Star Citizen debuts Origin X1 racer concept ship for sale

If you need a break from counting down the time until Star Citizen alpha 3.0 is here, you could always just go buy a new concept ship. The new Origin X1 racing bike is a stylish futuristic speedster is more lightly armed than its contemporaries but makes up for it with a second shield generator and extra toughness. In lore, it’s described as

“a fast, maneuverable open-canopy racer that’s as much of a work of art while at rest as it is in motion. With thrusters seemlessly integrated into the sleek hull, the X1 organically fuses function with form and continues Origin’s proud legacy of luxury perfection.”

The low-end version will set you back just $35, but if you have cash to splash around on pixels, there’s a $1200 addon pack as well. You should probably check the new Q&A (and maybe yourself) before whipping out a credit card, however, as the X1 will not actually make it into alpha 3.0; it’s set for a more distant date.

Last week, the team at one point had the must-fix bug list down to 0, but it crept back up, forcing another delay for Evocati testers. Expect the latest update, in addition to the monthly report, by tomorrow.

Well, colour me surprised: another ship (well, “bike”) sale for money that adds another couple of months to this fiasco. We are going to be sitting here in two years time with more imaginary items being sold and no game to play. I can’t believe people are falling for this – open your eyes people!!

If these comments teach me anything it’s that investment breeds solid foot-soldiers.

Once they are invested in it they become totally engulfed in denial when anyone questions that this game will ever be made.

This is truly amazing. I wish I had a company that didn’t need to deliver a production ready product and got people to continually purchase never-ending digital assets for the product that I never finish.

I wonder if Pokemon-Go could sell “upcoming” Pokemon but never actually get them into the game?

I wonder if Nike could sell shoes that never actually get made and shipped to consumers?

I see public opinion finally seems to be turning against CIG. I remember a time not so long ago when any criticism of Star Citizen, no matter how well-meaning or benign, was quickly shouted down with the usual credibility attacks, ‘haters gonna hate’, ‘you know nothing of game development’, ‘look how long swtor took to make’, etc, etc.

To my mind the whole concept ship sale thing struck me from the get go as all kinds of wrong; way overpriced engineering debt. Further, Roberts rips off the most cheesy and cliched tropes from Star Wars, Top Gun, Dune, to say nothing of jingoistic Hollywood war movies, yet fans think he’s some kind of visionary and game storytelling god. No words!

Reader
Oleg Chebeneev

Nobody except you called him storytelling god but yes, he is a great visionary for space sims. Its foolish to argue with that.

I just want to know why that road has ridges. Did Ruffles become a construction brand?

I know it’s meant to be speed and light streaks, but it really is too aggressive and looks like some giant long black potato chip.

This game is destined to fail. I’ve said it before, but it will never make more money than it’s making right now, and that’s a horrible thing for an unreleased product.

A new work colleague told me the other day that he has over £3000 ($4000) invested in this game……

Taken from the joint account.

So he might end up with no game and no wife by the time this story finishes, I have to admit it has been very hard not to laugh.

Real talk – why are they still selling ships? Are they running out of money to finish what they’ve said they will deliver? Are they still trying to expand the feature creep and bloat that’s been a part of why milestones are continually delayed?

I’ve never really looked into it, but I’m genuinely curious as to the official line behind why they’re still doing it, especially nowadays.

Reader
A Dad Supreme

“Real talk – why are they still selling ships? “
=====
I thought about this a bit and let’s look at a positive and negative view.

Positive first: They are selling so many concept ships because they have a high degree of confidence that this game will not only launch, but that they will be able to put most of what they say in the game. Once that’s done, this game will be hotter than WoW when it launched and has the potential to be even larger over time (infinite universe). Since they say they don’t need more money to launch, this concept ship stuff is all going to a war chest for the first expansion to hire more people after launch and keep the ball rolling.

Negative: They are selling so many concept ships because they have a low degree of confidence that this game will launch well, and will not have nearly any of what they promised and they’ve discussed to get those things in the game will take years to come, if ever. Once that’s done, this game will experience a severe downturn in revenue, only able to exist off of current backers who won’t really need to buy any more ships and once they see it’s poorly done and all talk/promises, won’t spend any more.

“Sometimes when I try to understand a person’s motives, I play a little game. I assume the worst. What’s the worst reason they could possibly have for saying what they say and doing what they do? Then I ask myself, ‘How well does that reason explain what they say and what they do?’. So, tell me- what’s the worst thing they could want?”

Well, I got my refund end of last week. I pledged 4.5 years ago and was tired of the nonsense and waiting for a game that will never resemble what I’d hoped for. Yes, you can pull refunds out of them. There’s a whole subreddit devoted to how you do this.

Quuote Valen Sinclair: “was tired of the nonsense ”

Thanks for your feedback. Is this so called refund on top of the fake 45K one’s? The refund cascade story has flopped as all others scam, vaporware, con, loan, resort purchased with backers money.. not even talking about the 2000 whales pledging fo 80K$ each or mafia laundry cash machine… :)
They are more new Backers every single day, not less and facts like CIG allowing even none backers test the game for free several times per year say a lot about transparency.
Keep going man :)

Which will it be this time? Delays or new items on sale?

Yep cause 2D/3D/concept artists are exactly the same thing as software engineers and gameplay designers… pfsh.

Reader
Geo Kavu

So you actually think that pushing out one concept ship after another is the work of a couple of 3D artists locked in an office, completely isolated from everyone else, who know how to do one thing and one thing only. How to make cool drawings of spaceships.
Really?
The entire team has to see each and every one of those. Because they are the ones to implement them in the future.

Right after an article on lootboxes and how they exploit psycology. More ads for jpeg sales for anonexistent game that already leeched 160 million dollars from common people. I would understand if you were just telling news, but you’re actually suggesting to the readers to spend their money on that crap. Disappointing, MOP.

Chillax brah. MOP is covering the ins and outs of SC just like they all ways have. News, updates, controversies and criticisms are all included. But unlike other sites, they stay above the fray to avoid the emotional, guard rail to guard rail, quagmire.

You should probably check the new Q&A (and maybe yourself) before whipping out a credit card, however, as the X1 will not actually make it into alpha 3.0; it’s set for a more distant date.

…and they wonder why folks are get uppity at purchasing items for a game that is far from being completed. The prices would be scandalous if this was a working released game, let alone one where its beta seems to be a distance concept in some future. Just saying. /sigh

What is WoW’s most expensive mount?

Reader
Utakata

$25 USD usually for your standard sparkle pony, the last I heard (I don’t buy them, so I don’t know the exact price currently). To which I find a tad overpriced for a mainly subscription only MMO, IMO….MOUSE.

…however, all addons are for free. Just be careful where you download them from. :)

On one hand I agree–the fatigue is there for those who have already backed or been watching this project for many years.

On the other hand, I do realize that there’s always going to be someone new coming along looking at this for the first time and having not spent a dime on it.. and they look through the pledge store and see what they could get for their dollars and see nothing they like. I have no doubt some of these X1 purchases will be because someone that hasn’t spent anything on them yet finally saw something they liked.

I can’t really fault CIG for capturing those dollars if people are willing to spend them.

If there is nothing in the whale store that interests you when you are looking for something to spend money on to support the game’s development, you might be backing the wrong game. This isn’t even the first speeder bike type item. If that idea interested you then it would have gotten you with one of the previous two concepts.

I don’t fault them for making loads of money while running a business, but it doesn’t make them look good when they do it this way.

Reader

Not sure you fully read my comment.. I said “someone new coming along” rather than any existing backer that is looking to spend more money (ie, a whale), hence my point that they continue to make stuff for pledge rewards so that maybe a new shiny WILL be something that interests a prospective backer that’s still sitting on the fence.

agemyth 😩

I read your comment fully. I just don’t feel like new and shiny works here when the differences between bikes 1, 2, and 3 aren’t clear to a potential new customer and are even still subject to change as they actually create the vehicles and balance and bug fix them over the months and/or years to come before they make it into the public version of the game.

It generates buzz whether positive or negative, so yeah it probably gets enough newcomers for whatever reason.
