restarted my No Man’s Sky save. Realized I was pushing myself to get a farm and freighter running and ended up killing my enjoyment. Wiped everything out and started over from square one. Enjoyment has been restored. Not going to rush anything this time. RNG also blessed me with an S class rifle multi-tool with 24 slots within 5 hours of restarting. I think the RNG in NMS stole my RNG luck in Warframe.

Got all my Fallout 4 mods up and running again. Took a few days as I deleted everything and did a fresh install of all new mods. Going all in with pistols and robots. Should be good.

To finish it up I might actually start the Danganronpa series. I was gifted the first two games some time ago but only played the first one a little bit. I think I barely made it past the first murder. The third game came out recently and I’ve been hearing some good buzz on it so I might as well dive in as I already have the first two.

Reader
Sray

When I restarted playing NMS a few weeks back, I got a sweet class A ship within 20 minutes of starting my new game. This and your story about the multi-tool make me wonder if they tweaked something in the RNG to drastically increase the chances finding something really powerful early on so as to help draw players in more.

I have been rolling along slowly in Divinity Original Sin 2 trying to leave no stone unturned. With the game being so dense it takes me a while to get through though – 35 hours in and I just reached the 2nd major location (I think).

I felt I needed to also have something to drop in and out of this week so I stumbled upon an EA ARPG, Book of Demons, that has random dungeons selectable by size/rewards – and I love games that give me options like that.

that has random dungeons selectable by size/rewards –

sword coast legends has that sort of thing. and if you aren’;t hung up on it pretending to be a dnd game apparently it’s fairly enjoyable for what it is according to boom. tho i’m not sure how much play time he actually got out of it before he went back to getting slaughtered in bf1 lol

Ya, I played the hell of that for a while. I was hoping the player created content was going to take off, but the dev ended up going under before all the assets for that were released. Crossing my fingers for DOS:2 in that regard.
I still have another code in my email for Sword Coast Legends – I guess it still works. If anyone wants to try it email me at rokzulie@gmail.com and I will shoot it over.

didn’t realize they went under. i know the game wasn’t recieved well at launch despite alot of dnd fan interest right up to that point.

i actually liked the game myself for what it was but none of my guildies who bought in with me showed up at launch to play lol. was rather dissapointing to say the least QQ

Ya some of that fan drop off was also due to the assets that were supposed to coming, but the publisher was funding everything and they pulled out completely and suddenly hanging everyone out to dry.
I was never big on the actual D&D lore/rule stuff so I did not care about that part.

Alot of ppl were upset by bugs and exploits and the fact that the best loot came from the vendors instead of as loot. I guess they did improve that somewhat tho.

It was kind of weird because post launch the most vocal ppl were treating it like some kind of competitive arpg instead of a dnd game, which i can kind of see why but really the game missed the point of using the dnd ip imo tho you could tell the devs really did want to make a proper dnd game but were hamstrung by wotc (which they are notorious for).

Anyways like i said i thought it was ok for what it was but guildies disliked it for reason(they still complain about me spawning zombie hordes as dm lol)

I’m playing “Move to another PC while trying not to lose my mind” game, i hate moving between computers, there is always one more thing missing, last one was a monitor cable, the monitor came with VGA cable only! so when (or if!) i put the computer together i’ll need to reinstall everything, i may try GW2 again.

I am still trying to get going with Divinity Original Sin 2. I have started over half a dozen times already for reason relating to origin story, class and party makeup. The game has prebuilt characters that you can use instead of making your own from scratch though you can still customise the premades in terms of class / skills or looks..

My problem is that I know if you pick one of the premades as your “main” it adds some extra flavour to the story progression and I am having a tough time deciding which one to use first, hence a lot of the restarts as I tried each one out to see who I like.

I think I have settled on using the undead one, Fane, as my main and I hope I have managed to pick a good mix for the others in terms of who and what skills they use so I get a lot of the story for them too.

Probably not much else other than Overwatch for a change of pace, maybe.

Hope everyone has a safe and fun gaming weekend o/

I went with Sebille along with Fane, Beast, & The Red Prince in my group from the first go, but I tend to just drudge on thru.

I ended up with The Red Prince, Loshe and Beast to go along with Fane. I was toying with the idea of doing a solo Fane run but figured I am going to have a hard enough time playing it with a party on the first go through I nixed the idea. Might be something I try once I am more familiar with the game though, so many options arrgghhh ;-)

I’ve come full circle. Four years and change ago I wasn’t playing MMOs but I was playing The Longest Journey and Dreamfall. When I finished I wanted more of that level of quality and went searching for other games by Ragnar Tørnquist, found TSW, and away I went.

Now I’m not playing MMOs again and the final cut of Dreamfall: Chapters released this summer, so I’m starting over from the beginning to revisit some old friends and finally see the end of their story.

I really enjoyed Dreamfall Chapters, myself. It wasn’t the most polished on release, and you could tell at certain points that they had less money to work with than they would have preferred, but all-in-all, I found it a fitting end to a great story.

And for people who never played the earlier games, the “recap” feature cutscene added late in the release was a decent way to bring new players up to speed, all things considered.

I wonder what Ragnar might offer up next?

Draugen & Svalbard, both probably a long ways away:

I bought Dreamfall Chapters about two years ago and couldn’t quite get into it: the world and puzzles seemed a bit too dense to me; has the directors cut fixed some of that? Made some of the puzzles a bit more intuitive? I’d love to hop back into the game at some point, but for something that I’d be playing mainly for the narrative, it seemed like it was too much work for a story that wasn’t really gripping me yet.

Heh, when I said start over from the beginning, I meant the very beginning of the whole trilogy. I’m only on Ch. 2 of The Longest Journey, so I’ll let you know about Chapters some time next year.
