Lord of the Rings Online drops update 21, immediately rolls back upgrades

Update 21 has arrived for Lord of the Rings Online, which means the two new dungeons that have been getting tested for the past few weeks are now firmly in the hands of players. You can feel free to take a look through the full patch notes for all of the changes, and get in there to start hacking through the dungeons! Everything else is fine.

Well, for a given definition of “fine.” Sure, the patch accidentally launched with gear priced far too low, and so the developers are stripping players of the gear they may have already purchased while offering no replacements for gear that may have been sold or broken down. And sure, those same items are now priced four times higher than they were before. That’s still fine, right?

No, that’s probably not fine. There are also players raising concern that the game’s new Light mechanics have turned into what amounts to a rehash of the much-hated Radiance mechanic from older content with plenty of new grind to support it, but… uh. On the bright side, new dungeons?

Update: SSG has altered the deal – we’ve updated in a fresh post, but the short version is now you’re getting some compensation!

It looks like SSG listened and came up with a solution. Here is the latest news.

A solution that requires players to visit the store in order to remove the essences. No surprise that they found a way to turn their mistake into a money maker.

Reader
GumpsGang

I’m not sure why a person would remove their essences again if they already slotted the new. But just in-case … LOTRO Community Tip: Get your essence removal scrolls form barter vendors (including festival) or the auction house (they usually don’t cost much).

I defend this game pretty tenaciously but yeah, you can’t walk people back from items or rewards they have gained – even if it was a bug. I’m sure there are reasonable exceptions to that idea, but they’d better be reasonable.

Uh-oh, now we REALLY know they screwed up! ; )

For those affected who did destroy their old gear, just taking away the new gear without giving the old gear back is the kind of response that will make people leave the game.

I don’t understand all the consternation. Wasn’t it apparent 12+ or so months ago that SSG on it’s best day was Turbine on it’s worst? You know you’re being fed crap, yet you complain about the taste. Odd.

This is not the game nor the company it was 2-3 years ago and it shows in each and every aspect.

More info should be coming soon. SSG has not followed up with communicating the final plan and hotfix. We’ll see. FYI — the new light system is not bad.

Boy, I enjoy LoTRO for periods of time, drift away, drift back. But it’s a very nice, classic-feeling MMO.

Watching the – well frankly, shitshow – of ongoing decisions coming out of the devs makes me wonder what’s going to be left to come back to. I’m somewhere-in-Rohan levelwise, finding the overwhelming dependence on mount-based quests have made it rather dull, and hoping however soon it can end, it will and I’ll go back to fighting the way I built my character to fight.

(OK, honestly, I’d like to go back to Moria again. But that’s not happening, I know. That place was a sort of once-in-a-game magnificence.)

Nothing is stopping you from enjoying Moria again. You can even do it as a high elf this time ;)

It’s not this wild in-game. There are a lot of exaggerated claims and hyper-focus on negative sounding aspects. LOTRO still have a very strong community.

It’s like watching the TV news, mostly negative stuff get reported because that what draws eyeballs.

Since my server died and I had to migrate to a new one, the new one absolutely sucks for community. World Chat is most of the time full of baiting politics, racist and sexist comments and your general trolling. I no longer feel a part of a community and end up turning off World Chat most of the time.

I never thought that Lotro would end up like this and back in June of 2007 when I joined had you asked me I’d have laughed and said no way chat would ever look like WoW’s Barren chat, Age of Conan’s all the time chat and the crap I saw in ArcheAge chat. How silly and naive I was.

Ouch, that seems like a double whammy. Only heard of the nightmares from radiance and it sounded like they weren’t doing the exact same thing with light but…I guess not.

SSG very much seems to be Turbine with a new name. I was really hoping that, even with DBG handling publishing, they could turn a bit of a new leaf and really kick ass again…but between the Mordor pricing, this, and some other stuff I’ve seen recently that doesn’t seem like it’s ever going to be the case : /

Honestly I’m starting to think of them as worse than Turbine after the Warner Brothers buy out. They “feel” like they are deeply in bed with Daybreak Games these days, that’s my gut feeling mind you and I could be wrong. I hope I’m wrong…

welp….this one will be shut down soon along with all the other Webreak titles

I am curious how they want to deal with that mess. GM Cordovan besides his completely unnecessary sarcastic responses to players said that the team is at least discussing how to deal with it. I have heard from one complete kin who broke down their gear to ash, bought the accidently new cheap ash gear and if they will really strip the gear from them, they will be basically naked after the hotfix.

I’ve not really had any interaction with GM Cordovan but it does seem like every time I read a post of his he’s waxing caustic. Not a good skill set for a customer service sort that a community manager should be.

My impression is that SSG in general seems to get rather thin skinned in recent time over the pay to win complaints of the players. I have also heard that players got banned from the forums etc. so they do not seem to be interested in some sort of conversation or interaction with the community anymore. Overall a really bad development route they chose to go unfortunately.

Wasn’t “Update 21” the Mordor expansion and this is just another patch (aka 21.2) ?

(Oh and they need to hurry and release Update 22 so I don’t have to pay ungodly amounts of money for the High Elf captain I would like to play)

Man, LOTRO has become the text book in how not to publish a game.

Really? You can’t think of a worse example? Maybe something by Trion perhaps? Maybe one of the many sunsetted MMOs that were so poorly published they couldn’t survive? NCSoft has a great reputation as a publisher, right? Aren’t all of their games still up and running?

OTOH… LotRO had a great launch and has been running well for over a decade now, with little more than its expected share of hiccups along the way. At one point, it even challenged WoW a little bit (thanks to it being one of the better WoW-clones and having a great IP). There was even a time when (it appeared) Blizzard waited until LotRO announed the release of an expansion, and then Blizzard followed that up a day later that their expansion would release a few days before LotRO’s.

The biggest hiccup along the way was the F2P conversion, which wasn’t great, and it drove a good share of people away, but it’s also likely the reason the game is still running today. I’d follow that up with the Mordor pricing being the next biggest, and I can only hope that SSG learns from that.

just tossing this out there. Seems like 99% of game drama is either “endgame” or “PvP” related. In every game, not just LOTRO. Somehow these controversies never seen to affect me. #ItsTheJourneyNotTheDestination

Same here, though I do empathize with those who might get screwed over due to an error on SSG’s part. I’ve got two characters in the area, one 115th and the other 114th now and I’ve only gotten the purple Ash gear at this time from the vender.

I will point out though that I never pay close attention to the cost, just that I have enough to buy the damn item and will buy items until I don’t have enough. So I’d not have noted if they were priced too low or not if I had even bought some. lol

Yeah, I hear you. Like you, I often make multiple posts in the comments section of an article which has a subject that doesn’t affect me. Likewise, I try to imply that people are playing the game wrong and/or shouldn’t take things so seriously. We should hang out some time. I like you.

A quote from fredelas thats a name I havent seen in a long time. An infamous one at that and not of his own creation I might add. LOTRO for me and I think its safe to say for many others was always a good game that was held back from being great due to the company who was developing it.

Clearly, that assessment hasnt changed.

Glad I’m not at the point where it affected me. Just finished all of the Udun quests a couple days ago. Current Light rating is 72.

Going to continue my casual stroll into Mordor for awhile yet. :)

SSG is just waiting until they can offer them a key or two as compensation for a brand new series of loot-creates they’re working on. Tolkien Tins!

They’re proving that they’re a good mate to Daybreak Games. After all last fall I did have to agree to a Daybreak Games TOS when logging into Lotro. I shuddered and paused at the time but still clicked “agree” just so I could log in, I felt dirty afterwards and took a long hot shower.

…and they didn’t think this would actually piss off players? o.O

worse, was the completely tone-deaf sarcastic response from the CM, this game has lost the plot (officially)…/shrug.
