Yes, you can still use artifact appearances in future World of Warcraft expansions

The bankers in Stormwind have seen some stuff, man. You can just see them chilling on their lunch breaks talking about how the Ashbringer used to be whispered in legends, but now banks are just clogged with Ashbringers. That’s the way the World of Warcraft turns, though, and the good news is that you won’t have to stop looking like you’re swinging around Ashbringer or any other artifact weapon once the next expansion rolls around. Yes, you can transmog that slightly better green weapon to look like a mythical artifact, why not?

Of course, the flip side is whether or not you can even obtain the appearance, and the answer to that is also an affirmative… with two caveats. If you’re hoping to obtain the Mythic keystone appearance or the Mage Tower appearances, unlock those before the next expansion comes out; those will be going away once you can make the challenge trivial. If you’re hoping to just have the normal artifact appearance, though? Don’t fret, it’ll still be there with the next expansion, and on through the next one beyond that.

It just seems to me that Blizz tried to copy LOTRO’s legendary system and missed by a mile. Stepping into the wayback machine, you’ll remember that legendary weapons in LOTRO had to be replaced every 5-10 levels and then worked on like crazy to get the news ones working as well as the old ones. They finally got made permanent with Dol Amroth and now level with you. You do have to grind stuff to make them continue to grow, but it isn’t a never ending DPS chase like in WoW. Moreover, traits on LOTRO’s legendary weapons can be changed from their defaults. You can craft the exact weapon you want to compliment your skills and playstyle. If you’re really ambitious, you can do one for each of your builds.

Blizzard seemed to want to take the grindy part of LOTRO’s system and chop off everything else.

There’s really no reason for them to throw out artifact weapons. They aren’t going to do anything better. The problem is they are now so far out there with numbers, how in the world do they make a green drop with the power and class-wide impact that artifact weapons have?

Worst case scenario: They create a system like Diablo’s Paragon, where they give your character “credit” for the DPS in your artifact. Crap, this sounds way too plausible.

Dig that hole a little deeper, Blizz.

As a new player it’s kind of a bummer to know that content will be obsolete before I even get to it, but I guess that’s the price to pay for being 13 years late to the party. Hopefully Legion will be on sale by the time I need it.

I’m right there with you. But you and I being so late – I’m telling myself there is literally no way on earth we’ll ever catch up – so just have fun during the ride.

That’s right, I forgot you just started playing too. Hooray for us! Yeah, I’ve been going through the same mental process and now that I’m comfortable with the game I’m taking it very slow and easy. I’m just glad Blizzard isn’t going under anytime soon.

Honestly, I can’t wait for artifacts weapons to go away. I will not be using them for transmog skins anytime soon.

Another system added and scrapped in just one expansion. I think their cycle of adding and removing functionality of systems in each expansion is a good indicator that the systems they keep trying to add just aren’t up to snuff with the classic ones.

At least you’ll get to keep your artifact appearance as a reminder of another system people didn’t like. Kind of like when you stumble into your garrison or the tillers.

At least they are trying stuff I guess, and when you are replaying through the older content maybe it will give some of it a bit of character and change, although most of its a grind people will just skip I suppose

As I’ve said for years, my problem with WOW is that instead of building upon the mechanics they design and release they instead toss it out and try to reinvent the wheel. It gets damn old and makes for game play and goals that mean nothing.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I’m ok with each expansion having its own signature elements. Doing artifact weapons forever would get boring.

I agree it would get boring to continue to do, but more so because the system itself is boring and grindy.

Man, depending on how they handle artifacts post-Legion, Legion is going to be a pretty strange time for new players who gear up through it. If they weapons go away, they briefly get these dope as hell artifact weapons that they barely get to level up before likely dropping them for leveling greens/blues in the next expansion.

Yeah I was wondering about this too. Maybe you have Artifact Knowledge automatically start at 10 upon hitting 101? Then 20 for 102, and so forth?

Reader

Pretty much, they will end up getting the boost to Artifact knowledge 41 at 110 (where one small AP item will give big returns) and replacing it at 111.

My main still sports bc and tier 3 transmogs. My dk will always sport the ICC armor transmog.

My hunter still uses Gronnstalker – it’s the only set that looks even remotely good on a dwarf! Wish I could have gotten T3, however Naxx opened just after our server did (Sentinels) – so never really got the chance :/

I usually go with T5, but yeah I love the old school looks.
